Weekly Wash #46: Wasatch Hanging Towel

I’ve made several hanging towels and my favorite ones are the simple ones that flip over a bar or around a handle and don’t need any extra hardware like buttons. I hope you will enjoy creating this simple texture and want to create a matching set.

Materials & Details

  • Yarn: 350 yards ww cotton for main color, 60 yards ww cotton in contrasting color
  • Crochet Hook: I (5.5mm)
  • Notions: Yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • Size: 25″ long x 11″ wide

Tips

  • Numbers at the beginning of each line may refer to steps and not indicate number of rows.
  • Stitch count remains the same unless noted at end of row.

Directions

1. With an I hook, ch 37, sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (36sts) Stitch count will remain the same for the entire cloth.

2. Ch 1, turn, hdc in the same st, *sk 1, (sc, dc in the next st)*, repeat until 1 at remains, hdc in the last st.

From this point on, the sts are worked between the clusters of the previous row instead of in the stitch.
3. Ch 1, turn, hdc between the first two posts, *sk 1, (sc, dc) between the next 2 clusters*,  repeat until 1 st remains, hdc between the last 2 posts. (36sts)

4. Repeat the previous step for an additional 7 rows.

5. Finish off the current yarn. Change to a contrasting color (burgundy in sample). Ch 1, turn, hdc between the first two posts, *sk 1, (sc, dc) between the next 2 clusters*,  repeat until 1 st remains, hdc between the last 2 posts. (36sts)

6-7. Ch 1, turn, hdc between the first two posts, *sk 1, (sc, dc) between the next 2 clusters*,  repeat until 1 st remains, hdc between the last 2 posts. (36sts)

8. Finish off the current yarn. Change back to the original yarn. Ch 1, turn, hdc between the first two posts, *sk 1, (sc, dc) between the next 2 clusters*,  repeat until 1 st remains, hdc between the last 2 posts. (36sts)

9. Ch 1, turn, hdc between the first two posts, *sk 1, (sc, dc) between the next 2 clusters*, repeat until 1 st remains, hdc between the last 2 posts. (36sts)

10. Repeat the previous step for an additional 23 rows.

11. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st and in each st to end of row.

12. This step creates the slit in the middle. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st, sc 11, ch 12, sk 12, sc 12.

13. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st, sc 11, sc 12 in the ch, sc 12.

14. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st and in each st to end of row.

15. Ch 1, turn, hdc between the first two posts, *sk 1, (sc, dc) between the next 2 clusters*, repeat until 1 st remains, hdc between the last 2 posts. (36sts)

16. Repeat the previous step for an additional 23 rows.

17. Finish off the current yarn. Change to a contrasting color (burgundy in sample). Ch 1, turn, hdc between the first two posts, *sk 1, (sc, dc) between the next 2 clusters*,  repeat until 1 st remains, hdc between the last 2 posts. (36sts)

18-19. Ch 1, turn, hdc between the first two posts, *sk 1, (sc, dc) between the next 2 clusters*,  repeat until 1 st remains, hdc between the last 2 posts. (36sts)

20. Finish off the current yarn. Change back to the original yarn. Ch 1, turn, hdc between the first two posts, *sk 1, (sc, dc) between the next 2 clusters*,  repeat until 1 st remains, hdc between the last 2 posts. (36sts)

21. Ch 1, turn, hdc between the first two posts, *sk 1, (sc, dc) between the next 2 clusters*,  repeat until 1 st remains, hdc between the last 2 posts. (36sts)

22. Repeat the previous step for an additional 7 rows.

23. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st and in each st to end of row. Finish off and weave in ends.
