Free Pattern: Mark Your Spot

I think books make a great gift for all ages. I’ve designed some bookmarks and wraps to add a handmade touch to add next time you give your favorite book to a friend. I’ve added some extras to make seasonal ones too.

These are quick to whip up and make great stocking stuffers and craft fair items.

Mark Your Spot Crochet Pattern

Materials

  • Yarn: worsted weight yarn in a variety of colors (less than 100 yards for each bookmark/band)
  • Crochet Hook: G (4-4.25mm), H (5mm)
  • Notions: Yarn needle for weaving in ends, child size hairbands (1 per book band), ½”-¾” button (1 per bookband), sewing needle, thread
  • Optional: Measuring tape, scissors

Measurements

  • Finished Measurements:
    Flowers – 2.25”-3.5”; Band ½”-¾” wide x desired length
  • Gauge: not needed for this project.

Tips

  • First stitch of each row is worked into the same stitch as the turning chain.
  • Numbers at the beginning of each line may refer to  steps and not indicate number of rows.
  • Stitch count remains the same unless noted at end of row/round.

Directions

Choose a bookmark or band and then add a flower if desired.

Bookmark Version

13” long x ½” wide as written

Adjust length by starting with more or less chs. The braid at the end could also be adjusted for length.

1. With a G hook and ww yarn (color of choice), ch 35, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (34sts)

2. Ch 1, turn, sl st in each st to end of row. Finish off and weave in ends.

Braid: Cut 3 pieces of yarn 12” long. Pull one end of the strands through one end of the bookmark. Pull through and match up yarn tail ends. Divide into 3 groups and braid. Tie a knot 2” from the bottom of the braid. Trim the ends and pull yarn tails apart to friz.

Add a flower to the opposite end if desired. 

Book Band ½” Wide Version

This is great for books 7-9” x 1”. Size and stretch of the hairband affects this as well.

18” long x ½” wide 

Adjust length by starting with more or less chs. The braid at the end could also be adjusted for length.

1. With a G hook and ww yarn (color of choice), ch 73, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (72sts)

2. Ch 1, turn, sl st in each st to end of row. Finish off, leaving a yarn tail at the end.

Slip hair band over the end that has the yarn tail. Fold the end over the band. Use a yarn needle and yarn tail to sew the end in place.

With a sewing needle and matching thread, sew a button to the opposite end. The hair band slips over the button to secure the book band.

Sew a flower on top of the button if desired. 

Book Band ¾” Wide Version

This is great for books 7-9” x 1”. Size and stretch of the hair band affects this as well.

18” long x ¾” wide

1. With a G hook and ww yarn (color of choice), ch 73, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (72sts)

2. Ch 1, turn, sc in each st to end of row.

3. Ch 1, turn, sl st in each st to end of row. Finish off, leaving a yarn tail at the end.

Large Loop Flower

3.5” across

1. With a G hook and ww yarn for center, start with a magic circle of 5sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 5 sc sts), join and pull closed. (5sts) 

2. Ch 1, 2sc in each st to end of round, sl st to join. (10sts)

3. Change yarn color for petals (if desired). Ch 1, *(sc, ch 6, sc) in next st, sc*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join.

4. Work in the ch 6 loops from previous round for this step. *(sc, 4hdc, 2dc, 4hdc, sc) in loop, sl st in st between loops*, repeat to end of round. Finish off and weave in ends.

Small Rounded Flower

2.5” across

1. With a G hook and ww yarn for center, start with a magic circle of 5sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 5 sc sts), join and pull closed. (5sts) 

2. Ch 1, 2sc in each st to end of round, sl st to join. (10sts)

3. Change yarn color for petals (if desired). *Ch 2, (dc, tr,) in same st, (tr, dc, ch 2, sl st) in next st, sl st in next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. Finish off and weave in ends.

Pointed Petal Flower

2.25” across

1. With a G hook and ww yarn for center, start with a magic circle of 5sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 5 sc sts), join and pull closed. (5sts) 

2. Ch 1, 2sc in each st to end of round, sl st to join. (10sts)

3. Change yarn color for petals (if desired). Ch 1, (hdc, dc, ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, dc, hdc, sl st) in same st, sl st in BLO of next st,  *(hdc, dc, ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, dc, hdc, sl st) in next st, sl st in BLO of next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. Finish off and weave in ends.

Small Heart

1. With an H hook and ww yarn, start with a magic circle of 8 sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 8 sc sts), sl st to join. (8sts)

2. Sl st in next st, (sc, hdc, dc 2, hdc) in next st, hdc 2, (hdc, ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, hdc) in next st, hdc 2, (hdc, dc 2, hdc, sc) in next st, sl st in next sp (between posts) to join. Finish off, leaving a tail for sewing in place.

Star

1. With an H hook and white yarn, create a magic loop of 5 sc sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 5

sc sts), pull closed and sl st to join. (5sts) 

2. *ch 3, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in 3rd ch, sl st in next st on circle*, repeat to end of round. (5 points) Finish off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing in place.

Pumpkin

1. With an H hook and orange yarn, ch 5, 2sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc 2, 2sc in last ch from hook. (6sts)

2. Ch 1, turn, 2sc in same st, sc 4, 2sc in last st. (8sts)

3-4. Ch 1, turn, sc in each st to end of row.

5. CH 1, turn, sc2tog, sc 4, sc2tog. (6sts)

6. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc 2, sc2tog. Finish off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing to ghost.

7. Attach green yarn to second st from right on last row. Ch 1, hdc in same st, hdc in next st, ch 1. FInish off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing to ghost. 

With a yarn needle and black yarn, stitch the eyes and mouth in place.

Snowball

1. With an H hook and white yarn, start with a magic circle of 6 sc sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 6 sc sts). Pull closed and place marker to keep track of the beginning of the round. (6sts)

2. 2sc in each stitch to end of round. (12sts)

3. *sc, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (18sts) Finish off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing in place.

Nose: With an H hook and orange yarn, start with a magic circle of 4 sc sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 4 sc sts). Pull closed and slip st to join. (4sts) Finish off, leaving a tail for sewing in place. 

With a yarn needle, use the yarn tail to sew the nose in the middle of the snowball.
