Fall Into Winter Beanie Crochet Pattern

Materials & Details

  • Yarn: 200  yards ww yarn.
    Sample yarns:
    Red Heart Super Saver Aran, Lemon, Saffron, Coral, Burgundy, Medium Thyme, Cafe Late; Bernat Lush, Taupe

    More color suggestions:
    Yarn: Worsted yarn in colors of choice. 

Fall tones

  • 2 shades brown (tan and medium)
  • 2 shades yellow (medium and golden)
  • 2 shades orange (bright and burnt)
  • 2 shades red (rust, burgundy)
  • 2 shades green (olive, dark olive)

Winter tones

  • 2 shades blue (medium and light)
  • 2 shades purple (deep and light)
  • 2 shades grey (charcoal and light)

White

  • Crochet Hooks: I (5.5mm), J (6mm)
  • Notions: Yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • Sizes: Large Child (5-10 Years), Teen/Adult
  • Gauge:  4” in pattern with an I  hook = 13 post sts and 12 rounds

Tips

  • Numbers at the beginning of each line may refer to steps and not indicate the number of rows.
  • The beginning ch does not count as a st.
  • The stitch count remains the same unless noted otherwise.

Size: Large Child (5-10 yrs)

This starts at the top of the hat. 

Directions are written for color changes of the main sample. Substitute colors as desired. 

1. With an I hook and ww yarn (Aran in sample), start with a magic circle of 8 sc sts (or preferred method of starting a circle of 8 sc sts), pull closed and sl st to join. (8sts)

2. Ch 1, 2sc in each st to end of round, sl st to join. (16sts) 

3. Ch 1, *sc, 2sc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (24sts) 

4. Ch 1, *sc 2, 2sc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (32sts) 

5. Ch 1, *sc 3, 2sc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (40sts) 3-3.25” across

6. Ch 1, *hdc 3, 2hdc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (50sts) 4” across

7. Ch 1, *hdc 4, 2hdc in the next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (60sts) 5” across

8. Ch 1, *FPDC around the next 3 posts, BPDC around the next 3 posts*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. 

9. Ch 1, *BPDC around the next 3 posts, FPDC around the next 3 posts*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. 6.25” across

10. Finish off the main color. Change yarn (Lemon in sample). Ch 1, hdc in the same st and in each st to end of round, sl st to join. 

11. Finish off the current yarn. Change to a darker shade (Saffron in sample). Ch 1, *FPDC around the next 3 posts, BPDC around the next 3 posts*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. 

12. Finish off the current yarn. Change to main color. Ch 1, hdc in the same st and in each st to end of round, sl st to join. 

13. Finish off the main color. Change yarn (Coral in sample). Ch 1, hdc in the same st and in each st to end of round, sl st to join. 

14. Ch 1, *BPDC around the next 3 posts, FPDC around the next 3 posts*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join.     

15.  Finish off the current yarn. Change to a darker shade (Burgundy in sample). Ch 1, *FPDC around the next 3 posts, BPDC around the next 3 posts*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join.

16. Finish off the current yarn. Change to main color. Ch 1, hdc in the same st and in each st to end of round, sl st to join. 

17. Finish off the main color. Change yarn (Lush in sample). Ch 1, hdc in the same st and in each st to end of round, sl st to join. 

18. Ch 1, *BPDC around the next 3 posts, FPDC around the next 3 posts*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join.

19. Finish off the current yarn. Change to a darker shade (Medium Thyme in sample). Ch 1, *FPDC around the next 3 posts, BPDC around the next 3 posts*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join.

20. Finish off the current yarn. Change to main color. Ch 1, hdc in the same st and in each st to end of round, sl st to join. 

21-22. Notice the change in post sts on the remaining rounds. Ch 1, *BPHDC around the next 3 posts, FPHDC around the next 3 posts*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. 

Add additional rounds if needed for length. Finish off and weave in ends.

Size: Teen/Adult 

This starts at the top of the hat.

Note: The next stripe of color is not shown in the main sample because it is the smaller sized hat.

22. Finish off the main color. Change yarn (Cafe Late). Ch 1, hdc in the same st and in each st to end of round, sl st to join. 

23. Ch 1, *BPDC around the next 3 posts, FPDC around the next 3 posts*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join.

24. Finish off the current yarn. Change to a darker shade (Bernat Taupe). Ch 1, *FPDC around the next 3 posts, BPDC around the next 3 posts*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join.

25. Finish off the current yarn. Change to main color. Ch 1, hdc in the same st and in each st to end of round, sl st to join.

26-28. Notice the change in post sts on the remaining rounds. Ch 1, *BPHDC around the next 3 posts, FPHDC around the next 3 posts*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. 

add additional rounds if needed for length. Finish off and weave in ends.

Pompom (optional): Make a pompom with the colors from the hat. Use a yarn needle and matching yarn to sew the pompom to the center of the top.

Note: For the sample pompom, I wrapped the yarn around my hand approximately 60 times. I wrapped the main color (Aran), plus one color at a time.
