Weekly Wash #37: Kitchen Sunflowers Trivet

Matching Patterns

Last year I created a set of sunflowers for our gift event and just kept adding pieces to it because we had a lot of fun making them. Each week this month I will add another piece of the set. Patterns from the set will be listed below:

Kitchen Sunflowers Trivet Crochet Pattern

The pattern for this project is available below, here on the blog.

What is a trivet? Growing up we always had “trivets”, items made from fabric, ceramic, stone, and some crocheted to place on the table or cabinet to set a hot dish upon.

Materials

  • Yarn: 200 yards yellow cotton yarn (1-2shades), 60 yards brown cotton yarn
  • Crochet Hooks: H (5mm)
  • Notions: Yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • Optional: Measuring tape, scissors

Measurements

  • Finished Measurement: 7” across
  • Gauge: not needed for this project.

Tips

  • The first stitch of each row is worked into the same stitch as the turning chain.
  • Stitch count remains the same unless noted at end of row/round.
  • If you have any questions about this pattern please contact [email protected].

Directions

This project starts at the center of the flower. I have included two options for the center in case you would prefer a post stitch, thicker center or one made from regular hdc sts.

Center Option A

1. With an H hook and ww yarn (brown or color of choice), create a circle of 8 sc sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 8 sc sts), pull closed and sl st in first st to join. (8sts)

2. Ch 1, 2sc in each st to end of round, sl st to join. (16sts)

3. Ch 1, *hdc, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (24sts)

4. Ch 1, *FPDC around each of the next 3 posts, 2FPDC around the next post*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (30sts)

5. Ch 1, *FPDC around each of the next 4 posts, 2FPDC around the next post*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (36sts)

6. Ch 1, *FPDC around each of the next 5 posts, 2FPDC around the next post*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (42sts)

7. Work this round in BLO. Ch 1, *hdc 6, 2hdc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (48sts)

8. Work this round in BLO. Ch 1, *hdc 7, 2hdc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (54sts) Finish off and weave in ends.

Center Option B

(24sts)

4. Ch 1, *hdc 3, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (30sts)

5. Ch 1, *hdc 4, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (36sts)

6. Ch 1, *hdc 5, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (42sts)

Petals

The back round of petals is worked first.

With an H hook, attach one strand of yellow yarn (or color of choice) to any st on the last round (outer edge) of the center.

Ch 2, (dc, tr) in same st, ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, (tr, dc, ch 2, sl st) in next st, sl st 2, (one petal complete), *ch 2, (dc, tr) in same st, ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, (tr, dc, ch 2, sl st) in next st, sl st 2*, repeat to end of round. Finish off and weave in end. (18 petals)

Middle Round of Petals

This round is worked into the remaining loops from step 8.

With an H hook, attach one strand of yellow yarn (yellow and white variegated in sample) to any remaining loop. Choose one that is in the middle of a petal from the previous round. This will stagger the petals (see photo at right).

(16 petals)

Front Round of Petals

This round is worked into the remaining loops from step 7.

With an H hook, attach one strand of yellow yarn (yellow and white variegated in sample) to any remaining loop. Choose one that is in the middle of a petal from the previous round. This will stagger the petals (see photo at right).

Ch 1, (hdc, dc) in same st, ch 2, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, (dc, hdc, ch 1, sl st) in next st, sl st 2, (one petal complete), *ch 1, (hdc, dc) in same st, ch 2, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, (dc, hdc, ch 1, sl st) in next st, sl st 2*, repeat to end of round. Finish off and weave in end. (14 petals)
