Free Pattern: 17” and 19” Football Goose Outfits
Football Fan Goose
Football season is here, which means the porch geese obviously need game-day outfits too. 🏈🪿
The Football Fan Goose turns your goose into one very enthusiastic football fan with a football-shaped sweater, stitched laces and a cozy little earflap beanie.
We’re Broncos fans around here, so orange and blue tend to make their way into our football projects. 🧡💙 But this one is made for showing off your team colors, so raid that yarn stash and get your goose ready for kickoff!
This pattern was originally designed for the 17″ porch goose. Since then, another goose has waddled into the Snappy Tots flock: Wally, our 19″ goose!
The good news is that the 17″ and 19″ geese are close enough in size that this outfit works for both. So whether you’re dressing a Dot-size 17″ goose or a Wally-size 19″ goose, you’re ready for game day.

Football Fan Goose Crochet Pattern
This pattern includes the football sweater and coordinating earflap beanie for 17″ and 19″ porch geese.
Materials
- Football Sweater: 150 yards worsted weight brown and 30 yards worsted weight cream
- Beanie: Less than 20 yards in 2 colors
- Sample Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver Coffee, Aran, Teal and Heather Gray
- Crochet Hook: G (4.25–4.5mm)
- Supplies: Yarn needle for weaving in ends and 4 stitch markers (yarn scraps work for this too)
- Optional: Measuring tape and scissors
- Gauge: 4″ = 15 sts x 11 rounds
- Finished Sweater: Approximately 13″ long x 14″ across the middle, measured flat
Pattern Tips
- The first stitch of each row is worked into the same stitch as the turning chain unless noted.
- Numbers at the beginning of each line may refer to steps and not indicate the number of rows/rounds.
- Stitch count remains the same unless noted at the end of the row or round.
Football Sweater
This starts at the neck and is worked toward the tail.
- With a G hook and worsted weight yarn (Sample: Coffee), ch 36, sl st in last ch from hook to form circle. Make sure chain is not twisted. (36sts)
- Ch 1, sc same ch and each ch around, sl st first st. (36sts)
- Ch 1, *hdc 8, 2hdc next*, repeat. (40sts)
- Ch 1, *hdc 9, 2hdc next*, repeat. (44sts)
- Ch 1, hdc in each st around.
- Ch 1, *hdc 10, 2hdc next*, repeat. (48sts)
- Ch 1, *hdc 11, 2hdc next*, repeat. (52sts)
- Ch 1, *hdc 12, 2hdc next*, repeat. (56sts)
- Ch 1, *hdc 13, 2hdc next*, repeat. (60sts)
- Change to cream yarn. Ch 1, *hdc 14, 2hdc next*, repeat. (64sts)
- Ch 1, *hdc 15, 2hdc next*, repeat. (68sts)
- Ch 1, *hdc 16, 2hdc next*, repeat. (72sts)
- Change back to the main color. Ch 1, hdc in each st around.
- Ch 1, *hdc 35, 2hdc next*, repeat once. (74sts)
- Ch 1, hdc in each st around.
- Ch 1, *hdc 36, 2hdc next*, repeat once. (76sts)
- Ch 1, hdc in each st around.
- Repeat the previous round an additional 4 rounds.
- This step starts a triangle, wedge shape. Ch 1, sc2tog, sc 12, sc2tog. (14sts) Leave remaining sts unworked.
- Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc until 2 sts remain, sc2tog. (12sts)
- Repeat the previous row until 4 sts remain.
- Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc2tog. (2sts)
- Ch 1, turn, sc2tog. Finish off.
- Skip 16 sts on the last full round and attach yarn to the 17th st. Repeat steps 19-23, but do not finish off at the end.
- This step is worked down the side of the current triangle, across the wider flat edge (not the skipped 16 sts), and up the second triangle. Ch 1, turn to work from the RS. Hdc in the same st, hdc 6 evenly down the side, hdc2tog at the corner (side + row), hdc 28, hdc2tog at the next corner, hdc 6 evenly up the side, hdc in the tip of the second triangle. Do not continue down the opposite side of the rectangle. (44sts)
Sweater construction around step 25.
