Free Pattern: Patriotic Goose Set

Patriotic Goose Outfit Crochet Pattern

Materials

  • Yarn: 100 yards each ww yarn in red, white and blue or colors of choice.
    • Yarns used in the sample: RHSS Cherry, White, Royal
  • Crochet Hooks: H (5mm) for stars, I (5.5mm) 
  • Supplies: Yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • Optional: Measuring tape, scissors

Measurements

  • Finished Measurements: 11” long x 16” wide across bottom edge (measured flat)/ 5.5” wide at neck
  • Gauge – 2” with an I hook = 6 hdc sts and 5 hdc rounds; 2.5 V st clusters x 3 V st rounds

Tips

  • First stitch of each row is worked into the same  stitch as the turning chain unless noted.
  • Numbers at the beginning of each line may refer to  steps and not indicate number of rows.
  • Stitch count remains the same unless noted at end of row/round.

Shirt

This starts at the neck edge and is worked in rounds to the bottom edge. Substitute colors as desired.

1. With an I hook and blue yarn, ch 40, sl st in the last ch from hook to form a circle. Make sure the chain is not twisted.

2. Ch 1, hdc in the same ch and in each ch around, sl st in the first st to join. (40sts)

3. Ch 1, hdc in the same st and in each st around, sl st to join.

4. Ch 1, *hdc 19, 2hdc in the next st*, repeat once, sl st to join. (42sts)

5. Ch 1, *hdc 20, 2hdc in the next st*, repeat once, sl st to join. (44sts)

6. Ch 1, *hdc 10, 2hdc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (48sts)

7. Ch 1, *hdc 11, 2hdc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (52sts)

8. Ch 1, *hdc 12, 2hdc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (56sts)

9. Finish off the blue yarn. Change to red yarn. Ch 4 (counts as a dc, ch 1), dc in the same st, sk 1, *(dc, ch 1, dc) in the next st, sk 1*, repeat to end of round, sl st in the first space to join. (28 V sts)

10. Note: For the following steps, the “space” refers to the middle of the V st from the previous round, between the two dc sts. 

Ch 4, dc in the same space, (dc, ch 1, dc) in the same space, *(dc, ch 1, dc) in the next space*, repeat across 13 V st spaces, (dc, ch 1, dc, dc, ch 1, dc) in the next space, *(dc, ch 1, dc) in the next space*, repeat across 13 V st spaces, sl st in the first space to join. (30 V sts)

11. Note: When changing colors, I did not cut the current yarn. Change to white yarn. Ch 4, dc in the same space, (dc, ch 1, dc) in the next 6 V st spaces, (dc, ch 1, dc, dc, ch 1, dc) in the next V st space, (dc, ch 1, dc) in the next 14 V st spaces, (dc, ch 1, dc, dc, ch 1, dc) in the next V st space, (dc, ch 1, dc) in the next 7 V st spaces, sl st in the first space to join. (32 V sts)

12. Ch 4, dc in the same space, (dc, ch 1, dc) in the same space, (dc, ch 1, dc) in the next 15 V st spaces, (dc, ch 1, dc, dc, ch 1, dc) in the next space, (dc, ch 1, dc) in the next 15 V st spaces, sl st in the first space to join. (34 V sts)

13. Change to red yarn. Ch 4, dc in the same space, (dc, ch 1, dc) in the next 7 V st spaces, (dc, ch 1, dc, dc, ch 1, dc) in the next V st space, (dc, ch 1, dc) in the next 16 V st spaces, (dc, ch 1, dc, dc, ch 1, dc) in the next V st space, (dc, ch 1, dc) in the next 8 V st spaces, sl st in the first space to join. (36 V sts)

14. Ch 4, dc in the same space, (dc, ch 1, dc) in each V st space to the end of the round, sl st in the first space to join. 

15. Change to white yarn. Ch 4, dc in the same space, (dc, ch 1, dc) in each V st space to the end of the round, sl st in the first space to join. 

16. Repeat the previous round. 

17. Change to red yarn. Ch 4, dc in the same space, (dc, ch 1, dc) in each V st space to the end of the round, sl st in the first space to join. 

