Materials

  • Yarn: 100-125 yards worsted weight yarn in a variety of colors
  • Miscellaneous: Yarn needle, measuring tape
  • Crochet Hook: H (5mm), J (6mm)

Details

  • Measurements: 7.5” wide (measured flat) x 9” tall

Tips

  • The first stitch of each row is worked into the same stitch as the turning chain unless noted.
  • Numbers at the beginning of each line may refer to steps and not indicate number of rows.

Directions

1. With a J hook and worsted weight yarn, start with a magic circle of 8 sc sts (or preferred method of starting a circle of 8 sc sts), pull closed and sl st to join. (8sts)

2. Ch 1, 2hdc in the same st and in each st to end of round, sl st to join. (16sts)

3. Ch 1, *hdc, 2hdc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (24sts)

4. Ch 1, *hdc 2, 2hdc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (32sts)

5. Ch 1, *hdc 3, 2hdc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (40sts)

6. Ch 1, *hdc 4, 2hdc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (48sts)

7. Ch 1, hdc in the same st and in each st to end of round, sl st to join.

8. Repeat the previous round, changing colors as desired, for an additional 14 rounds or more for a taller bag.

Note about color changes: When changing colors, finish off the current yarn and leave at least a 5” tail for weaving in when the bag is complete.

9. Ch 1, sc in the same st and in each st to end of round, sl st to join. Finish off and weave in ends.

Turn the bag inside out to make it easier to weave in the yarn tails. Turn right side out when complete.

Drawstring: With an H hook, ch 85. Finish off and tie a knot in each end of the drawstring.

Pull one end of the drawstring between two posts of the last hdc round. Weave the drawstring *under the next post, over the next post*, repeat around the bag. Pull the end between two posts near the entry point. Tie the two ends in a knot.
