Happy Projects by Favorite Designers: Vol. 4

It is so wonderful when you come across happy, positive people who genuinely try to help those around them. I have grown as a person and designer because of the many outstanding people I have met through crochet, crafting and yes, social media.

I am on a quest to create some happy moments and would love to share with all of you some fabulous designers trying to do the same. This is the third in this series of Happy Projects to crochet.

For more free happy projects, check out the other happy roundups: Volume 1, Volume 2, Volume 3.

I asked the following designers to share a few thoughts and some of the happy crochet patterns. They also are offering us all some free crochet patterns, plus some are having a pattern sale.

Where are they from, who has the most WIPs (works in progress) and what are their favorite happy patterns? Please take a few minutes to get to know them better. I hope you will check out their sites and follow them for more happy moments.

What is your day to day life right now? “I have 3 boys ranging from 9 to 15 years old. They are all doing homeschool now. Two of them were already in part-time homeschool programs, so it hasn’t been too shocking of a transition, but life is definitely different! We do school in the morning, allow a screen break at lunch, then try to get outside in the afternoon if it’s nice. If it’s not nice out we try to do something active (nerf gun battles are fun!). Then we top off the afternoon with an hour of alone time so mom can recuperate! :D”

How do you keep moving forward and finding the happy in life? “Sticking to a schedule is definitely helping all of us. Keeping a good mix of quiet activities and active ones has been great. Throwing a lot of fun in there and not having too high of expectations has helped everybody. For example, we start school time with some kind of board game. We mix in some of the fun online opportunities that are currently being provided (like special home safari videos posted from the Cincinnati zoo each day) and definitely more baking of chocolate cakes and family movie nights!”

How many WIPS would you guess you have? I am working on a spring shawl! And have two other projects on the go: washcloths and a blanket.

What is your day to day life right now? “My typical day these days involves hanging out with my husband, four children and border collie! We’ve been loving playing board games, binge watching Netflix, reading and working in our backyard garden (the kids mostly play soccer and dig in the sandbox).”

How do you keep moving forward and finding the happy in life? “We try to keep active and do things that we enjoy and find relaxing – crochet, read, gardening and more. At first I stressed out about keeping the house clean and homeschooling, but now I remind myself that these are days I can cherish with my family, really listen and spend time with them.”

I have pets (a border collie and several fish), kids (four of them ranging in ages from nine months to ten) and lots of houseplants!

How would you describe the area where you crochet/knit/craft? “I love working with super bulky weight yarn, especially during the colder winter months.”

What types of yarn makes you happy to work with? “I specialize in creating patterns for crochet sellers so I love super chunky yarn because it makes product-making go more quickly and allows for higher profits.”

What is your day to day life like right now? “I have been homeschooling my youngest 5 girls for the past 14 years so the school part of my day has not changed. BUT we were spending 6 days a week at the dance studio and that has stopped, so that part has been quite an adjustment to my girls.”

How do you keep moving forward and finding the happy in life? “I have been a SAHM/WAHM for the past 18 years and the one thing that has helped me the most is to get up and moving every day like I’m leaving the house (shower, hair, make up). It will give you motivation and helps you feel better about yourself.

The other thing I do daily is laugh. Find something (even if it’s silly) every day to make you laugh. I have been doing this for years and I am a much happier, more positive person than I used to be. It gets easier the more you do it.”

Currently at home: 6 children, 2 rabbits, 2 guinea pigs

What types of yarn makes you happy to work with? I have a new love for DK weight yarn lately.

What is your day to day life right now? “Our days have changed alot! My husband and I are both *trying* to work from home; so far we’ve been playing tag team between work and looking after the 3 kids. I’m also homeschooling in the mornings now and realising that it was a good thing I never became a teacher! On the plus side I’m enjoying wearing leggings and a sweatshirt every day :-)”

How do you keep moving forward and finding the happy in life? “Try to have a schedule but not a timetable. We’re trying to follow more or less the same routine most days but not paying too much attention to the exact time. Also getting everyone outside in the fresh air for even a short time every day is doing us the world of good.”

How would you describe the area where you crochet/knit/craft? “A bit chaotic! I would love a dedicated craft space but alas my WIPs travel around the house with me.”

What types of yarn make you happy to work with? “I love a nice cotton blend DK. I love the stitch definition and the drape!”

How many WIPS would you guess you have? Currently I am kitting a sweater for my daughter and crocheting a summer shawl for an upcoming collection! WIPs… oh, oh my. I’d guess I easily have 30+ in some state of “in progress”. Yikes, I know. Its a lot. I just get very excited about new ideas. Lol

What is your day to day life right now? “The quarantine has brought my family back together in a familiar way. All 4 kids were homeschooled and are now all in college, where classes have moved online. With them all having jobs on campus or in the restaurant industry, they are out of work and so have all come home. Everyone is back in our home library schooling again in their old spots, chatting about classes and what they’re reading and studying… the way it used to be. So, while not the ideal reason, this mama gets the rare and wonderful opportunity to turn back the clock, if only for a few weeks.”

How do you keep moving forward and finding the happy in life? “For me, staying on my regular schedule, minus the errands, has been the key to staying sane through this crazy time and focusing on my yarn and the good I make with my hands is what keeps the paralyzing fear of the unknown from creeping in and darkening the days. Always searching for the rainbow is the best medicine for uncertainty.!”

4 (currently home) kiddos- 17 – 22 yrs, 2 dogs, 1 cat, and oh so many plants. My daughter brought her small greenhouse home from her university apartment.

How would you describe the area where you crochet/knit/craft? “I have the amazing fortune of having my own yarny office. Although I’m terribly messy. My desk is littered with abandoned ideas and swatches. :/”

What types of yarn makes you happy to work with? “Alpaca is soooo dreamy. But of course, all yarn is happy yarn!!”

