Free Pattern: Grill Master Hand Towel

My oldest son loves to grill so I thought it would be fun to design some things he could use when cooking. The first is this hand towel and a matching washcloth and hanging dishcloth will follow. This project is part of CAL Central’s 2018 Washcloth Crochet Along.   I chose cream, red and black yarns because (for some reason) they remind me of bbq’s… plus both of my sons like these colors.

I wanted a thicker fabric so I played around with a bunch of different stitches. I created a cluster of sorts by working an sc and hdc together…kind of. I really like how it turned out and will be making other projects with this stitch.

Let’s Talk Yarn

Yarn for the sample was generously provided by Cascade Yarns. This is the first time I have tried Cascade Ultra Pima. It is a #3/DK weight, 100% cotton yarn. Ultra Pima is a smooth and ultra soft cotton yarn available in several colors. You can find the yarn on Love Crochet. The hanks of yarn have 218 yards each which is a nice size.

Directions

Tip: this could be made any size by starting with a chain of an odd amount of stitches.

  1. With an H hook and cream cotton yarn, ch 49, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (48sts)
  2. Ch 1, turn, sc in next st (not the same st as the turning chain), *ch 1, sk 1, sc in next st*, repeat to end of row.
  3. Ch 1, turn, insert hook in first ch 1 space from previous row, pull up a loop, YO and insert hook in same space, pull up a loop, YO and pull through all loops on hook. This is referred to as a “special stitch” from this point on. *ch 1, special st in next st*, repeat to end of row. (24 special stitches)

See photos below for help with the “special stitch”.

  1. Ch 1, turn, special stitch in first ch 1 space, *ch 1, special stitch in next ch 1 space*, repeat until 1 ch 1 space remains, ch 1, special stitch in last ch 1 space, ch 1, special stitch between last special stitch and ch 1 from previous row. This row is repeated to create the entire towel and is referred to as “main row” from this point on.
