Free Pattern: Snow More Pain Cold and Heat Pack

We use rice packs and “hot hands” all winter long. I thought it would be cute to make a wintery snowman cover for a rice pack that could be used hot and cold. Isn’t he cute?

Hot, Cold or Stuffed

This frosty guy is designed to slip over a heat/cold rice pack. He could be stuffed and used for decoration.

I love snowmen. I fill my living room with them in December and they stay as long as there is snow outside, which is usually til February. This guy will join them as a decoration until he is needed to warm someone’s neck, back, toes or heart (big smile).

This pattern was designed for “24 Days of Quickies” with Marly Bird. I love being part of an event with so many great designers and patterns. I hope you will check out all of the amazing projects.

Drawstring For Heat/Cold Pack Version: With an H hook and white yarn, ch 80. Finish off and tie a knot in each end. Weave one end in and out of the sts from the bottom edge of the snowman. Tie the ends in a bow or pull closed to keep the pack inside.

Inner Heat/Cold Pack

Fill a long cotton sock, such as an athletic sock. Tie a knot in the open end. Insert this inside the snowman, with the top knot at the top end of the snowman. I created an opening at each end to make it easier to insert the pack.

Fillers: Choose from one of the following depending on the final use of this as a heat/cold pack.

Uncooked Rice

Pros: Works great for a body warmer that can be heated in a microwave, inexpensive

Cons: Has a “smell” of its own when warmed.

Flax Seed

Pros: Very similar to rice but does not have a scent.

Cons: Can be harder to find and more expensive.

More Options: Check out this great article that compares different items to use for fillers.

Scented Oils – Choose soothing oils, such as lavender, to add to your filler. A few drops goes a long way.
