Free Pattern: Monster Hanging Towel

Lately, my snappy life is all about MONSTERS! I am doing a monstrous party throughout July to celebrate my business turning 7 (So please come party with me!). Since I have been trying to design a different hanging towel each month, I knew I had to do monsters.

I hope you will love making a hanging towel and matching cloth in random colors. Let’s get started.

If you would like to make the matching wash cloth, CLICK HERE for the pattern.

Monster Hanging Towel

This pattern is available for free below. An ad-free, downloadable PDF of these patterns with all of the photos is available to purchase from my Ravelry Shop: Click HERE

Materials

  • Yarn:  worsted weight cotton yarn
Note – 150 yds needed for main color of hanging towel; 125 yds needed for main color of wash cloth.

Sample yarns: Red Heart Scrubby Smoothie yarn in Cherry (red), Lime (green), Caribbean (lt blue), Royal (dark blue), Brite Orange
  • Crochet Hooks: H
  • Miscellaneous Supplies: Yarn needle, Sewing needle, white thread, black thread, 2-3 small black buttons, one ¾” button for closure (any color)

Details

  • Finished Measurements:
    Hanging Towel – 10.5” wide x 16.5” tall
    Wash Cloth – 10.5”

Tips

  • First stitch of each row is worked into the same  stitch as the turning chain.
  • Numbers at the beginning of each line may refer to  steps and not indicate number of rows.
  • Instructions are written with color changes as shown in sample. Substitute colors as desired.

Directions

This project starts at the bottom edge.

  1. With an H hook and red cotton yarn, ch 41, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (40sts)
  2. Ch 2, turn, hdc in same st, *sk next st, hdc in next st, hdc in skipped st*, repeat until 1 st remains, hdc in last st.
  3. Ch 2, turn, hdc in same st, hdc in next st, *sk next st, hdc in next st, hdc in skipped st*, repeat until 2 sts remain, hdc 2.
  4. Repeat steps 2-3 seven times (14 rows).
  5. Ch 2, turn, hdc2tog, hdc, *sk next st, hdc in next st, hdc in skipped st*, repeat until 3 sts remain, hdc, hdc2tog. (38sts)
  6. Repeat previous row until 24sts remain.
  7. Ch 2, turn, hdc in same st, sc in next st, *hdc in next st, sc in next st*, repeat to end of row.
  8. Repeat previous row 3 more times.
  9. Ch 2, turn, hdc2tog, *hdc in next st, sc in next st*, repeat until 2 sts remain, hdc2tog. (22sts)
  10. Repeat previous row until 16sts remain.
  11. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, *sc in next st, hdc in next st*, repeat until 3 sts remain, sc, sc2tog. (14sts) Finish off yarn and weave in ends.
  12. This step creates the tab strip at the top of the cloth. With an H hook, attach light blue yarn to the 5th st from the right (on last row). Ch 1, sc in same st, sc 5.
  13. Ch 1, turn, sc in same st, sc 5.
  14. Repeat previous row 20 more times.
  15. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sk 2, ch 2, sc2tog. (4sts)
  16. Ch 1, turn, sc, sc 2 around ch, sc. Finish off and weave in ends.

Hair

With an H hook and light blue yarn (or color of choice), ch 8, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc 3, hdc, dc 2. (one peak complete)

Ch 7, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc 3, hdc, dc. (2nd peak complete)

Ch 8, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc 3, hdc, dc 2. (3rd peak complete)

Ch 5, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc, hdc 2. (4th peak complete)

Ch 1, turn, sl st around entire piece, working “sl st, ch 2, sl st in next st” at each tip. Finish off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing bottom/flat edge to towel.

With a yarn needle and yarn tail, sew the bottom/flat edge of the hair piece to the top edge of the towel.

Eyes

Small Eye (make 1)

  1. With an H hook and white yarn, create a magic circle of 8 sc sts (or preferred method for creating a circle of 8 sc sts), pull closed and place a marker for working in the round. (8sts)
  2. 2sc in each st to end of round, sl st in next st. (16sts) Finish off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing to towel.

Big Eye (make 1)

  1. With an H hook and white yarn, create a magic circle of 6 sc sts (or preferred method for creating a circle of 6 sc sts), pull closed and place a marker for working in the round. (6sts)
  2. 2sc in each st to end of round. (12sts)
  3. *sc, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. sl st in next st. (18sts) Finish off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing to towel.

Assembly

  • With a yarn needle and yarn tails, sew the outer edge of each eye to the towel.
  • With a sewing needle a thread, sew a button on top of each eye.
  • With a yarn needle and yarn (color of choice), take a few sts overlapping the top corners of each eye to create eyelashes.
  • With a yarn needle and yarn (color of choice), stitch mouth in place.
  • Flip the towel over. Fold tab strip down to find desired button placement. With a sewing needle and white thread (so it won’t show through the eyes on the front), sew the closure button in place.

Dots

Large (make 1)

  1. With an H hook and orange yarn, create a magic circle of 5 sc sts (or preferred method for creating a circle of 5 sc sts), pull closed and place a marker for working in the round. (5sts)
  2. 2sc in each st to end of round. (10sts)
  3. *sc, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st in next st. (15sts) Finish off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing to towel.

Medium (make 2)

  1. With an H hook and orange yarn, create a magic circle of 5 sc sts (or preferred method for creating a circle of 5 sc sts), pull closed and place a marker for working in the round. (5sts)
  2. 2sc in each st to end of round, sl st in next st. (10sts) Finish off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing to towel.

Small (make 2)

With an H hook and orange yarn, create a magic circle of 5 sc sts (or preferred method for creating a circle of 5 sc sts), pull closed and sl st to join. (5sts) Finish off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing to towel.

With a yarn needle and yarn tails, sew the outer edge of each dot to the towel. Check main photo for placement.
