Free Pattern: Fred Washcloths

For years I have been making square cloths my mom used to make a lot. They are worked from one corner to the next in BLO. They are quick, easy, and can be made any size. My “Nancy Cloths” and “minis” have been really popular so I decided to make another version.

I made this to match my weekly wash patterns from January 2020. I hope you will enjoy these patterns too. The patterns are free to follow along on my blog, plus several of them have a paid pdf for a small fee:

Fred Washcloth Crochet Pattern

Materials and Details

  • Yarn: Worsted weight Cotton 50-75 yds
  • Crochet Hook: I (5.5mm)
  • Miscellaneous: Yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • Finished Measurements: Small – 6.5” long x 5”wide: Large – 9” long x 6.75” wide
  • Gauge: Not necessary for this project

Reminders

  • Increases and regular sts:
    2hdc in the next st = an increase. Work 2 hdc in the next st
    hdc 2 = work one hdc in each of the next 2 sts. St count does not increase.

Tips

  • The first stitch of each row is worked into the same stitch as the turning chain unless noted.
  • Numbers at the beginning of each line may refer to steps and not indicate the number of rows.
  • Stitch count remains the same unless noted at the end of row/round.

Directions

This is a quick and easy cloth that can be made any length/width as desired. Follow the instructions as written to create cloths similar in size to the samples, or adjust the amount of repeats for more or less sts. 

Large Diamond Cloth

This starts at one narrow point.

1. With an I hook and worsted weight cotton yarn, ch 2, 3sc in the 2nd ch from hook. (3sts)

From this point on work all sts in BLO.

2. Ch 1, turn, (sc, dc) in the same st, sc, (dc, sc) in the last st. (5sts)

3. Ch 1, turn, (sc, dc) in the same st, sc, dc, sc, (dc, sc) in the last st. (7sts)

4. Ch 1, turn, (sc, dc) in the same st, sc, dc, sc, dc, sc, (dc, sc) in the last st. (9sts)

5. Ch 1, turn, (sc, dc) in the same st, *sc, dc*, repeat until 1 st remains, (dc, sc) in the last st. (11sts)

6. Repeat the previous step four more times, until there are 23 sts. 

7. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, *dc, sc*, repeat until 3 sts remain, dc, sc2tog. (21sts)

8. Repeat the previous step until 3 sts remain.

9. Ch 1, turn, sc3tog. Finish off and weave in ends. 

Shaping: hold on to the points of one side and slightly tug to straighten the edge. Repeat for all four sides. 


Small Diamond Cloth

This starts at one narrow point.

1. With an I hook and worsted weight cotton yarn, ch 2, 3sc in the 2nd ch from hook. (3sts)

From this point on work all sts in BLO.

2. Ch 1, turn, (sc, dc) in the same st, sc, (dc, sc) in the last st. (5sts)

3. Ch 1, turn, (sc, dc) in the same st, sc, dc, sc, (dc, sc) in the last st. (7sts)

4. Ch 1, turn, (sc, dc) in the same st, sc, dc, sc, dc, sc, (dc, sc) in the last st. (9sts)

5. Ch 1, turn, (sc, dc) in the same st, *sc, dc*, repeat until 1 st remains, (dc, sc) in the last st. (11sts)

6. Repeat the previous step four more times, until there are 19 sts. 

7. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, *dc, sc*, repeat until 3 sts remain, dc, sc2tog. (17sts)

8. Repeat the previous step until 3 sts remain.

9. Ch 1, turn, sc3tog. Finish off and weave in ends. 

Shaping: hold on to the points of one side and slightly tug to straighten the edge. Repeat for all four sides.
