Coaster/Washcloth

1. With an I hook and cotton yarn, ch 11, sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (10sts)

From this point on, work all sts in the BLO.

2. Ch 4, turn, tr in the same st, dc, hdc, sc 7.

3. Ch 1, turn, sc in each st to the end of the row.

4. Repeat steps 2-3 seventeen more times. There should be 18 “bumps”.

5. Pivot the piece to work across the long, bottom edge. Ch 1, *sc2tog*, repeat 17 more times. (18sts)

Tip: work the sc2tog by inserting the hook before the ridge and pull up a loop, insert the hook after the ridge and pull up a loop, YO and pull through all loops on the hook.

Finish off, leaving a long tail for finishing the piece.

Assembly:

Use a yarn needle to weave the yarn tail in and out of the sts of the bottom edge. Carefully pull the yarn to cinch in the bottom edge and close the circle as much as possible. Secure the yarn to hold this in place. If there is a small hole in the middle, use the yarn needle and yarn tail to sew the middle closed.

Fold the piece with right sides together and match the two edges of the piece. Use the yarn needle and yarn tail to sew the edges together. Make sure to end the row so it even with the other dips between the bumps.

Trivet

5. Pivot the piece to work across the long, bottom edge. Ch 1, *sc2tog*, repeat 9 more times. (10sts)

Tip: work the sc2tog by inserting the hook before the ridge and pull up a loop, insert the hook after the ridge and pull up a loop, YO and pull through all loops on the hook.

6. Ch 1, turn, *sc2tog*, repeat 4 more times. (5sts).

7. Pivot the piece to work across the edge of the last petal. Loosely sl st 10. Finish off and weave in ends. Set aside.

Assembly

After all four petal pieces have been made, it is time to sew them together at the center only. If you have used different colors, decide the color pattern you would like to create.

Make sure the right side is facing up on each petal piece. The tips of the petals on the “right side” will curve up slightly.

Cut a piece of yarn 18” long. This yarn will be covered so any of the colors will work.

Place two of the petal pieces together, overlapping 4 bumps where the two meet (photo below left). Starting in the third st on the 1st petal piece (blue) and the first st of the 2nd petal piece (orange), sew 3 sts of the layers together. Do not finish off the yarn.

Place another petal piece (green) under the left edge of the 2nd petal piece (orange). Starting in the next st on the 2nd petal piece and the first st of the 3rd petal piece, sew 3 sts together.

Place another petal piece (pink) under the left edge of the 3rd petal piece (green). Starting in the next st on the 3rd petal piece and the first st of the 4th petal piece, sew 3 sts together.

Place the unsewn edge of the 1st petal piece (blue) under the 4th petal piece (pink). Starting in the next st on the 4th petal piece and the first st of the 1st petal piece, sew 3 sts together. Finish off and weave in ends.

Center (make 2)

1. With an I hook and cotton yarn (yellow), start with a magic circle of 5 sc sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 5 sc sts), pull together and sl st to join. (5sts)

2. Ch 1, 2sc in each st to end of round, sl st to join. (10sts)

3. Ch 1, *sc, 2sc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (15sts)

4. Ch 1, *sc 2, 2sc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (20sts) Finish off, leaving a long yarn tail on one of the center pieces.

Place a center piece on both sides of the middle circle and pin in place if desired. With a yarn needle and the yarn tail from one of the center pieces, sew the very middle of the centers of the circles together. See photos below.

Working out towards the edge of the center pieces, keep sewing the layers together and picking up the petal pieces as you go.