How many WIPS would you guess you have? “working on rainbow 🌈 halter tops.”

What is your day to day life right now? “My days usually consist of teleworking, family, working on my blog and crocheting.”

How do you keep moving forward and finding the happy in life? “Knowing that in the end, it will all be alright. Even if our previous normal is no longer the same, just knowing that I can adapt and change with our new normal helps. Definitely finding some humor in all that’s happening helps, too. The biggest thing is not panicking about things that are beyond my control. I can control what happens in my house but can’t control what happens out there, so knowing that tremendously helps me and my budding anxiety.”

Currently at home: hubby, 2 kids, 1 dog.

How would you describe the area where you crochet/knit/craft? “Basement in front of the TV”

What types of yarn makes you happy to work with? “Chunky and cotton.”

What is your day to day life right now? “My days are busier with homeschooling and keeping our children engaged. Even with the busier schedule, I love having them at home as we all get to do things together. Crocheting is still a big part of my day, and it helps a great deal to keep my mind off negative thoughts.”

How do you keep moving forward and finding the happy in life? “Faith! I believe without a doubt that there is God and that he has my best interest at heart. He made me, so he gets to deal with issues that are bigger and meaner than I can handle- this is a mindset I imbibe and it’s worked fine in keeping my mind at peace. Let’s face it, there’s only so much a person can do to keep safe, live in peace and enjoy life. So when life’s storms come we need an anchor to hold on to. I found that with my faith in God, and I hope everyone finds that too!”

Currently at home: 2 boys

How would you describe the area where you crochet/knit/craft? “I’m am an eclectic and evolving designer. I have no one item I prefer to crochet over another. My crafting motto is ‘if I can imagine it, I can crochet it.”

What types of yarn makes you happy to work with? “I’m loving more lighter weight yarns like DK and Sport. I prefer mixed fibers, like cotton/acrylic blends or polyester/acrylic/cotton blends. I look forward to working with bamboo, merino and silk fibers someday.”

How many WIPS would you guess you have? Right now I’m working on a faux twist knit headband for my blog, but I have a few crochet projects on the go as well. In all, probably about 5-6 wips.

What is your day to day life right now? “It’s myself, my husband and our 8-year-old at home and we are mostly trying to keep to a routine for normalcy and to get out at least once a day for a walk around the neighborhood for fresh air and exercise. Our daughter has been asking for a dog for a while so we thought it was a good time to get a puppy. It has been the perfect distraction, for sure!”

We have a 2-year-old tortoise shell cat (Kiki) and a 6-month-old chihuahua (Moose).

How do you keep moving forward and finding the happy in life? “Every morning we all shower and get fully dressed like we would if we were going out for the day. It helps keep us energized and motivated to find things around the house that need doing, such as washing the windows, organizing cupboards and closets, etc. We also chat on the phone with family every other day for socialization.”

How would you describe the area where you crochet/knit/craft? “I have the most beautiful view of a valley out of my living room windows and it’s my favorite place to crochet.”

What types of yarn makes you happy to work with? “I love working with self-striping gradients! It’s so satisfying to watch the colors change as you work.”

How many WIPS would you guess you have? I am currently putting together a mystery CAL for my community group! I probably have at least 7 WIPS at present-lol

What is your day to day life right now? “3 of my kids are home with me…We have discovered a new love of old board games we forgot we had. We spend a lot of time crafting and watching Disney+, too. Our school isn’t set up for proper online learning for the lower grades, so this former homeschooling Mama has pulled out our curriculum books to keep them in practice.”

“Our house is not only full of crafty goodies, we also have our dog, Snoopy, and 7 spoiled cats! (My oldest daughter is the Crazy Cat Lady!)”

How do you keep moving forward and finding the happy in life? “We get to chat/video chat with friends and family every day, so we still feel connected. We also try to go for a walk every day(weather permitting), for fresh air and exercise. It really boosts your spirits when the sun is shining on you!”

How would you describe the area where you crochet/knit/craft? “I usually sit on my recliner/couch to crochet…right now, it looks like a craft store exploded on it! Lol”

What types of yarn makes you happy to work with? “I love yarn…especially the ombres and self-striping yarns…Call me crazy, but I also love to design with thread! I usually stick to a 3 weight, so I’m not TOO crazy-lol”

How many WIPS would you guess you have? WAY TOO MANY!

What is your day to day life right now? Since I work from home and my husband is a police officer, life hasn’t changed much for us. Thankfully we both kept working. We have one child at home and he actually has LOVED being able to do school from home. Hayden is 13 and the past couple of months have been a lot less stressful for him. Sharing my computer with him did take some adjustment and I did get way behind with work. I have always had an enormous appreciation for teachers and it has definitely grown.

How do you keep moving forward and finding the happy in life? We have tried to come up with ways to promote happiness and I am now on a quest to “create happy” even more.

How would you describe the area where you crochet/knit/craft? I always say I am a crafting vagabond. My computer (Microsoft Surface) sits on a lap desk and I am always moving from place to place. I mostly work from a few places: a corner in my bedroom, one end of the family room couch, a chair by my front room window, the kitchen table, a garden swing during nice weather and in the truck when we travel. I crochet those same places too.

What types of yarn makes you happy to work with? 90% of the time I work with Red Heart Super Saver worsted weight yarn and an H or I hook. The only yarn source in my town is walmart and thankfully it has maintained a great inventory of this yarn. I have also found it is the easiest for my readers to find. I like bright, happy colors and mostly use: Pumpkin, Turqua, White, Shocking Pink, and Spring Green. I like yarns that feel good and are easy to work with. I also like I Love This Yarn from Hobby Lobby and Impeccable Yarn from Michaels.
