About Goose Pouch and Jack

I love a project that is useful and a little silly, and this one checks both boxes. The goose is a drawstring pouch with dangling feet and floppy wings, and she is holding her own squishy jack-o’-lantern friend.

Fill the pouch with a few treats, use the back loop to hang it up, or make one just because a goose carrying a pumpkin makes Halloween better.

Materials & Details

• Yarn: 70 yards worsted weight white yarn, 50 yards worsted weight orange, small amounts of green, black, lavender, and yellow
• Miscellaneous: Yarn needle, measuring tape, 2 small black buttons for eyes, sewing needle, black thread, small amount of stuffing
• Crochet Hooks: H (5mm), I (5.5mm)
• Measurements: Goose: 7.5” tall x 4.5” across; Pumpkin: 3.5” x 3”
• Gauge: Not necessary

Good to Know Before You Start

• First stitch of each row is worked into the same stitch as the turning chain unless noted.
• Numbers at the beginning of each line may refer to steps and do not necessarily indicate number of rows.
• Make it a ghost! This could easily be a ghost instead of a goose by leaving off the feet and beak. Use a yarn needle and yarn color of choice to stitch a round nose under the eyes instead.

Main Bag

This project starts at the bottom of the bag.

1. With an I hook and worsted weight yarn (Sample: White), start with a magic loop of 8 sc sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 8 sc sts). Pull closed and sl st to join. (8sts)
2. Ch 1, 2hdc in each st to end of round, sl st to join. (16sts)
3. Ch 1, *hdc, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (24sts)
4. Ch 1, hdc in each st to end of round, sl st to join.
5. Ch 1, *hdc 3, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (30sts)
6. Ch 1, hdc in each st to end of round, sl st to join.
7. Repeat the previous round for an additional 11 rounds.
8. Ch 1, sc in each st to end of round, sl st to join.
9. Repeat the previous round for an additional 5 rounds.
10. Ch 1, hdc in each st to end of round, sl st to join.
11. Sl st between the posts from the previous round. Finish off and weave in ends.

Drawstring: With an H hook and worsted weight yarn (Sample: Lavender), ch 70. Finish off and trim the ends. Weave in and out of the hdc sts. Tie a bow in the front. Pull a loop from the back for a hanger.

Eyes

With a sewing needle and black thread, sew buttons in the middle of the top section, centered under the bow.

Beak

1. Leave a long yarn tail in the beginning for sewing when complete. With an H hook and worsted weight yarn (Sample: Bright Yellow), ch 5, sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each across. (4sts)
2. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc2tog. (2sts)
3. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog. Finish off and weave in end.

Use a yarn needle and the beginning yarn tail to sew the starting edge of the beak centered under the eyes.

Feet and Legs – Make 2

1. With an I hook and worsted weight yarn (Sample: Pumpkin), create a magic circle of 5 sc sts. Pull closed and sl st to join. (5sts)
2. Ch 1, 2sc in each st to end of round, sl st to join. (10sts)
3. *ch 3, sl st in the 2nd ch from hook, hdc in the next ch, sk 1 on the circle, sl st in the next st*, repeat 2 more times. Sl st in each st to the end of the round. Finish off and weave in ends.
4. This step creates a leg. With the same hook and yarn, ch 10, sl st middle of one foot to attach the two, sl st in each ch across the leg.
5. Flatten the pouch and sl st around a post near the bottom. Finish off and use a yarn needle and yarn tail to further secure the leg.

Repeat for the second leg.

Wings – Make 2

1. With an I hook and worsted weight yarn (Sample: White), ch 9, sc in the 2nd ch from hook, sc 5, hdc, 2hdc on the last ch. (9sts)
2. Ch 1, turn, hdc in the same st, hdc 2, sc 6.
3. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st, sc 5, hdc 3.
4. Repeat steps 2-3.
5. Ch 1, turn, hdc in the same st, hdc 2, sc 6.
6. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st, sc 5, hdc, hdc2tog. (8sts)
7. Finish off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing. Fold the wing in half, matching up the long edges. Sew the edges together. Use the remaining yarn to sew the short end of the wing to the pouch.

Repeat for the second wing.

Jack-o’-Lantern – Make 2

1. With an H hook and worsted weight yarn (Sample: Pumpkin), ch 6, 2sc in the 2nd ch from hook, sc 3, 2sc in the last st. (7sts)
2. Ch 1, turn, 2sc in the same st, sc 5, 2sc in the last st. (9sts)
3. Ch 1, turn, 2sc in the same st, sc 7, 2sc in the last st. (11sts)
4. Rows 4-7: Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st and in each st to end of row.
5. Row 8: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc 7, sc2tog. (9sts)
6. Row 9: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc 5, sc2tog. (7sts)
7. Row 10: Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st and in each st to end of row.
8. Row 11: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, hdc 3, sc2tog. (5sts)
9. Row 12: Finish off the orange yarn.

Repeat for a second pumpkin.

Face: With a yarn needle and black yarn, stitch a face to one side of the pumpkin.

Assembly: Stack the pumpkins on top of each other, with the face on top. With an H hook and matching yarn, sc through both layers around the edge, working 2sc in the corners. Before the round is complete, lightly stuff the pumpkin.

Stem

1. Attach green yarn to the 2nd st from the right. Ch 1, sc2tog, sc2tog. (2sts)
2. Ch 1, turn, sc 2. (2sts)
3. Ch 2, turn, sl st in the 2nd st. Finish off and weave in ends.

Leaf: With an H hook and worsted weight yarn (Sample: Paddy), ch 4, sl st in the 2nd ch from hook, hdc, (hdc, ch 1, sl st) in the last ch. Finish off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing the leaf to the pumpkin.

Use a yarn needle and the yarn tail to sew the leaf at the base of the stem.

With a yarn needle and the same yarn used for the wings, sew the bottom ends of the arms on top of the pumpkin to hold it in place.
