Free Pattern: Tuck Away Scarf

Snappy Tots Free Crochet Pattern

Tuck Away Scarf

A cozy little scarf with a clever keyhole, an optional storage tie, and a whole lot of gift-giving possibilities!

Tuck Away Scarf crochet pattern by Snappy Tots

A little note about sizing: This scarf was designed as a cozy winter accessory for women and teens, with a shorter length that’s just right for tucking inside a jacket without all the extra bulk of a traditional scarf. As a fun bonus, the same size also works beautifully as a regular-length scarf for kids! One pattern, lots of gift-giving possibilities.

Every fall and winter I find myself wishing I had a scarf that was just the right size to tuck inside my coat. Not a bulky cowl bunching around my neck or a long scarf with extra fabric to stuff inside my jacket. Just something cozy and simple!

That’s how the Tuck Away Scarf came to be! This short-ish scarf has a keyhole that keeps the ends together, and you can make it with one or two strands of worsted weight yarn.

I also added an optional little tie so you can roll it up and keep it neatly tucked in a bag, car, or closet. And here’s my favorite part: tie it into a bow and it’s already wrapped for gift giving!

These would be wonderful additions to a gift stash or craft fair table. Make them for men, women, teens, or kids, and choose your favorite colors!

Tuck Away Scarf Directions

This scarf starts at one edge and is worked back and forth in rows.

  • Use a J hook and one strand of worsted weight yarn for a scarf that is cozy and squishes around the neck easily.
  • Use a K hook and two strands of worsted weight yarn or similar for a thicker scarf.
  • Stitch count remains the same.
  • For a wider or thinner scarf, adjust the number of times steps 3 and 6 are repeated. Make sure both are repeated the same number of times.
1. Ch 130, sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (129 sts)
2. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st, sc 29, hdc 69, sc 30.
3. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st, hdc in the next st, *sc in the next st, hdc in the next st*, across 28 sts (30 sts used from the start of this row). *dc in the next st, hdc in the next st*, across 68 sts, *sc in the next st, hdc in the next st*, repeat until 1 st remains, sc in the last st.
4. Repeat the previous row until scarf is 1″ less than half the desired width.

Example #1: The grey scarf is 6.5″ wide when complete. Row 3 was worked a total of 4 times before the keyhole row. It was made with one strand of worsted weight yarn.

Example #2: The purple scarf is 5″ wide when complete. Row 3 was worked a total of 2 times before the keyhole row. It was made with two strands of worsted weight yarn.

5. Create the Keyhole: This step creates the slit for the scarf to pass through. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st, hdc in the next st, *sc in the next st, hdc in the next st*, across 28 sts (30 sts used from the start of this row). *dc in the next st, hdc in the next st*, across 58 sts, ch 12, sk 12, *sc in the next st, hdc in the next st*, repeat until 1 st remains, sc in the last st.
6. Work the following for this row, across the sts and chains.
7. Repeat step 6 the same number of times you repeated on step 4.
8. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st, sc 29, hdc 69, sc 30.
9. Outer Edging: This step is worked around the outer edge of the scarf. This will be the right side of the scarf. Ch 1, turn, sc in each st until 1 st remains, (sc, ch 1, sc) in the last st. Sc evenly across the short end of the scarf. Ch 1, loosely sl st in each st across the beginning edge. Ch 1, sc evenly across the next short end of the scarf. Ch 1, loosely sl st in each st to end of row. Finish off and weave in ends.

๐ŸŽ€ Optional: Storage Tie

This is added to the back of the scarf to tie around it when rolled up. It helps keep the scarf compact for a bag, car, or gift basket.

With an H hook and matching yarn, create a chain 30 inches long. Finish off and tie a small knot in each end.

Placement

With the right side of the scarf towards you and starting at the end closest to the keyhole, roll up the scarf how you normally would. Not too tight or loose.

Find a spot in the middle of the width of the scarf, just past the ending edge after it is rolled.

Pull one end of the storage tie through the middle of the scarf until ends are even. Tie the two ends in a knot next to the scarf.

When the scarf is worn, the ties can be tied in a bow.

Roll it, tie it, and tuck it away!

Optional: Sew the Ends Together

If you want the ends of your scarf to stay together, thread one end through the keyhole as shown in the photo and line up the short ends.

Use a yarn needle and matching yarn to sew the ends together.

To wear the scarf, simply slide the opening bigger, place over your head, and slide back in place.

๐ŸŒˆ Make It Yours!

One of the best things about this scarf is how easy it is to customize!

  • Choose your thickness: Use one strand for a softer, squishier scarf or two strands for a thicker version.
  • Adjust the width: Make it narrower or wider to suit the person wearing it.
  • Make a gift stash: Crochet several in different colors to have ready for last-minute gifts.
  • Wrap it up: Add the storage tie and roll your finished scarf into a cute little bundle.
