Directions for Pampering Penguin
Materials
- Yarn: 200 yards cotton or acrylic yarn (depending on whether it will be used for cleaning (cotton) or a decoration (either).
Sample yarns: Black, White, Orange - Crochet Hooks: H (5mm), I (5.5mm)
- Notions: Yarn needle for weaving in ends, scissors, sewing needle, thread, 2 small black buttons
Measurements
- Finished Measurement: 5” tall x 4” across
- Gauge: not needed for this project.
Tips – please take a second to read this section
- The first stitch of each row is worked into the same stitch as the turning chain unless noted.
- Numbers at the beginning of each line may refer to steps and not indicate number of rows.
- Stitch count remains the same unless noted at end of row/round.

- Reminder: sc 3 = sc one st in each of the next 3 sts; 3sc in next st = work 3sc sts in the next (one) st
Directions
- This project is created by making several circles in different sizes and then stacking them onto a center chain with a loop on top.
- Instructions are written for the colors of the sample. Feel free to substitute colors as desired.

G: Hanger – Make 1 – Black
With an I hook and worsted weight cotton yarn (Sample: Black), ch 50, sl st in the 30th ch (to form the hanger loop) and in each ch to end. Finish off and weave in ends. Set aside.
A: Make 1 – Orange
1. Leave at least an 8” yarn tail in the beginning. With an I hook and worsted weight cotton yarn (Sample: Orange), ch 5, sl st in the last ch to create a circle.
2. Ch 1, 12 hdc in the circle (around the chain and beginning yarn tail), sl st in the first st to join. (12sts)
Note: By crocheting over the beginning yarn tail, it will allow us to close the center circle a little when this piece is complete.
3. Ch 2 (counts as the first st), hdc in the same st, 2hdc in each st to end of round, sl st in the top of the beginning chain to join. (24sts)
4. Ch 2 (counts as the first st), dc in the same st, *2dc in each of the next 9 sts, (2dc, ch 2, sl st) in the next st*, sl st 2, ch 2, dc in the same st, repeat the section between **. Sl st in the last st. Finish off and weave in the end.
With a yarn needle, use the beginning yarn tail to weave around the beginning circle. Pull a little to cinch in the center circle if needed. It should be just big enough for the center chain to pass through. Weave in the yarn tail.
B: Make 2 – Black
1. Leave at least an 8” yarn tail in the beginning. With an I hook and worsted weight cotton yarn (Sample: Black), ch 5, sl st in the last ch to create a circle.
2. Ch 1, 12 hdc in the circle (around the chain and beginning yarn tail), sl st in the first st to join. (12sts)
Note: By crocheting over the beginning yarn tail, it will allow us to close the center circle a little when this piece is complete.
3. Ch 2 (counts as the first st), hdc in the same st, 2hdc in each st to end of round, sl st in the top of the beginning chain to join. (24sts)
4. Ch 2 (counts as the first st), hdc in the same st, 3hdc in the next st, *2hdc in the next st, 3hdc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st in the top of the beginning chain to join. (60sts)
With a yarn needle, use the beginning yarn tail to weave around the beginning circle. Pull a little to cinch in the center circle if needed. It should be just big enough for the center chain to pass through. Weave in the yarn tail.
C: Make 2 White and 1 Black
1. Leave at least an 8” yarn tail in the beginning. With an I hook and worsted weight cotton yarn (Sample: White/Black), ch 5, sl st in the last ch to create a circle.
2. Ch 1, 12 hdc in the circle (around the chain and beginning yarn tail), sl st in the first st to join. (12sts)
Note: By crocheting over the beginning yarn tail, it will allow us to close the center circle a little when this piece is complete.
3. Ch 2 (counts as the first st), 2hdc in the same st, 3hdc in each st to end of round, sl st in the top of the beginning chain to join. (36sts)
4. Ch 2 (counts as the first st), dc in the same st, 2dc in each st to end of round, sl st in the top of the beginning chain to join. (72sts)
With a yarn needle, use the beginning yarn tail to weave around the beginning circle. Pull a little to cinch in the center circle if needed. It should be just big enough for the center chain to pass through. Weave in the yarn tail.
