Weekly Wash #49: Snowgirl Hanging Towel

We finally got snow! It always makes winter and Christmas so magical.

Our inflatables have not been as excited for the snow.

A couple of years ago I made a Snowman Hanging Towel.

I decided he needed a friend so I made a girl version.


Snowgirl Hanging Towel Crochet Pattern

Materials and Details

  • Cotton Yarn: 200 yards white (or white variegated), 30 yards blue,30 yards green 
  • Crochet Hook: H (5mm), I (5.5mm)
  • Notions: Yarn needle for weaving in ends, 1” button for closure, 2 small black buttons for eyes, sewing needle, black thread
  • Measurements: 12” across widest part x 19” long
  • Gauge: not needed for this project

Directions 

This project starts at the bottom edge.

1. With an I hook and white yarn, ch 40, sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (39sts)

2. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st, *tr in the next st, sc in the next st*, repeat to end of row.

3. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st and in each st to end of row.

4. Repeat steps 2-3 two more times.

5. Ch 1, turn, dc in the same st, hdc in FLO until 1 st remains, dc in the last st.

6. Ch 1, turn, dc in the same st, hdc in BLO until 1 st remains, dc in the last st.

7. Repeat steps 5-6 five more times. 

8. Ch 1, turn, hdc2tog, hdc in FLO until 2 sts remain, hdc2tog. (37sts)

9. Ch 1, turn, hdc2tog, hdc in BLO until 2 sts remain, hdc2tog. (35sts)

10. Repeat steps 8-9 until 27sts.

11. Change to blue yarn for scarf section. Ch 1, turn, 2sc in the same st, sc in each st until 1 st remains, 2sc in the last st. (29sts)

12. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st and in each st across.

13. Repeat step 12 three more times.

14. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in each st until 2 sts remain, sc2tog. (27sts)

15. Change to white yarn. Ch 1, turn, 2sc in same st, sc in each st until 1 st remains, 2sc in last st. (29sts)

16. Ch 2, turn, hdc in the same st and in each st to end of row.

17. Work steps 17-21   between the posts of the previous row. This is worked right below the st. Ch 2, turn, hdc between the posts to the end of the row.

18. Repeat step 17 two more times.

19. Ch 2, turn, hdc2tog, hdc between the posts until 2 sts remain, hdc2tog. (27sts)

20. Ch 2, turn, hdc between the posts of the previous row.

21. Ch 2, turn, hdc2tog, hdc between the posts until 2 sts remain, hdc2tog. (25sts)

22. Change to blue yarn (or desired color for hat band). Ch 1, turn, 2hdc in same st, hdc in each st until 1 st remains,  2hdc in last st. (27sts)

23. Change to green yarn. Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st to end of row.

24. Change to blue yarn. Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st to end of row. Finish off yarn.

25. Turn piece to right side. Attach green yarn (or desired color for top of hat) to the 2nd st from the edge of the last row. Ch 1, sc in each st until 1 st remains. Leave last st unworked. (25sts)

26. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in each st until 2 sts remain, sc2tog. (23sts)

27. Repeat step 26 until there are 17sts

28. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in each st. (16sts)

29. This step creates the buttonhole. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc 5, ch 2, sk 2, sc 5, sc2tog. (14sts)

30. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc, hdc 3, hdc 2 in ch space, hdc 3, sc, sc2tog. (12sts) Finish off and weave in ends.

Hanger Tab

1. With an H hook and green yarn, ch 25, sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (24sts)

2. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st and in each st across. 

3. Repeat the previous row for an additional 3 rows. Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing the button in place.

With a yarn needle, use the yarn tail to sew the button to one end of the tab.

Use a yarn needle and matching yarn to sew the opposite end of the tab to the back of the snowman.

Nose
1. With an H hook and orange yarn, create a magic circle of 6 sc sts (or preferred method for creating a circle of 6 sc sts), pull closed and place a marker for working in the round. (6sts)

2. 2sc in each st to end of round. (12sts)

3. (hdc, dc) in next st, ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in side of dc post, sl st in next st on circle. Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing in place.

With a yarn needle and the yarn tail, sew the nose to the center of the face section.

Eyes: With a sewing needle and black thread, sew the small black buttons above the nose for the eyes.

Scarf End Piece

1. With an I hook and same yarn as the scarf section, ch 39, sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (38sts)

2-4. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st and in each st to end of row.

Finish off and weave in ends.

Fold scarf end piece in half. With a yarn needle and matching yarn, sew the center to the edge of the snowman’s scarf section.
