Directions

Rug

  • This starts at the bottom (striped) edge.
  • Substitute colors as desired. For a list of the colors used in each sample, see page 3.
  • The stitch count for the main rug will be 20sts for each row.

1. With an H hook and first stripe color, ch 21, sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (20sts)

2. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st and in each st across.

3. Finish off the current color and change to the second stripe color. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st and in each st across.

4. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st and in each st across.

5. Finish off the current color and change to the first stripe color. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st and in each st across.

6. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st and in each st across.

7. Finish off the current color and change to the second stripe color. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st and in each st across.

8. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st and in each st across.

9. Finish off the current color and change to the first stripe color. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st and in each st across.

10. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st and in each st across.

11. Finish off the current color and change to the color for the top section. Ch 1, turn, sc in BLO in each st across. This is the right side of the piece.

12. Ch 1, turn, hdc in the same st, sc in the next st, *hdc in the next st, sc in the next st*, repeat to end of row.

13. Repeat the previous row for an additional 4 rows.

14. Ch 1, turn, sk the current st (the beginning chain will count as the first st), sl st in each st across. Finish off and weave in ends.

15. With the right side facing, attach matching yarn to the bottom, right corner. Sl st in each st across. Finish off and weave in ends. This will add a similar finish to the bottom edge, plus helps keep the corners from curling.

Eyes (make 2)

1. With an H hook and white ww yarn, start with a magic circle of 5 sc sts (or preferred method of starting a circle of 5 sc sts), pull closed and sl st to join. (5sts)

2. Ch 1, 2sc in each st to end of round, sl st to join. (10sts) Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing to the rug.

With a yarn needle, use the yarn tails to sew the eyes to the center of the rug, where the head and stripe section meet.

With a sewing needle and black thread, sew a black button on top of each white eyepiece.

Beak: With a yarn needle and ww yarn (pumpkin or gold in samples), create the beak by taking several stitches into the bottom edges of the eyes to a point below the center. See main photos for placement.

Note: I wanted my beaks to be thick and puffy so I kept my yarn doubled and took several stitches.

Wings (make 2 per rug)

1. With an H hook and ww yarn, ch 9, sc2tog (2nd and 3rd chains from hook), 2hdc in the next ch, dc 2, 2hdc in the next ch, sc2tog. (8sts)

2. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc, 2sc in the next st, sc 2, sc2tog. Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing to the rug.

With a yarn needle, use the yarn tails to sew the wings to the rugs at an angle. See main photos for placement.

Top Feathers

  • Cut 6 pieces of yarn 6” long. These can be all one color or a mix from the yarn palette. Separate them into 2 groups of 3 pieces.
  • Insert your hook into a top corner of the rug from the back to the front.
  • Fold three yarn pieces in half. Pull the middle loops to the back of the rug.
  • Pull the yarn ends through the middle loops until snug against the corner.
  • Trim the yarn ends, leaving at least 1.5”. Pull the yarn pieces apart for a frizzy look.
  • Repeat for the opposite corner.