- Ch 1, turn, 2sc same, sc 3, hdc 36, sc 3, 2sc. (46sts)
- Ch 1, turn, sc 4, hdc 38, sc 4. (46sts)
- Ch 1, turn, sc 5, hdc 36, sc 5. (46sts)
- Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc 4, hdc 10, hdc2tog, hdc 10, hdc2tog, hdc 10, sc 4, sc2tog. (42sts)
- Change to cream. Ch 1, turn, hdc in each st.
- Ch 1, turn, hdc2tog, hdc until 2 sts remain, hdc2tog. (40sts)
- Ch 1, turn, hdc2tog, hdc until 2 sts remain, hdc2tog. (38sts)
- Change to the main color. Ch 1, turn, hdc in each st.
- Ch 1, turn, hdc 2, *hdc2tog, hdc 4*, repeat. (32sts)
- Ch 1, turn, *hdc2tog, hdc 6*, repeat. (28sts)
- Do not turn. Ch 12, sl st in first st across gap to create a round. Ch 1, hdc in each st, join. (40sts)
- Ch 1, *hdc2tog, hdc 6*, repeat. (35sts)
- Ch 1, *hdc2tog, hdc 5*, repeat. (30sts)
- Ch 1, hdc 21, *hdc2tog, hdc*, repeat. (27sts)
- Ch 1, hdc 21, *hdc2tog*, repeat. (24sts)
- Ch 1, sc2tog, sc 3, hdc 14, sc 3, sc2tog, join. (22sts)
- Ch 1, sc2tog, sc 2, hdc 14, sc 2, sc2tog, join. (20sts) Finish off, leaving a long tail.
Bottom Edge
Divide the bottom edge into 4 sections and place a marker at each section. Attach yarn to the bottom edge next to one of the markers.
Work the following round, switching yarns to match the main color and stripe section.
Ch 1, hdc 72 sts evenly around the bottom opening, sl st in the first st to join. (72sts)
Tip: Hdc 18 sts between each set of markers.
Ch 1, *FPHDC around the next post, BPHDC around the next post*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join.
Repeat the previous round. Finish off and weave in ends.
Football Stitching
Center Strip: With a G hook and cream yarn, ch 12, sc in the 2nd ch from hook and across. Finish off, leaving a long tail.
Use the yarn tail to sew the strip to the middle of the back, centered between the cream bands.
With a yarn needle and cream yarn, add stitches across the strip as shown in the photo.
Goose Beanie
This starts at the top of the beanie.
- With a G hook and worsted weight yarn, start with a magic circle of 6 sc sts, pull closed and sl st to join. (6sts)
- Ch 1, 2sc in each st around, sl st to join. (12sts)
- Ch 1, *sc, 2sc next*, repeat around. (18sts)
- Ch 1, *sc 2, 2sc next*, repeat around. (24sts)
- Ch 1, hdc in each st around.
- Ch 1, *FPHDC around next post, BPHDC around next post*, repeat around.
- This starts the first earflap. Ch 1, sc same st, sc 5. (6sts) Leave remaining sts unworked.
- Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc 2, sc2tog. (4sts)
- Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc2tog. (2sts)
- Ch 1, turn, sc2tog. Finish off.
- Skip 6 sts on the bottom edge. Attach yarn. Ch 1, sc same st, sc 5. (6sts)
- Repeat steps 8-10.
Pompom
Cut a piece of blue yarn 10″ long and set aside. This will be used to tie around the middle of the pompom. Hold one strand of each color (yellow and blue in sample) and wrap around 3 of your fingers 10 times.
Cut the yarn and carefully slide the loops off your fingers. Wrap the 10″ piece around the middle and tie a knot. Trim the pompom until it is the size and shape you like, then use the yarn tails to sew it to the top center of the beanie.
Braids
Cut 2 strands of one color and 4 strands of another color, each 14″ long. Divide the strands into 2 sets.
Pull the ends of one set through the tip of one earflap until the ends are even. Divide into 1 section blue and 2 sections yellow. Braid and tie a knot near the bottom.
Repeat for the second braid.
Game-day goose: READY. 🏈🪿
