Free Pattern: Firework Solar Covers

Solar lights are a great way to light up the paths in your yard. My dad often picks up cute seasonal ones for me from our Dollar Tree. I have those across the front of my yard and switch them out for the different holidays and seasons. I’ve always wanted to make some that looked like fireworks for summer. These are really quick and easy to make.

Won’t they be fun for camping, bbqs and around the yard this summer?

Solar Light Stands

Solar lights come with a stake to put them in the ground. The ones shown are a special creation I just love. My husband had a bunch of hockey pucks to use for some different projects. He got a brilliant idea to drill a hole in them to hold my solar lights. We take them with us in our travel trailer and they are PERFECT!

Solar lights on stands shown in the photo above. They do not have the covers on them in this photo.

I will be making some fun covers for them so we can be festive while we travel too.

How to make the stands: Our solar lights have a stem that is . He used a bit close in size to drill a hole 1/2 way into the middle of the puck. If you have drill press that works best because it helps keep the hole straight. He used a hand drill and it was fine.

I have been wondering if it would work to super glue the stem to the puck for those that couldn’t drill a hole (i know I wouldn’t have been able to). I am going to give that a try and I will let you know how it goes.

Firework Solar Cover Patterns

  • Yarn: small amounts of cotton or acrylic worsted weight yarn. Sample: Red Heart Super Saver Cherry, White, Royal
  • Crochet Hook: H (5mm)
  • Miscellaneous: yarn needle; tall, skinny solar lamp as shown below (top part of lamp is 6″ circumference and approximately 3.25″ tall). Adjust pattern for larger, similar bulbs by using an I or J hook.
  • Optional: Hockey puck for base, drill and bit (same size as the stem of your solar light) to make a hole in the hockey puck OR super glue
  • Cover Measurement (measured flat): 5″ tall (from top to bottom) x 2.5″ across

Supplies I Used

Hockey Pucks: My husband ordered this 6 pack to use for some other projects. I have enjoyed these stands so much that I am going to try a pack of 18 pucks.

Disclaimer: I might make a small amount from your purchase of this item, at no extra cost to you.

Solar Lights: I really like these solar lights. I get them from Walmart for approximately $1 each and recently found they sell them in packs of 6 and 12 for even cheaper! I have found these in several Walmarts as we travel the northwest. If your Walmart doesn’t carry them you can order them online: Individually or Pack

NOTE: For my sample I did NOT finish off each yarn in the following rounds. I switched between colors so I wouldn’t have to weave in a bunch of ends. Because of the open weave you can see my unused yarn a little bit if you look closely. You can choose to do it this way or end each yarn when switching colors.

15. Change to red yarn. Ch 1, 2sc in the same space and in each space to end of round, sl st to join. Finish off and weave in ends.

Star
1. With an H hook and white yarn, create a magic loop of 5 sc sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 5
sc sts), pull closed and sl st to join. (5sts)

2. *ch 3, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in 3rd ch, sl st in next st on circle*, repeat to end of round.
(5 points) Finish off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing to the top section of the firework.

With a yarn needle, use the yarn tail to sew the star to the firework.
