Free Pattern: BF Beanies

Last fall we went to Yellowstone and took my daughter’s boyfriend with us. They wanted matching hats, but they both wear their hats differently. We wanted something that would be cute on boys and girls, be soft and warm, plus look great together. I love making hats with repeating front post stitches. Plus, it creates a squishy soft and warm hat.

peter_medium

Included in this pattern are two similar hats (Peter and Hillary versions) that will be great for best friends, whether they are boys, girls or a couple. Peter’s is designed to fit like a typical beanie. Hillary’s is a looser, slouchy version. Includes all sizes too!

Congrats to Hillary and Peter who got engaged over the holidays! I bet it was because she looked so cute in my hat!

BF Beanies Pattern

Materials & Details

Yarn: worsted weight yarn in choice of colors

Crochet Hooks: I, J

Miscellaneous: yarn needle

Gauge: 4″ = 13hdc and 9 rounds

Sizes: newborn to adult

Note: Please look over the ENTIRE pattern before beginning. Work in continuous rounds unless stated.

Colors: Any colors could be used. Since these were made to be worn together, I used the same colors in each. Hats were worked in one color until ½ desired length (see chart at end of pattern). Then, colors were alternated after each round, except the center stripe which is 2 rounds.

Help Tip: Rounds start with 8 increases each to form a flatter top, and then switch to 6 increases each starting on round #3.

Directions for Peter’s Beanie:
This beanie is designed to fit like a typical beanie.
Note: All sizes start the same, and then skip to “body” section when increase round for desired size has been completed.

With I hook, start with a magic circle of 8 sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 8 sc sts). Place marker to keep track of beginning of round.
1.    2sc in each stitch to end of round. (16sts)
2.    hdc, 2 hdc in next st, repeat to end of round. (24sts)
3.    hdc 3, 2 hdc in next st, repeat to end of round. (30sts)
4.    hdc 4, 2 hdc in next st, repeat to end of round. (36sts) 3-6 mths
5.    hdc 5, 2 hdc in next st, repeat to end of round. (42sts) 6-12 mths
6.    hdc 6, 2 hdc in next st, repeat to end of round. (48sts) 12-24 mths
7.    hdc 7, 2 hdc in next st, repeat to end of round. (54sts) Child/preteen
8.    hdc 8, 2 hdc in next st, repeat to end of round. (60sts) Teen/Adult
9.    hdc 9, 2 hdc in next st, repeat to end of round. (66sts) Large adult

Body: hdc in each st to end of round. Hdc in each st for 2 more rounds. Sc in next st, sl st in next.

Ch 2, fpdc around each post to end of round, sl st to join.
Repeat until hat measures 1-2” less than desired length according to size chart at end of pattern. (i.e. if making a child size hat, repeat until hat measures 6.5” from starting edge).

Ribbing: Ch 2, fpdc 2, bpdc 2, repeat to end of round, sl st to join.
Repeat ribbing round until hat measures desired length, approximately 2-4 more times.
Finish off and weave in ends.

Directions for Hillary’s Beanie:
This beanie is designed for a slightly loose, slouchy version.
Note: All sizes start the same, and then skip to “body” section when increase round for desired size has been completed.

With J hook, start with a magic circle of 8 sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 8 sc sts).
(36sts)
5.    hdc 5, 2 hdc in next st, repeat to end of round. (42sts) 3-6 mths
6.    hdc 6, 2 hdc in next st, repeat to end of round. (48sts) 6-12 mths
7.    hdc 7, 2 hdc in next st, repeat to end of round. (54sts) 12-24 mths
8.    hdc 8, 2 hdc in next st, repeat to end of round. (60sts) Child/preteen
9.    hdc 9, 2 hdc in next st, repeat to end of round. (66sts) Teen/Adult
10.    hdc 10, 2 hdc in next st, repeat to end of round. (72sts) Adult

Body: hdc in each st to end of round. Hdc in each st for 2 more rounds. Sc in next st, sl st in next.

Ch 2, fpdc around each post to end of round, sl st to join.
Repeat until hat measures desired length according to size chart at end of pattern. A band will also be added. The extra length will help create the slouchy fit.

Band: Ch 2, hdc in each st to end of round, sl st to join.
Repeat previous round 1 (for baby sizes) -4 (for adult sizes) more times.
Ch 1, sc in each st to end of round, sl st to join. Finish off and weave in ends.
