Free Pattern: Wedding Blanket Crochet Along

This spring I had an amazing opportunity to be part of a really special present. I am part of Red Heart Yarns Joy Creators and our fabulous leader recently got married. We were each asked to design a 12″ square in her wedding colors, Navy, Tan and Cream. Here is my block:

I actually made several different blocks before creating this one. I wanted something extra special. I also felt some intimidation being part of a blanket, surrounded by amazing designers. I think it fits in great! Here is the finished blanket:

She LOVED it! I will be able to share a video soon of her opening it. Wait til you see her reaction. It is wonderful and I am so glad they did a video.

Thank you to Red Heart Yarns for supplying the yarn for this project. I really enjoy Chic Sheep yarn! I hope you will give it a try.

Let’s Make The Blanket!

You can make the blanket too! Each of the block patterns will be available for free from each of the designers. You can get the links to each pattern on the MAIN CROCHET ALONG page, released each Friday and Monday (starting with mine, YAY!).

YOUR Blanket

What colors will you use and who will you make it for? Whether you make the full blanket or some throw pillows, I would LOVE to see your creations. Please add #snappytots to your social media posts when sharing pix of your blocks so we can follow along with everyone.

You can also share your pix, color choices or ask questions in my facebook group, Totally Snappy.

Directions

Color changes written for the sample. Note: The bumpy ridge around the center circle is added after block is complete.

  1. With an I hook and Suede yarn, start with a magic circle of 8 hdc sts (or preferred method for creating a circle of 8 hdc sts), pull closed and sl st in first st to join. (8sts)
  2. Ch 2, work 2 FPDC around each post to end of round, sl st in first st to join. (16sts)
  3. Ch 2, FPDC around first post, hdc in space before next post, *FPDC around next post, hdc in space before next post*, repeat to end of round, sl st in first st to join. (32sts) 2.5” across
  4. Ch 1, *BPSC around each of the next 3 posts, 2 BPSC around next post*, repeat to end of round, sl st in first st to join. (40sts)
  5. Change to VIP yarn. Ch 2, *hdc 4, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st in first st to join. (48sts) 3.75” across
  6. Change to Linen yarn. Ch 2, hdc in same st, sl st in next st, *hdc in next st, sl st in next st*, repeat once, (hdc, sl st) in next st, **hdc  in next st, sl st in next st*, repeat 2 more times, (hdc, sl st) in next st*, repeat until 6 sts remain, *hdc in next st, sl st in next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st in first st to join. (54sts) 4.25” across
  7.  Ch 2, TURN, hdc in same st, sl st in next st, *hdc in next st, sl st in next st*, repeat 2 more times, (hdc, sl st) in next st, **hdc  in next st, sl st in next st*, repeat 3 more times, (hdc, sl st) in next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st in first st to join. (60sts) 4.75” across
  8.  Ch 2, TURN, hdc in same st, sl st in next st, hdc in next st, sl st in next st, hdc in next st, (hdc, sl st) in next st, **hdc  in next st, sl st in next st*, repeat once, hdc in next st, (hdc, sl st) in next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st in first st to join. (70sts) 5.5” across
  9. Note: be aware of the different sts used in this round. This is not a typo. Ch 1, 2sc in same st, hdc 6, *2sc in next st, hdc 6*, repeat to end of round, sl st in first st to join. (80sts) 6.25” across

Note: The dc sts in steps 10-11 are worked as “long dc”. See information on page 1 of this pattern.

  1. Change to VIP yarn. Ch 2 (counts as a stitch this round), 5dc in BASE of first increase (2sc) from previous round working over the sts, ch 3, sk 7, *6dc in base of increase from previous round, ch 3, sk 7*, repeat to end of round, sl st in first st to join. (90sts) 7” across
  1. Change to Linen yarn. Ch 1, TURN, working into sts one round below (around the ch 3 from previous round), *sk 2, 3dc in next st, 3dc in next st, sk 2, 4sc in middle of 6dc cluster*, repeat to end of round, sl st in first st to join. (100sts) 8.25” across

Note: At this point the piece might be a little wonky and not lay flat. That’s ok and will work out in the end. Plus, it can also be blocked to shape if needed.

  1. Change to Suede yarn. Ch 1, TURN, sc in same st, sc 23, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next st, *sc 24, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st in first st to join. (104sts plus 8 chs) 8.5” across

  1. Ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc 4, sc 16, hdc 5, (2hdc, ch 2, 2hdc) in ch 2 space from previous round, *hdc 5, sc 16, hdc 5, (2hdc, ch 2, 2hdc) in ch 2 space from previous round*, repeat to end of round, sl st in first st to join. (120sts plus 8 chs) 9.5” across

Finish off and weave in ends.

  1. Attach VIP yarn to any corner chain space.  Work in BLO for this round. Corners not included. Ch 2 (counts as a stitch for this round), dc, ch 2, 2dc in corner space. *dc 7, hdc 16, dc 7, (2dc, ch 2, 2dc) in corner space*, repeat to end of round. Sl st in first st to join. (136sts plus 8 chs) 10.5” across
  1. Sl st to ch 2 corner space. Ch 2 (counts as a stitch for this round), dc, ch 2, 2dc in corner space. *dc 7, hdc 19, dc 7, (2dc, ch 2, 2dc) in corner space*, repeat to end of round. Sl st in first st to join. (148sts plus 8 chs) 11.25” across

STOP and measure from side to side. Adjust the number of rounds from this point on as needed to meet 12”.

  1. Sl st to ch 2 corner space. Ch 1, *(sc, ch 1, sc) in corner space, sc 36*, repeat to end of round, sl st in first st to join. Finish off and weave in ends. (152sts plus 4 chs)  11.5” across
  1. Attach Linen yarn to any corner chain space. Work in BLO for this round. Ch 1, *(sc, ch 1, sc) in corner space, sc 37*, repeat to end of round, sl st to first st to join. (156sts plus 4 chs) 11.75” across
  1. Ch 1, *(sc, ch 1, sc) in corner space, sc 38*, repeat to end of round, sl st to first st to join. (160sts plus 4 chs) 12” across

STOP and measure from side to side. If 12” across, finish off and weave in all ends. If short, add more rounds as needed, adding one more sc to each repeat per round.

Center trim: With an H hook, attach Suede yarn to a post behind the center ridge. Ch 3, sl st around next post, sl st around next post, repeat to end of round. Finish off and weave in end.

Block square into shape if needed.
