Free Pattern: Bananas for Candy Corn Bag and Hat

A few years ago I got this idea to make a banana shaped tote and made a monkey shaped coin purse. It turned out to be a funny bag and I had some people ask if I could include instructions for a hat. Then, one of my testers, Shaunna Hallsson, made a cute candy corn bag version. Instructions for all of these options are included in the pattern below.

Materials

Yarn: Worsted weight yarn in Red Heart Bright Yellow, Buff, Cafe Late, Soft White, Red, Coffee (or choice of colors). Yardage will vary depending on which version is made, approximately 150 yards yellow, 100 yards Tan, 50 yards brown.

Crochet Hooks: H, I

Miscellaneous: yarn needle, 2 small black buttons (optional for monkey eyes), oval coin purse (optional)

Gauge: 4″ = 13hdc and 9 rounds

Sizes: Hat includes sizes newborn to adult.

Notes: All hat sizes start the same. Continue working increase rounds until desired size is

noted. Do not join at the end of each round. Use a marker (such as a scrap piece of yarn) to keep track of the beginning of the round.

Directions – Banana Bag

With H hook and brown worsted weight yarn, start with a magic circle of 6 sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 6 sc sts). Place marker to keep track of beginning of round.

1. 2sc in each st to end of round. (12sts)

2-3. Sc in each st to end of round.

4. Change to yellow yarn. *sc 2, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (16sts)

5. *sc 3, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (20sts)

6. Sc in each st to end of round.

7. *sc 3, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (25sts)

8. *sc 4, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (30sts)

9. Repeat round 8. (36sts)

10. Note: stitch changes to hdc. *hdc 8, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (40sts)

11-12. Hdc in each st to end of round.

13. *hdc 7, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (45sts)

14. *hdc 8, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (50sts)

15. Hdc in each st to end of round.

16. *hdc 9, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (55sts)

17. Hdc in each st to en of round.

24. Sc in next st, sl st in next st. Working in FLO for this row, ch 1, sc 13, ch 2, turn. This begins first
      “peeled” section. *hdc in next 12 sts, ch 2, turn*, repeat until 4 sts remain. Finish off and weave in
      end.

25. Attach soft white yarn to back loop of round 24. Working in remaining (back loops), ch 1, sc in each
      st to end of round, sl st to join.

26. Ch 2, *hdc2tog, hdc 11*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (60sts)

27-28, Ch 2, hdc in each st to end of round, sl st to join.

Finish off and weave in ends.

Handle: With H hook and soft white yarn, ch 41, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st to end of row. Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st to end of row. Ch 1, turn, sc in each st to end of row. Finish off, leaving a tail for sewing handle to bag.

Lay bag on a flat surface. With yarn needle and matching yarn, attach one short end of handle to top, center of one side of bag. Flip bag over. Attach other short end of handle to top, center of bag, directly across from first end.

Directions: Hat

Directions for Baby Size (0-6 mths) Hat:

With H hook brown worsted weight yarn, start with a magic circle of 6 sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 6 sc sts). Place marker to keep track of beginning of round.

1. 2sc in each st to end of round. (12sts)

2-3. Sc in each st to end of round.

4. Change to yellow yarn. *sc 2, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (16sts)

6. *sc 4, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (25sts)

7. Repeat previous round. (30sts)

8. Repeat round 6. (36sts)

9. Note: stitch changes to hdc. Hdc in each st to end of round.

10-13. Change to I hook. Hdc in each st to end of round.

14. Sc in next st, sl st in next st. Working in FLO for this row, ch 1, sc 7, ch 2, turn. This begins first

Directions for Teen/ Small Adult Size Hat:

Monkey Coin Purse

This starts at back of mouth section, and then top/head is added afterwards.

1. With H hook and brown yarn, ch 10, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in

    next 7 chs, 3sc in last ch. Working along back edge of ch, sc 7, 2sc in
    last st, sl st to join (20sts)

2. Ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc 9, 3hdc in next st, hdc 9, 2hdc in next st, sl
    st to join. (24sts)

3. Ch 2, *hdc 3, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (30sts)

4. Change to cream yarn. Working in BLO, ch 1, sc in each st to end of

    round, sl st to join. (30sts)

5. Ch 1, sc 11, sc2tog, sc 14, sc2tog, sc, sl st to join. (28sts)

6. Ch 1, sc 2, sc2tog, *sc 4, sc2tog*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (23sts)

7. Change to red yarn. Ch 1, sc, *sc2tog, sc 2*, repeat until 2sts remain,

    sc2tog, sl st to join. (17sts) Finish off and weave in ends. Insert coin purse.

