Free Pattern: Bonbon Owl Bag

I entered a contest at Posh Pooch Designs Dog Clothes. The challenge was to create something from a pack of Lion Brand BonBons. I LOVED working with these yarns. This was the first time I had tried the Bonbons. It was a lot of fun. Thank you to Sara of Posh Pooch for this challenge.

Bonbon the owl crochet pattern by snappy tots.

Materials

Yarn: Lion Brand BonBons

Note: worsted weight yarn could be substituted, but owl will be slightly bigger.

Crochet Hook: G, H

Miscellaneous: yarn needle; 2 small black buttons for eyes

Quart size mason Jar to slip inside owl (optional)

Metal coat hanger (optional)

Directions

Tips:

  • This project is designed to be made from lightweight yarn and fit a full size mason jar. Adjust amount of increase rounds for small or larger projects, such as a water bottle.
  • If using worsted weight yarn I would suggest using an H hook for the owl body and a G hook for the features.

Owl
1. With G hook and turquoise yarn, start with a magic circle of 8 sts (or preferred method for
starting a circle of 8 sc sts), place marker for working in the round. (8sts)
2. 2sc in each st to end of round. (16sts)
3. hdc, 2 hdc in next st, repeat to end of round. (24sts)
4. hdc 2, 2 hdc in next st, repeat to end of round. (32sts)
5. hdc 3, 2 hdc in next st, repeat to end of round. (40sts)
6. hdc 4, 2 hdc in next st, repeat to end of round. (48sts)
7. Hdc in each st to end of round.
8. hdc 7, 2hdc in next st, repeat to end of round. (54sts)

Bonbon base
9. Sc in next st, sl st in next st. This is the new starting of the round. Change to purple yarn. Ch 4, sk 1, dc, ch 1, repeat to end of round, sl st in 3rd ch at beginning to join.

Bonbon spaces
10. This step creates the “feathers”. ch 4, tr around next post from previous round, ch 1, sl st around next post, repeat to end of round. After last “sl st around post”, sl st around last horizontal bar created by the chain from previous round. This is done so the next round can start up where it needs to instead of down around the post.

  2. Ch 1, sc in between each post from previous round, sl st to join. Note: by working sts in between posts it will help create a space for the drawstrings.
Finish off and weave in ends.

Eyes (make 2):
1. With G hook and yellow or white yarn, start with a magic circle of 6 sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 6 sc sts), sl st to join.
2. Ch 1, 2sc in each st to end of round, sl st to join. (12sts)
3. Ch 1, sc, 2sc in next st, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (18sts)
Finish off, leaving a tail for sewing to owl.

With yarn needle and yarn tail, sew each eye to top band of owl. With sewing needle and black thread, sew a button on top of each yellow eye piece for pupils.

Beak:
1. Leave a yarn tail in the beginning for sewing beak in place. With G hook and orange yarn, ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 2 sts. (3sts)
2. Ch 1, pull up a loop in each of the 3 sts. YO and pull through all loops on hook. Finish off and weave in end.

With yarn needle and yarn tail, sew beak to owl, slightly overlapping bottom edge of eyes.

Drawstring (make 2):
With G hook and pink yarn, ch 35. Finish off and tie a knot in each end. Repeat with blue yarn.
Fold bag in half so face in center front. Starting at right edge, weave pink drawstring over and under the sts of dc round near top of owl. Flip bag over and repeat with blue drawstring on other half of bag.

Top “feathers”: Cut 4 blue yarn strands and 4 pink yarn strands 3” long. Divide in half. Tie one set of drawstring ends together with half of the yarn strands. Pull strands apart for frizzy ends. Repeat for other set of drawstring ends.

Handle
Wire option: Cut top part of wire hanger off and bend each cut end into a “U” shape. Slip each “U” shape under the drawstring knots at each side.

Crochet option: With G hook and yarn color of choice, ch 81. 3hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in each ch until 1 ch remains, 6hdc in last ch. Working across back side of beginning chain, hdc in each ch to end of row, sl st to join. Ch 1, sl st in each st around handle piece, sl st to join. Finish off and weave in ends.
With yarn needle and matching yarn, sew one end of the handle under the drawstring knot. Repeat for other handle end.

Suggestions: It makes a cute toilet paper holder, little purse and can hold a variety of items.
