Mini Football Fan
Apparently the big porch geese weren’t the only ones who needed game-day outfits. 🏈😂 The little members of the Snappy Tots flock wanted in too!
The Mini Football Fan includes a football-shaped suit plus hat instructions for both the Mini Dress Up Goose and Mini Dress Up Llama.
Mine, naturally, ended up in Broncos colors. 🧡💙 Swap those colors for your favorite team and you’ve got one very small — and very enthusiastic — football fan.
This outfit was designed for my crocheted Mini Dress Up Goose and Mini Dress Up Llama.
Suggestions are included throughout the suit instructions to help with fit, so keep your little fan nearby while you crochet.

Mini Football Fan Crochet Pattern
Materials
- Yarn: Worsted weight yarn
- Sample Yarns: Red Heart Super Saver Chocolate, Aran, Pumpkin and Royal; I Love This Yarn Forest and Graymist
- Crochet Hook: H (5mm)
- Notions: Yarn needle for weaving in ends
- Optional: Measuring tape and scissors
Measurements & Gauge
- Gauge: 2″ with an H hook = 8 rounds sc, 7 sc sts
- Suggestions are made throughout the suit instructions to help with fit.
- Stuffed goose measurement for comparison: 4.5″ around the neck; 5″ around the top of the head; 5.75″ at the bottom of the neck where it meets the body; 6.75″ tall
Pattern Tips
- The first stitch of each row is worked into the same stitch as the turning chain unless worked in the round.
- Numbers at the beginning of each line may refer to steps and not indicate the number of rows.
- Stitch count remains the same unless noted at the end of the row or round.
- Finger shape the pieces for a smooth edge.
- Reminder: sc 3 means sc one stitch in each of the next 3 stitches; 3sc in next st means work 3 sc stitches in the next single stitch.
Football Suit
This starts at the tail and is worked toward the neck.
Finished suit measures approximately 7.25″ long x 2.75″ wide at the neck and 3.75″ across the opening.
- With an H hook and worsted weight yarn (Sample: RHSS Coffee), start with a magic circle of 6 sc sts (or preferred method of starting a circle of 6 sc sts), pull to close and sl st to join. (6sts)
- Ch 1, *sc, 2sc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (9sts)
- Ch 1, *sc 2, 2sc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (12sts)
- Ch 1, *sc 2, 2sc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (16sts)
- Ch 1, *sc 3, 2sc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (20sts)
- Ch 1, *sc 4, 2sc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (24sts)
- Ch 1, *sc 5, 2sc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (28sts)
- Change to worsted weight yarn for the stripe (Sample: RHSS Aran). Do not finish off the main color yarn. Ch 1, sc in the same st and in each st to end of round, sl st to join.
- Ch 1, sc in the same st and in each st to end of round, sl st to join. Finish off the current yarn.
- With the main color, ch 1, sc in the same st and in each st to end of round, sl st to join.
- Ch 1, hdc 4, sc 12, hdc 4. Leave 8 sts unworked. This starts an opening at the bottom of the suit. (20sts)
- Ch 1, turn, 2hdc in the same st, hdc 3, sc 12, hdc 3, 2hdc in the last st. (22sts)
- Ch 1, turn, 2hdc in the same st, hdc 3, sc 14, hdc 3, 2hdc in the last st. (24sts)
- Ch 1, turn, 2hdc in the same st, hdc 3, sc 16, hdc 3, 2hdc in the last st. (26sts)
- Ch 1, turn, 2hdc in the same st, hdc 3, sc 18, hdc 3, 2hdc in the last st. (28sts)
- Ch 1, turn, 2hdc in the same st, hdc 3, sc 20, hdc 3, 2hdc in the last st. (30sts)
- Ch 1, turn, 2hdc in the same st, hdc 4, sc 20, hdc 4, 2hdc in the last st, ch 4, sl st in the first st at the beginning of the round to join the piece in a circle. (36sts)
- Ch 1, hdc in the same st, hdc 3, hdc2tog, *sc 4, sc2tog*, repeat until 6 sts remain, hdc 4, hdc2tog. (30sts)
- Ch 1, hdc in the same st, hdc 4, sc2tog, sc 16, sc2tog, hdc 5, sl st to join. (28sts)
- Ch 1, hdc in the same st, hdc 4, sc2tog, sc 14, sc2tog, hdc 5, sl st to join. (26sts)
- Ch 1, hdc in the same st, hdc 4, sc2tog, sc 12, sc2tog, hdc 5, sl st to join. (24sts)
- Change to worsted weight yarn for the stripe (Sample: RHSS Aran). Do not finish off the main color yarn. Ch 1, sc in the same st and in each st to end of round, sl st to join.