18. Repeat the previous round. 

19. Change to white yarn. Ch 4, dc in the same space, (dc, ch 1, dc) in the same space, (dc, ch 1, dc) in the next 17 V st spaces, (dc, ch 1, dc, dc, ch 1, dc) in the next space, (dc, ch 1, dc) in the next 17 V st spaces, sl st in the first space to join. (38 V sts)

20. Ch 4, dc in the same space, (dc, ch 1, dc) in the next 8 V st spaces, (dc, ch 1, dc, dc, ch 1, dc) in the next V st space, (dc, ch 1, dc) in the next 18 V st spaces, (dc, ch 1, dc, dc, ch 1, dc) in the next V st space, (dc, ch 1, dc) in the next 9 V st spaces, sl st in the first space to join. (40 V sts)

21. Change to red yarn. Ch 4, dc in the same space, (dc, ch 1, dc) in each V st space to the end of the round, sl st in the first space to join. 

22. Repeat the previous round. 

23. Ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in the same V st space, sl st in the space before the next V st, *(sc, ch 2, sc) in the next V st space, sl st in the space before the next V st*, repeat to end of round, sl st in the first st to join. Finish off and weave in ends. 

Stars (make 4 white)
1. With an H hook and white yarn, create a magic loop of 5 sc sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 5 sc sts), pull closed and sl st to join. (5sts) 

2. *ch 3, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in 3rd ch, sl st in next st on circle*, repeat to end of round. (5 points) Finish off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing to wings and bow.

Divide the top, blue section of the shirt in 1/4s and place a marker. With a yarn needle, use the yarn tail from each star to sew one white star to the blue section at each marker. 


Top Hat

1. With an H hook and worsted weight yarn (Royal Blue in sample), start with a magic circle of 8 sc sts (or preferred method for creating a circle of 8 sc sts), pull closed and sl st in the first st to join. (8sts)

2. Ch 1, 2sc in each st to end of round, sl st in the first st to join. (16sts)

3. Ch 1, *sc, 2sc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st in the first st to join. (24sts)

4. Ch 1, *sc, 2sc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st in the first st to join. (36sts)

5. Ch 1, *sc 5, 2sc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st in the first st to join. (42sts)

6. Ch 1, *sc 6, 2sc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st in the first st to join. (48sts) 3.5” across

7. Work this round in BLO and a little more snug than the previous rounds. Ch 1, sc in each st to end of round, sl st in the first st to join. 

8. Ch 1, sc in the same st and in each st to end of round, sl st in the first st to join. 

9. Ch 1, *hdc 4, hdc2tog*, repeat to end of round, sl st in the first st to join. (40sts)

10. Ch 1, *hdc 6, hdc2tog*, repeat to end of round, sl st in the first st to join. (35sts)

11. Ch 1, hdc in the same st and in each st to end of round, sl st in the first st to join. 

12. Do not cut the main yarn. Change yarn for the first round of the hat band (red in the sample). Ch 1, sc in the same st and in each st to end of round, sl st in the first st to join. 

13. Do not cut the red yarn. Change to white yarn. Ch 1, sc in the same st and in each st to end of round, sl st in the first st to join. 

14. Do not cut the white yarn. Change to red yarn.  Ch 1, sc in the same st and in each st to end of round, sl st in the first st to join. 

15. Do not cut the red yarn. Change to white yarn. Ch 1, sc in the same st and in each st to end of round, sl st in the first st to join. 

16. Cut the white yarn, leaving a long enough yarn tail to weave in later. Change to red yarn.  Ch 1, sc in the same st and in each st to end of round, sl st in the first st to join. 

17. Finish off the current yarn and change back to the main color. Work this round in FLO. Ch 1, sc in the same st and in each st to end of round, sl st in the first st to join. 

18. Ch 1, *sc 4, 2sc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (42sts)

19. Ch 1, *sc 5, 2sc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (49sts)

20. Ch 1, *sc 6, 2sc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (56sts)

21. Make sure the sts of this round is the same tension as before. Do not ch 1. Sl st in each to to end of round. Finish off and weave in ends. 

Chin Strap

Fold the hat in half to find the placement for the ties. With an H hook and ww yarn (white to match the goose), attach the yarn to an inside loop (so it doesn’t show on the outside of the hat). Ch 30. Finish off and tie a knot in the end of the chain. Repeat for the opposite side. 

Hat Bow

Follow the star pattern and make one more star with yellow yarn. Set aside.

Colored Loops: With an H hook and red yarn, ch 30, sl st in the last ch from the hook to join into a circle, ch 30, sl st into the same ch as before to create another circle. Place the loops on a flat surface the joined section in the middle. Place the star on top of the middle of the loops.

Use the yellow yarn tail from the star and a yarn needle to sew the middles of the loops to the back of the star. 

Use remaining yellow yarn tail to sew the bow to the hat band. See main photo for placment.
