  • Crochet Hook: H (5mm)
  • Miscellaneous: Yarn needle, 2 large snaps to match the calendar, 2 small black buttons for the eyes, sewing needle, black thread.

Tips

  • Stitch count remains the same unless noted at end of row.
  • If you have any questions about this pattern please contact [email protected].

Owl

Body

1. This piece starts at the bottom edge of the owl. With H hook and orange ww yarn, ch 10, sc in 2nd ch from

hook and in each ch across. (9sts)

2-3. Ch 1, turn, sc in each st to end of row.

4. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc 5, sc2tog. (7sts)

5-6. Ch 1, turn, sc in each st to end of row.

7. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc 5. (6sts)

8. Ch 1, turn, sc 4, sc2tog. (5sts)

9. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc, sc2tog. (3sts)

10. This step is worked around the outer edge of the owl. Ch 1. Pivot piece to work along one long edge of the owl. Sc evenly down the side, working 2sc in the corner, sc in each st across, working 3sc in the corner.

Sc evenly along the next long edge of the owl, working 2sc in the corner. 2sc in next st (on top of the owl), sc2tog, sl st to end. Finish off and weave in ends.

Wings (make 2)

1. With an H hook and yarn color of choice (variegated in sample), ch 10, 2hdc in 3rd ch from hook, dc 6, 4hdc in last ch. Working across back loops of chain, hdc 7, sl st to join. Finish off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing to owl.

With a yarn needle use the yarn tail to sew the wings to the body. These overlap the outer edges of the owl.

Eyes (make 2)

With an H hook and white yarn, create a magic circle of 5 sc sts (or preferred method for creating a circle of 5 sc sts), pull closed and sl st to join. (5sts) Finish off, leaving a tail for sewing in place.

With a yarn needle and yarn tails, sew eyes in place. With a sewing needle and thread, sew a black button to each white eye piece.

Beak: With yarn needle and yarn color of choice (yellow in sample), stitch beak in place (see main photo).

Tufts of hair: Cut 3 strands yarn 4” long. Fold in half and pull the center loops of all yarn pieces through one top corner of the head. Tip: I insert my hook from the back and pull the loops through to the back. This way when I pull the yarn tails through the loops the loops will be towards the front of the owl.

Pull yarn tails through the center loops and pull snug. Pull yarn tails apart for a frizzy look. Repeat for other corner of head.

Large Flower

1. With an H hook and brown yarn, create a magic circle of 5 sc sts (or preferred method for creating a circle of 5 sc sts), pull closed and sl st to join. (5sts)

2. Ch 1, 2hdc in each st to end of round, sl st to join. (10sts)

3. Finish off the brown yarn and change to golden yellow. Ch 2, turn, *tr (treble crochet) in the same st, ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, tr in the same st (on flower center), ch 3, sl st in next st on flower center*, repeat until 5 petals are complete. There will be sts left unworked. Finish off and weave in ends.

Place the flower center behind an owl wing so all of the petals can be seen. Cut a 12” piece of yarn that you used to make the wing. With a yarn needle, use the yarn piece to sew the flower and owl together.

Small Flowers On The Tiles

1. Follow the main calendar pattern to create the tiles. Since “September” is our longest month (word) I chose to make “SEPT”. I used white yarn.

2. For the flowers I picked a different place for each one. I avoided placing them between tiles because my tiles will fit next to each other. Each flower is created the same way. Choose a st on the outer edge of one of the tiles.

With an H hook, attach brown yarn to this st. Ch 1, 3sc in the same st. (3sts)

3. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st, sc 2, sc in the original st on the tile. (4sts)

4. Finish off the brown yarn and change to golden yellow. Ch 2, turn, *dc in the same st, ch 2, sl st in the 2nd ch from hook, dc in the same st as the previous dc, ch 2, sl st in next st*, repeat until 3 petals are complete. Finish off and weave in ends.

Repeat for additional tiles.

Assembly

  • Attach the tiles to the calendar with brads or desired items.
  • Snaps: Center the owl/flower over the snaps already sewn to the organizer to find placement. Sew two coordinating snap pieces to the back of the owl/flower so they line up with the snaps on the organizer.
