Free Patterns: Irene’s Spider Headbands

I thought it would be fun to create something quick and easy people could whip up to get in the Halloween spirit. This is also great for when you need a “costume” last minute. It seems like every year I am trying to come up with a costume the night before for someone. This little spider can be worn with the headband or made into a pin or used as a decoration.

I made a smaller version for kids too.

The crochet pattern for this project is available here on my blog for free below.

Irene’s Spider Headband Pattern

Materials

  • Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver (worsted weight) yarn in choice of colors (less than 100 yards)
  • Crochet Hook: H (5mm)
  • Notions: 2 tiny black buttons for eyes, yarn needle, sewing needle, matching thread, 1/4″ sew on snaps, 4 pipe cleaners 10-12″ long each

Details

  • Sizes: Child, Teen/Adult
  • Measurements: Child – 19″ long; Teen/Adult – 22″ long
  • Gauge: not needed for this project

Tips

  • First stitch of each row is worked into the same stitch as the turning chain.
  • Numbers at the beginning of each line may refer to steps and not indicate number of rows.
  • Stitch count remains the same unless noted at the end of the step.
  • Beginning chain of each row/round is not counted as a stitch.

Directions

1. With an H hook and ww yarn (black or purple in sample), 81, sc in the 2nd ch from hook, sc 19, ch 40, sk 40, sc 20.

2-4. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st, sc 19, ch 40, sk 40, sc 20.

Finish off and weave in ends.

Small Spider

Body (make 2)
1. With an H hook and ww yarn (color of choice), start with a magic circle of 6 sc sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 6 sc sts), pull closed and place a marker for working in the round. (6sts)

2. 2sc in each st to end of round. (12sts)

3. *sc, 2sc in the next st*, repeat to end of round. (18sts)

4. *sc 2, 2sc in the next st*, repeat to end of round. (24sts) Finish off and weave in end.

Eyes (make 2)
With an H hook and white ww yarn, create a magic circle of 4 sc sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 4 sc sts), pull closed and sl st to join. (4sts) Finish off, leaving a tail for assembly.

With a yarn needle, use the yarn tails to sew the eye pieces to the middle of one body piece.

With a sewing needle and black thread, sew a black button on top of each white piece.

Nose
With an H hook and ww yarn (orange or purple), create a magic circle of 4 sc sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 4 sc sts), pull closed and sl st to join. (4sts) Finish off, leaving a tail for assembly.

With a yarn needle, use the yarn tail to sew the nose overlapping the bottom edge of the eyes.

Legs (make 4)
Cut 4 pipe cleaners 10″ long. Bend each end back against itself, creating a small loop big enough to insert a crochet hook. Twist against itself to hold in place.

Insert hook in pipe cleaner loop at one end and pull up a yarn (same color as spider body). Ch 1, sc 4-6 sts around the loops, sc across the long piece of the pipe cleaner towards the opposite loop, sc 4-6 sts around the loop. Sl st in a st on the straight part of the pipe cleaner. Finish off and weave in ends.

Assembly

  • Lay the plain body circle right side down on a flat surface.
  • If you are adding the headband, lay the middle of the headband across the body.
  • Lay the 4 legs across the middle of the body circle.
  • Lay the 2nd body circle on top with the face up.
  • Pin the circles together, making sure the band is even and not twisted.
  • With a yarn needle and matching yarn sew the outer edges of the circles together.
  • Tie the ribbon in a bow and sew the center knot to the top of the body piece, above the face.

Bend the legs: bend each leg straight up. Bend the legs back down at the middle. Bend the “feet” up.

Snaps

With a sewing needle and matching thread, sew one half of 3 snaps to one end of the band. I spaced mine 1.25-1.5″ apart. Wrap the opposite end around to check placement of the opposite pieces of the snaps. Sew the snaps in place.

Teen/Adult Band

1. With an H hook and ww yarn (black or purple in sample), 91, sc in the 2nd ch from hook, sc 19, ch 50, sk 50, sc 20.

Finish off and weave in ends.
