Free Pattern: Linked Heart to Heart Scarf and Cowl

I love making scarves of all kinds, but especially infinity and mobius scarves (infinity = joined, continuous circle; mobius = has a twist in it so it lays neatly when doubled).

This pattern, “Linked Heart to Heart” scarf and cowl, can be created many different ways, from a variety of yarns. The pattern includes a shrug (wider on one edge to slide down over the shoulders), a cowl/infinity scarf in any length and a mobius, I think the clusters look like little hearts with chains linking them together.

Mobius Scarf

An Infinity Scarf with a TWIST

Measurement: 60” x desired width

There are two ways to begin this scarf. Choose either the fsc or regular chain option below:

FSC (foundation single crochet) Option:

With worsted weight yarn and J hook, create a FSC (foundation single crochet chain) of 198 sts. (198sts)

Lay the chain on a flat surface and make sure it is NOT twisted at this point. Line up the ends as if to join into a circle. Skip to #1 below.

Regular Chain Option:

With worsted weight yarn and J hook, chain 199, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each chain across. (198sts)

Lay the chain on a flat surface and make sure it is NOT twisted at this point. Line up the ends as if to join into a circle. Continue to #1 below.

1. Your chain should be laid out similar to the photo below.

Flip the beginning end over once to work into the bottom of the chain. This creates the twist in the scarf. Sl st to join. There will be a gap between the bottom edges of the chain. This will be closed later.

2. Ch 2, 3dc in same ch, ch 3, sk 5, *4dc next ch, ch 3, sk 5,* repeat to end of round. The “rounds” are actually a figure 8. As you work around and meet up with the first cluster, you should now be on the opposite side of the chain.

At this point, set your hook down. We are going to sew closed that little gap where the chains meet (see arrow in photo below). With yarn tail and yarn needle, sew the two edges together. Weave in end.

Work 4dc in the space at the bottom of the first cluster of this round. Continue working 4dc in the space at the bottom of each cluster.

At the end of step 2 your scarf should look like the one in the photo below.

Sl st in top of beginning chain from start of round. The beginning chain should be in the middle of your scarf (pink in photo above).

3. Sl st in next dc, sl st in space between 2nd and 3rd posts from first cluster of previous round.

Ch 2, 3dc in same space, *ch 3, 4dc in middle of cluster (between posts of 2nd and 3rd dc of the next cluster),* repeat to end of round, sl st in top of beginning ch to join.

Repeat round 3 until scarf is desired width. Finish off and weave in ends.

Samples

As always, my testers made beautiful scarves from this pattern. I love them and how they have been displayed. I hope you do too.
