Happy Birthday Dr Seuss Crochet Hat

Today, March 2, is Dr. Seuss’ birthday. To celebrate I hope you will enjoy my twist on this famous Seuss-ish hat.

A Cat in My Hat

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss

Materials

Yarn: worsted weight yarn in red, white, black; Lion Brand Homespun Black

Crochet Hooks: I

Miscellaneous: yarn needle

Gauge: 4″ = 13hdc and 9 rows

Sizes: toddler – adult

Notes:
Do not join at the end of each round. This hat is worked in a continuous round to avoid a “seam” look. Use a marker (such as a scrap piece of yarn) to keep track of the begin-ning of the round.

Toddler Size
Directions: With I hook and yarn, start with a magic loop of 6 sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 6 sc sts), join and pull closed.
1.    2sc in each stitch to end of round. (12sts)
2.    2sc in each stitch to end of round. (24sts)
3.    *sc, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (36sts)
4.    *sc 2, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (48sts)
5.    *sc 7, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (54sts)
6.    *sc 8, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (60sts)
7.    *sc 9, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (66sts)
8.    *sc 10, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (72sts)
9.    *sc 11, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (78sts)
10.    *sc 12, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (84sts)
11.    Working in BLO, sc in each st to end of round.
12.    *sc 12, sc2tog*, repeat to end of round. (78sts)
13.    *sc 11, sc2tog*, repeat to end of round. (72sts)
14-15. Sc in each stitch to end of round.
16. *sc 10, sc2tog*, repeat to end of round. (66sts)
17. Sc in each stitch to end of round. Change to white.
18. *hdc 9, hdc2tog*, repeat to end of round. (60sts)
19. Hdc in each stitch to end of round.
20. *hdc 8, hdc2tog*, repeat to end of round. (54sts)
21. Hdc in each stitch to end of round. Change to red.
22. *hdc 7, hdc2tog*, repeat to end of round. (48sts).
23-24. Hdc in each stitch to end of round. After second round, change to white.
25. Working in FLO, sc in each stitch to end of round.
26. *sc 5, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (56sts)
27. *sc 6, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (64sts)
28. *sc 7, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (72sts)
29. *sc 5, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (80sts)
30. Sc 3, *sc 5, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (88sts)
31. Sl st in each st around. Finish off and weave in all ends.

Attach black ww yarn + black homespun yarn to back loops of round #25. Ch 1, sc in each stitch around. (48sts)
32. *Sc2tog, sc 10, sc2tog, sc 10*, repeat from * to * one time. (44sts)
33-34. Sc in each stitch around.
Sc 12, Turn (do not ch 1).
Sk first st, sc across. Turn (do not ch 1).
Repeat previous row until no st are left. Finish off.
Fold hat in half to find placement for 2nd earflap. It should start exactly across from the first flap. Starting on the RS of the hat, attach yarn and follow directions for earflap. At-tach braids if desired.
Cut 6, 20” strands of black. Use a yarn needle to pull end through one side of hat. Pull through until even with other end and braid. Tie a knot near the end of the braid. Trim bottom edge. Repeat for other side.

Ears (make 2): With both strands of black, ch 6, hdc in second ch from hook and across. Ch 2, turn.
*Hdc in each st across, ch 2, turn*, repeat once. Hdc 2tog, hdc 2, hdc2tog, ch 2, turn. Hdc 2tog, hdc2tog, ch 2 turn. Hdc2tog, ch 1, sc down left side of ear, finish off, leav-ing a long tail for attaching to hat.

White of ears (make 2): With white yarn, ch 6, hdc in second ch from hook and across. Ch 2, turn.
*Hdc in each st across, ch 2, turn*, repeat once. Hdc 2tog, hdc 2, hdc2tog, ch 2, turn. Sc 2tog, sc2tog, ch 2 turn. Sc2tog, finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing to ear.

Use yarn tail and yarn needle to sew the white ear to the larger black ear.
Repeat for other ear.

Fold bottom edge of ear in half and sew the ear to the hat, using a yarn needle.

16-17. Sc in each stitch to end of round.
18. *sc 12, sc2tog*, repeat to end of round. (78sts)
19-20. Sc in each stitch to end of round. After second round, change to white.
22. *hdc 11, hdc2tog*, repeat to end of round. (72sts)
23. Hdc in each stitch to end of round.
24. *hdc 10, hdc2tog*, repeat to end of round. (66sts)
25. Hdc in each stitch to end of round. Change to red.
26. *hdc 9, hdc2tog*, repeat to end of round. (60sts).
27-28. Hdc in each stitch to end of round. After second round, change to white.
29. Working in FLO, sc in each stitch to end of round.
30. *sc 5, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (70sts)
31. *sc 6, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (80sts)
32. *sc 7, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (90sts)
33. *sc 5, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (105sts)
34. Sc 3, *sc 5, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (120sts)
35. Sl st in each st around. Finish off and weave in all ends.

Attach black ww yarn + black homespun yarn to back loops of round #29. Ch 1, sc in each stitch around. (60sts)

Child Size ONLY:
36. *sc 9, sc2tog*, repeat to end of round (54sts)
37. *Sc2tog, sc 10, sc2tog, sc 13*, repeat from * to * one time. (50sts) Skip to #38

Teen/Adult Size ONLY:
36-37. Hdc in each stitch to end of round.

38-39. Sc in each stitch around.
Sc 14, Turn (do not ch 1).
Sk first st, sc across. Turn (do not ch 1).
