Free Pattern: Crocheted Monster Eyes

This is the first year my grand daughter will be here for Halloween and she is super excited. I wanted something on my front door, but I don’t like covering the windows that are in the door. Some neighbors put some big eyes on their garage door so my husband suggested those.

These eyes are super simple and made from 6 crocheted circles.

We added some eye brows and a mouth to finish off the monster. Pretty simple, but our grand daughter loved it and you can still see through the windows.

The crochet pattern for this project is available here on my blog for free below.

Big Monster Eyes Pattern

Materials & Details

  • Yarn: 125 yards white ww yarn, 140 yards purple ww yarn (or choice of color) for outer part of eye, black ww yarn.
  • Crochet Hooks: I (5.5mm)
  • Notions: sewing needle
  • Misc (optional): glue, thin cardboard (such as a cereal box), black duct tape or gorilla tape

Tips

  • First stitch of each row is worked into the same stitch as the turning chain.
  • Numbers at the beginning of each line may refer to steps and not indicate number of rows.
  • Stitch count remains the same unless noted at the end of the step.
  • Beginning chain of each row/round is not counted as a stitch.

Directions

    White Eye Piece (make 2)
  1. With an I hook and white yarn, start with a magic circle of 8 sc sts (or preferred method of starting a circle of 8 sc sts), pull closed and place a marker for working in the round. (8sts)
  2. 2sc in each st to end of round. (16sts)
  3. hdc, 2hdc in the next st, repeat to end of round. (24sts)

Optional: From this point on I worked my sts between the posts from the previous row rather than in the st. This creates a denser fabric. You can work into the stitch if you would prefer.

  1. hdc 2, 2hdc in the next st, repeat to end of round. (32sts)
  2. hdc 3, 2hdc in the next st, repeat to end of round. (40sts)
  3. hdc 4, 2hdc in the next st, repeat to end of round. (48sts)
  4. hdc 5, 2hdc in the next st, repeat to end of round. (56sts)
  5. hdc 6, 2hdc in the next st, repeat to end of round. (64sts)
  6. hdc 7, 2hdc in the next st, repeat to end of round. (72sts)
  7. hdc 8, 2hdc in the next st, repeat to end of round. (80sts)
  8. hdc 9, 2hdc in the next st, repeat to end of round. (88sts)
  9. hdc 10, 2hdc in the next st, repeat to end of round. (96sts)
  10. If you have been working between the posts, switch to working in the st from this point on. Sc 5, 2sc in the next st, sc 11, repeat until 7 sts remain, 2sc in the next st, sc 6. (104sts) Finish off, leaving a long tail for assembly.

Purple Back Piece (make 2)

  1. With an I hook and purple yarn, start with a magic circle of 8 sc sts (or preferred method of starting a circle of 8 sc sts), pull closed and place a marker for working in the round. (8sts)
  2. 2sc in each st to end of round. (16sts)
  3. hdc, 2hdc in the next st, repeat to end of round. (24sts)
  4. hdc 2, 2hdc in the next st, repeat to end of round. (32sts)
  5. hdc 3, 2hdc in the next st, repeat to end of round. (40sts)
  6. hdc 4, 2hdc in the next st, repeat to end of round. (48sts)

  9. hdc 7, 2hdc in the next st, repeat to end of round. (72sts)

  14. Sc in each st to end of round.
  15. sc 11, sc2tog, repeat to end of round. (96sts) Finish off and weave in ends.

Pupils (make 2)

  1. With an I hook and black yarn, start with a magic circle of 8 sc sts (or preferred method of starting a circle of 8 sc sts), pull closed and place a marker for working in the round. (8sts)
  2. 2sc in each st to end of round. (16sts)
  3. sc, 2sc in the next st, repeat to end of round. (24sts) Finish off, leaving a tail for assembly.

Assembly

  • With a yarn needle, use the yarn tails to sew each item together as follows:
  • Sew the pupil to the white piece.
  • Place the white piece inside the purple piece. The outer edges of the purple piece will roll over the white piece. Sew the outer edge of the white piece to the purple piece.

Cardboard Backing (optional)

To make it easier to hang the eyes on the door, I glued them to a circle I cut from a cereal box. I used some fabric glue (because I had it on hand), but you could use any type of craft glue.