D: Make 1 White
1. Leave at least an 8” yarn tail in the beginning. With an I hook and worsted weight cotton yarn (Sample: White), ch 5, sl st in the last ch to create a circle.
2. Ch 1, 12 hdc in the circle (around the chain and beginning yarn tail), sl st in the first st to join. (12sts)
Note: By crocheting over the beginning yarn tail, it will allow us to close the center circle a little when this piece is complete.
3. Ch 2 (counts as the first st), 2hdc in the same st, 3hdc in each st to end of round, sl st in the top of the beginning chain to join. (36sts)
4. Ch 2 (counts as the first st), dc in the same st, 3dc in the next st, *2dc in the next st, 3dc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st in the top of the beginning chain to join. (90sts)
With a yarn needle, use the beginning yarn tail to weave around the beginning circle. Pull a little to cinch in the center circle if needed. It should be just big enough for the center chain to pass through. Weave in the yarn tail.
E: Wings – Make 1 Black
1. Leave at least an 8” yarn tail in the beginning. With an I hook and worsted weight cotton yarn (Sample: Black), ch 5, sl st in the last ch to create a circle.
2. Ch 1, 10 hdc in the circle (around the chain and beginning yarn tail), sl st in the first st to join. (10sts)
3. Ch 1, 2hdc in each st to end of round, sl st to join. (20sts)
4. Ch 1, hdc in the same st and in the next 7 sts. (8sts)
5. Ch 1, turn, hdc in the same st, hdc 7.
6. Ch 1, turn, hdc2tog, hdc in each st to end. (7sts)
7. Repeat the previous step 2 more times. (5 sts)
8. Ch 1, turn, hdc2tog, hdc, hdc2tog. (3sts)
9. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, ch 1, sl st. Finish off and weave in end.
10. Skip 2 sts on the circle. Attach matching yarn and repeat steps 4-9.
With a yarn needle, use the beginning yarn tail to weave around the beginning circle. Pull a little to cinch in the center circle if needed. It should be just big enough for the center chain to pass through. Weave in the yarn tail .
H: Head – Make 1 Black
1. Leave at least an 8” yarn tail in the beginning. With an I hook and worsted weight cotton yarn (Sample: Black), ch 5, sl st in the last ch to create a circle.
2. Ch 1, 10 hdc in the circle (around the chain and beginning yarn tail), sl st in the first st to join. (10sts)
3. Ch 1, *hdc, 2hdc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (15sts)
4. Ch 1, *hdc 4, 2hdc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (18sts)
5. Ch 1, *hdc 5, 2hdc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (21sts)
6. Ch 1, *hdc 6, 2hdc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (24sts)
7. Ch 1, *sc2tog, sc*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (16sts) Finish off and weave in end.
With a yarn needle, use the beginning yarn tail to weave around the beginning circle. Pull a little to cinch in the center circle if needed. It should be just big enough for the center chain to pass through. Weave in the yarn tail.
Eyes: Make 2 White
With an H hook and worsted weight white yarn, create a magic circle of 8 sc sts (or preferred method of creating a circle of 8 sc sts), pull to close and sl st to join. (8sts) Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing to the head.
Use a yarn needle and each yarn tail to sew the eyes to the head (see main photo), slightly overlapping in the middle.
With a sewing needle and black thread, sew a small black button on top of each eye piece.
Beak
1. Leave a yarn tail in the beginning to sew the beak in place. With an H hook and worsted weight orange yarn, ch 5, starting with the 2nd ch from hook, sc2tog, sc2tog. (2sts)
2. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog. (1 st)
3. Ch 1, turn, sl st. Finish off and weave in end.
With a yarn needle, use the beginning yarn tail to sew the beginning edge of the beak to the pouch, overlapping the bottom edge of the eyes.
Assembly
Pull the straight end of the hanger through the top of the head.
Pull the end through each piece in the following order:
– smaller black circle
– wing piece
– larger black circle
– smaller white circle
– larger white circle
– smaller white circle
– smaller black circle
– right side of the foot piece.
With a yarn needle and matching yarn, sew the end of the hanger to the foot piece.
Squish the layers together as much as desired. Tie a loose knot in the hanger next to the top of the head to keep the layers together.
