Penguin Pouch Crochet Pattern

Materials and Details

  • Yarn: 100 yards worsted weight yarn. Sample colors: Red Heart Super Saver Shocking pink, Pumpkin, Saffron, Spring Green, Turqua; Bernat Super Value Lt Damson
  • Crochet Hooks: H (5mm), I (5.5mm)
  • Notions: Yarn needle for weaving in ends, 2 small black buttons, sewing needle, black thread
  • Measurements: 8” tall x 6” wide

Suggestions

  • This could be made in any colors and out of different yarns. A LARGE one made from Bernat Blanket yarn would be super cute and squishy soft.

Directions

Pouch

This starts at the top of the pouch. Color changes written for main sample. Substitute colors as desired.

1. With an I hook and ww yarn, ch 45, sl st in last ch from hook to join in a circle. Make sure chain is not twisted. 

2. Ch 1, sc in each st to the end of the round, sl st to join. (45sts)

3. Repeat the previous round for an additional 5 rounds.

4. Finish off the current yarn and change to worsted weight pink yarn (Red Heart Super Saver Shocking Pink in sample). Ch 1, hdc in the same st and in each st until until 1 st remains, 2hdc in the last st, sl st to join. (46sts)

5-6. Ch 1, *FPHDC around the next post, BPHDC around the next post*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join.

7. Finish off the current yarn and change to worsted weight red yarn (Red Heart Super Saver Cherry in sample). Ch 1, hdc in the same st and in each st until 2 sts remain, hdc2tog, sl st to join. (45sts)

8. Finish off the current yarn and change to worsted weight orange yarn (Red Heart Super Saver Pumpkin in sample). Ch 1, BPHDC around each post to end of round, sl st to join. 

9. Ch 1, hdc in the same st and in each st to end of round, sl st to join.

10. Finish off the current yarn and change to worsted weight yellow yarn (Red Heart Super Saver Saffron in sample). Ch 1, BPHDC around each post to end of round, sl st to join. 

11. Ch 1, hdc in the same st and in each st to end of round, sl st to join.

12. Finish off the current yarn and change to worsted weight green yarn (Red Heart Super Saver Spring Green in sample). Ch 1, BPHDC around each post to end of round, sl st to join. 

13. Ch 1, hdc in the same st and in each st to end of round, sl st to join.

14. Finish off the current yarn and change to worsted weight blue yarn (Red Heart Super Saver Turqua in sample). Ch 1, BPHDC around each post to end of round, sl st to join. 

15. Ch 1, hdc in the same st and in each st to end of round, sl st to join.

16. Finish off the current yarn and change to worsted weight purple yarn (Bernat Super Value Lt Damson  in sample). Ch 1, BPHDC around each post to end of round, sl st to join. 

17. Ch 1, BPHDC around each post to end of round, sl st to join. 

18. Finish off the current yarn and change to worsted weight black yarn (Red Heart Super Saver Black in sample). Ch 1, *hdc2tog, hdc 7*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (40sts)

19. Ch 1, *hdc2tog, hdc 6*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (35sts)

20. Ch 1, *hdc2tog, hdc 5*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (30sts) Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing the bottom edge closed. 

21. This step creates the hanger on the top edge of the pouch. Change to an H hook. Find the center back of the top round. Count over 2 sts to the right of center. Sl st into the st. Ch 15, sk 2 sts on top round of pouch, sc in the next st and in each st to end of round. 

22. Sl st in each st across the handle/loop and in each st around. Finish off and weave in end.

Turn the pouch inside out. Flatten the pouch so the handle/loop is center. With a yarn needle, use the beginning yarn tail to sew the bottom layers together. Turn the pouch right side out.

Features

Eyes (make 2)

1. With an H hook and white yarn, start with a magic circle of 8 sc sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 8 sc sts), join and pull closed. (8sts)

2. Ch 1, 2sc in each st to the end of the round, sl st to join. (16sts) Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing in place.

Position the eyes in the center of the top area of the pouch. With a yarn needle, use the yarn tails to sew the eyes in place, overlapping in the middle slightly.

With a sewing needle and black thread, sew a black button to the center of each eye piece.

Beak

1. Leave a yarn tail in the beginning to sew the beak in place. With an H hook and orange yarn, ch 5, starting with the 2nd ch from hook, sc2tog, sc2tog. (2sts)

2. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog. (1 st)

3. Ch 1, turn, sl st. Finish off and weave in end.

With a yarn needle, use the beginning yarn tail to sew the beginning edge of the beak to the pouch, overlapping the bottom edge of the eyes. 

Eyelashes: With a yarn needle and blue yarn, st 3 lines at the outer top edge of each eye.

Wings (make 2)

1. With an H hook and yarn, ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 3 chs. (4sts)

2. Ch 2, turn, 2dc in the same st, dc 2, 2dc in last st. (6sts)

3. Ch 2, turn, 2dc in the same st, dc 4, 2dc in the last st. (8sts)

4. Ch 2, turn, dc in the same st and in each st to end of row. 

5. Ch 2, turn, 2dc in the same st, dc 6, 2dc in the last st. (10sts)

6. Ch 2, turn, dc in the same st and in each st to end of row. Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing to the pouch.

With a yarn needle, use the yarn tail to sew the last row of each wing to the pouch at the sides. 

Wing placement: The inside edge of the wing is at the bottom edge of the pink section. It slants upward slightly with the outer edge in the middle of the pink section. See main photo for placement.