- Ch 1, *sc 10, sc2tog*, repeat once, sl st to join. (22sts) Finish off the current yarn.
- With the main color, ch 1, hdc in the same st and in each st to end of round, sl st to join.
- Ch 1, *FPHDC around the next post, BPHDC around the next post*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. Finish off and weave in ends.
Bottom Band
- Flatten the piece as shown in the photo. With an H hook and matching yarn, sl st in a st at the edge of the opening. Ch 1, hdc 9 along the side of the opening. Hdc2tog at the corner (in the side and first st of the row). Hdc 3, hdc2tog, hdc 2. Hdc2tog at the next corner (in the last st and in the side). Hdc 9 evenly spaced along the side, sl st to join. (26sts)
- Ch 1, *FPHDC around the next post, BPHDC around the next post*, repeat around the entire opening, sl st to join. Finish off and weave in ends.
Football Lacing
Trim: With an H hook and the same color from the stripes, ch 10, sl st in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
With a yarn needle, use the yarn tail to sew the piece to the middle of the suit as shown in the photo. Create the lines across the trim piece with the same yarn.
Mini Goose Hat
This starts at the front of the hat and is worked back and forth in rows to the back.
- With an H hook and worsted weight yarn (Sample: RHSS Pumpkin), ch 18, sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (17sts)
- Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st and in each st to end of row.
- Ch 1, turn, sc 6, sc2tog, sc, sc2tog, sc 6. (15sts)
- Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st and in each st to end of row.
- Ch 1, turn, sc 2, sc2tog, sc, sc2tog, sc, sc2tog, sc, sc2tog, sc 2. (11sts)
- Ch 1, turn, *sc2tog, sc*, repeat until 2 sts remain, sc2tog. (8sts) Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing the back.
Fold the last row with right sides together. With a yarn needle, use the yarn tail to sew the sts of the final row together. Turn the hat right side out.
With an H hook and matching yarn, sl st in the front corner to work across the beginning edge. Ch 1, hdc in the same st and in each st across until 1 st remains, 3hdc in the last st. Hdc evenly across the bottom edge of the hat, working 2hdc in the corner, sl st in the first st to join.
Ch 1, *FPHDC around the next post, BPHDC around the next post*, repeat around the entire edge of the hat, sl st to join. Finish off and weave in ends.
Braids
Cut 4 strands of one color and 6 strands of another color 10″ long. Divide the strands into 2 sets.
Pull the ends of one set of yarn strands through one front corner of the hat until the ends are even with each other. Divide into 3 sections. Braid. Wrap a piece of matching yarn near the bottom of the braid and tie a knot.
Trim the ends to the desired length. Tip: I like to pull the yarn tails apart for a frizzy look. Repeat for the second braid.
Pompom — Optional
Cut a piece of matching yarn 10″ long and set aside. This will be used to tie around the middle of the pompom.
Hold one strand of yarn and wrap around 3 of your fingers (or something similar in size) 8 times. Cut the yarn, slide the loops off your fingers carefully, and place on a flat surface.
Wrap the 10″ piece of yarn around the middle of the pompom loops and tie a knot. Hold the yarn tails from the center piece and trim the pompom until it is the size and shape you would like. Use the yarn tails to sew the pompom to the top center of your beanie.
Mini Llama Hat
This starts at the front of the hat and is worked back and forth in rows to the back.
- With an H hook and worsted weight yarn (Sample: Forest), ch 19, sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (18sts)
- This step creates an opening for the ears. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st, sc 4, ch 8, sk 8, sc 5.
- Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st, sc 4, sc 8 around the ch, sc 5.
- Ch 1, turn, *sc 4, sc2tog*, repeat to end of row. (15sts)
- Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st and in each st to end of row.
- Ch 1, turn, sc 2, sc2tog, sc, sc2tog, sc, sc2tog, sc, sc2tog, sc 2. (11sts)
- Ch 1, turn, *sc2tog, sc*, repeat until 2 sts remain, sc2tog. (8sts) Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing the back.
Follow the instructions for the goose hat to finish.