Head: Leave a tail at beginning for sewing to mouth section. With H hook and brown yarn, ch 11, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across.

1. Ch 2, turn, hdc in same st and in each st across.

2. Ch 2, turn, hdc2tog, hdc in each st across until 2sts remain, hdc2tog.

3. Repeat previous row. Finish off and weave in end.

Ears (make 2): With H hook and brown yarn, start with a magic circle of 6sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 6 sc sts), join. (6sts)  2sc in each st to end of round. (12sts) Finish off, leaving a tail for sewing ear to head.

Eyes (make 2): With H hook and white yarn, start with a magic circle of 6sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 6 sc sts), join. (6sts)  Finish off, leaving a tail for sewing eye to head.

With yarn needle and yarn tail, sew pieces together as follows:

Head: sew bottom edge (widest part) of head to one long side of mouth section.

Ears: sew each ear to side of head.

Eyes: sew eyes in place with black button on top.

Add small brown pompom to top of head.

Attach coin purse chain to top of head and wrap around handle if desired.

Monkey Applique

Note: Use size F hook for smaller hats.

1. With G hook and red yarn, ch 10, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 7
    chs, 3sc in last ch. Working along back edge of ch, sc 7, 2sc in last st, sl
    st to join (20sts)

2. Change to cream yarn. Ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc 9, 3hdc in next st, hdc 9, 2hdc in next st, sl st to
    join. (24sts)

3. ch 2, *hdc 3, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (30sts)

4. Change to brown yarn. Ch 1, *sc 4, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of

    round. (36sts)

Finish off and weave in ends.

Head: Leave a tail at beginning for sewing to mouth section. With G hook and brown yarn, ch 11, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across.

1. Ch 2, turn, hdc in same st and in each st across.

2. Ch 2, turn, hdc2tog, hdc in each st across until 2sts remain, hdc2tog.

3. Repeat previous row. Finish off, leaving tail for sewing to mouth section.

Ears (make 2): With G hook and brown yarn, start with a magic circle of 6sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 6 sc sts), join. (6sts)  2sc in each st to end of round. (12sts) Finish off, leaving a tail for sewing ear to head.

Eyes (make 2): With G hook and white yarn, start with a magic circle of 6sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 6 sc sts), join. (6sts)  Finish off, leaving a tail for sewing eye to head.

With yarn needle and yarn tail, sew pieces together as follows:

Monkey Head Stuffie:

Note: these are fun for little ones to learn colors. Make several in each color of the rainbow. Use safety eyes instead of buttons for small children.

Make monkey applique, and then make another in all brown, leaving off the eyes.

Stack first monkey head on top of all brown monkey head. With yarn needle and brown yarn, stitch pieces together, stuffing lightly before finished. Weave in yarn tail.


Directions for Candy Corn Bag

With H hook and white worsted weight yarn, start with a magic circle of 6 sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 6 sc sts). Place marker to keep track of beginning of round.

1. 2sc in each st to end of round. (12sts)

2. Sc in each st to end of round.

3. *sc 2, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (16sts)

4. *sc 3, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (20sts)

5. Sc in each st to end of round.

6. *sc 3, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (25sts)

7. *sc 4, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (30sts)

8. Change to orange yarn. Repeat round 7. (36sts)

9. Note: stitch changes to hdc. *hdc 8, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round.
    (40sts)

10-11. Hdc in each st to end of round.

12. *hdc 7, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (45sts)

13. *hdc 8, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (50sts)

14. Hdc in each st to end of round.

15. *hdc 9, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (55sts)

16. Hdc in each st to en of round.

17. *hdc 10, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (60sts)

18. *hdc 11, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (65sts)

19. Change to yellow yarn. Hdc in each st to end of round.

20-23. Hdc in each st to end of round.

24. Ch 2, *hdc2tog, hdc 11*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (60sts)

25-27. Hdc in each st to end of round.

28. Hdc in each st to end of round, sc in next st, sl st in next st.

Finish off and weave in ends.
