Happy Projects By Favorite Designers

It is so wonderful when you come across happy, positive people who genuinely try to help those around them. I have grown as a person and designer because of the many outstanding people I have met through crochet, crafting and yes, social media.

Lately, it seems like my social media feeds are getting weighed down with a lot of negative. If you look closely tho there are still many outstanding things happening in our world and many remarkable people still doing what they can to help and lift the spirits of others.

I am on a quest to create some happy moments and would love to share with all of you some fabulous designers trying to do the same. I asked the following designers to share a few thoughts and some of the happy crochet patterns. They also are offering us all some free crochet patterns and a couple of knit ones too. PLUS, some are having a pattern sale.

Where are they from, who has the most WIPs (works in progress) and what are their favorite happy patterns? Please take a few minutes to get to know them better. I hope you will check out their sites and follow them for more happy moments.

How many WIPS would you guess you have? Believe it or not, I only have 2 WIPs right now! One shawl I’m working on for a pattern soon, and one pair of socks that have been my “when I have time” project for a couple of years now.”

What is your day to day life right now? “I worked from home, so the only thing that has really changed for me is that my husband is now home as well.”

How do you keep moving forward and finding the happy in life? “I try to stick as closely to my normal schedule as possible, and also make sure to enjoy some extra time with my hubby. He’s working during the day, but we have reclaimed his long commute time.

How would you describe the area where you crochet/knit/craft? “I craft all over the house! Sometimes in my office, sometimes on the couch in front of the tv, sometimes in the basement, sometimes even outside!
I have a dog, Millie. You can find her on Instagram at @MightyMissMillie).”

EEEK! Look how adorable Miss Millie is!

What types of yarn makes you happy to work with? “Soft, squishy yarn in fun colors!”

I made this for Earth Day a few years ago. It turned out super cute, and the kid who got it loved it. Walks outdoors are something we can still enjoy, so I’m taking the time to appreciate the outdoors as much as possible as the weather improves.

What is your day to day life right now? “My typical day involves waking up to my puppy, enjoying a cup of coffee with my high school sophomore that is home now and with me during the day, knitting and /or crocheting until dinner (while taking “fetch” breaks – they’re very important!) and then winding down the evening with the hubby. The only thing that has really changed is having my kiddo with us during the day time, and it’s actually been quite lovely!”

How do you keep moving forward and finding the happy in life? “We’ve always been a very happy bunch (almost obnoxiously so!), but we continue to be happy by doing the things we enjoy. We have been spending more time together, more time with the pets, more time in the garden, more time doing our hobbies; I think what it really comes down to is that we’re enjoying the extra time that we have together and we’re making the most out of it. That would be my biggest tip: make the most out of this time!”

How would you describe the area where you crochet/knit/craft? “It’s my happy place (I even made a sign that says so!). It’s a cozy room that houses my yarn, painting supplies, fabric and pictures of my pets and family. It’s very welcoming and very hard to leave at the end of the day. I absolutely love it!!”

What types of yarn makes you happy to work with? “I love cake yarns – Scheepjes and Hobbii make me very happy!! The variety of colors and the softness of them is lovely!”

What is your day to day life right now? “I normally work from home with my 3 year old daughter home with me. Now my 5 year old son and my husband are at home as well. The kids re loving having Dad home more and every day the kids and I take time to spend time together doing something fun and silly.”

How do you keep moving forward and finding the happy in life? “We stick to our schedules and try not to sweat the small stuff. If my son wants to have an ok day, we let him. It has been fun spending extra time with the kids having dance parties and baking cookies. Everyday I let them choose a special activity to do together.”

How would you describe the area where you crochet/knit/craft? “I tend to crochet on my sofa with my kids as they love to watch me crochet/ cuddle while I crochet.”

What is your day to day life right now? “I have found being at home with my family very soothing, and I am embracing it. We are already homeschoolers, which means of course, that we were never home. Lessons, clubs, classes, meet-ups…. it’s been really nice not always having somewhere to rush off to lately. I have also been able to put more time towards pattern writing, submissions, testing, and playing with my yarn. All this time at home is really great!”

How do you keep moving forward and finding the happy in life? “For us, the only thing that has changed is being at home more than normal. Our regular daily schedule for homeschool has stayed the same, we’re meeting up with friends online in a Zoom room, and we’re starting to finally get our yard in order (it’s been a mess for years!) We are looking at this time at home as a blessing.”

How would you describe the area where you crochet/knit/craft? “I call my sofa my “studio.” It’s a monster. I have project bags lined across it, pattern books stacked up at one end, modular storage drawers at the other end, a side table with stitch markers, pens, notebooks, hooks, needles, and even a cup holder built-in.”

What types of yarn makes you happy to work with? “I love natural fibers, with tonals being my favorite type of coloring. If I had to pick a favorite fiber, it would be alpaca/silk blends. Of course, Merino is always wonderful. Lace-weight is great, especially with beads.”

What is your day to day life right now? “My 4 girls and grandson are all home. While they struggled with figuring out the online work the first few days, they’ve been good at starting first thing in the morning so they can enjoy playtime and craft time in the afternoon. Right now they are trying fleece together to make blankets for camping this summer.
My husband and I both still work. I’m in an office with 1 other person with a large shop for our electricians to grab supplies so contact is pretty slim.”

How do you keep moving forward and finding the happy in life? “There is a positive in every aspect of life. We are all struggling in different ways with or without a virus going around so choose to find the positive. The sunshine feels great to sit in on my patio. We’ve been able to plant some peas a d look forward to them growing. My girls are creating a fairy garden and a gnome garden this year and it’s fun to watch them get creative. Instead of stressing over what we can’t do, we enjoy the things we can.”

How would you describe the area where you crochet/knit/craft? “Now that its warming up, I will be on my patio surrounded by flowers or in my chair in the mountains camping.”

What types of yarn makes you happy to work with? “Caron Simply Soft, Vanna’s Choice and Premier Antipilling are my faves.”

What is your day to day life right now? “My husband is working from home, and it’s just the two of us. I’ve worked from home for years, so it’s not so much of a change for me. It’s actually kind of fun to have someone to have lunch with! We manage to stay out of each other’s way during working hours. We love it other, so that really helps.”

How do you keep moving forward and finding the happy in life? “Although I’m not going to the gym 3-4 times a week, I’m trying to get some fresh air and exercise. I’ve found some YouTube videos that I like for workout routines. I get dressed every day, and check-in with neighbors, family, and friends by phone and video more often than I normally do.”

How would you describe the area where you crochet/knit/craft? “I have a sunny studio/office with a big window, but I knit and crochet everywhere!”

What types of yarn makes you happy to work with? “I usually like natural fibers, with wool being my favorite. And I love color! Colorful yarn makes me happy!”

What is your day to day life right now? “As I have been working entirely from home for 2 years, the biggest changes are that I am no longer alone =) My husband is working remotely, my daughter’s college is closed, and my stepson is working in a grocery store (we clean up behind him A LOT).”

How do you keep moving forward and finding the happy in life? “I try to stick to a schedule, but I allow myself grace when I am unable to. I’ve incorporated yoga (with 0 witnesses) and meditation into most of my days to help my anxiety.”

How would you describe the area where you crochet/knit/craft? “Mostly I crochet in my living room, when I watch Netflix or listen to audiobooks in the evening.”

What types of yarn makes you happy to work with? “I love all yarn, but hand-dyed sock yarn is my favorite.”
