Free Pattern: Eclipse Water Bottle Holder

Last summer I wanted to make something to join in the eclipse excitement. I made this water bottle holder and glass case for the big day. It worked great and will be perfect for other adventures too. The added glasses case is nice to have a place for regular sunglasses.

Directions – up to 20oz bottle

For larger water bottles, approximately 32-34 oz, use an I hook for the main bag.

  1. With H hook and yellow yarn, start with a magic circle of 8 sts (or preferred method for starting
a circle of 8 sc sts), pull closed and sl st to join. (8sts)
  2. Ch 1, 2sc in each st to end of round, sl st to join. (16sts)
  3. Ch 1, *sc, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (24)
  4. Ch 1, *sc 2, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (32)
  5. Ch 1, *sc 7, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (36sts)

6-7. Ch 1, sc in each st to end of round, sl st to join.

  1. Keep this next step loose. We will be alternating between yellow and gold yarns for this
section to create a look of sun rays.

Ch 1, sc in same st, ch 1, sk 1, sc in next st, repeat until 1 st remains, ch 1, sk 1. Drop this yarn and sl st in first st of round with gold yarn to join.

  1. Continue with gold yarn. Ch 1, sc in first space, *ch 1, sk 1, sc in next space*, repeat until 1 space
remains, ch 1, sk 1. Drop this yarn and sl st in first st of round with yellow yarn to join.

10-11. Repeat steps 8-9 one time.

  1. Ch 1, sc in first space, *ch 1, sk 1, sc in next space*, repeat until 1 st remains, ch 1, sk 1. Finish off
the yellow yarn, leaving enough to weave in. Sl st in first st of round with gold yarn to join.
  2. Continue with gold yarn. Ch 1, sc in first space, *ch 1, sk 1, sc in next st*, repeat until 1 space
remains, ch 1, sk 1, sl st in first st of round to join.
  3. Continue with gold yarn. Ch 2, 2hdc in each ch 1 space to end of round, sl st to join. (36sts)
  4. Ch 2, *hdc 16, hdc2tog*, repeat once, sl st to join. (34sts)
  5. Ch 2, hdc in each st to end of round, sl st to join.

At the end of the following rounds, finish off the current color, leaving enough yarn to weave in securely.

  1. Change to Carrot yarn. Ch 2, hdc in first space, * ch 1, sk 1, hdc in next space*, repeat until 1 st
remains, ch 1, sk 1, sl st in first st to join.
  2. Change to Ranch Red yarn. Ch 2, hdc in first space, * ch 1, hdc in next space*, repeat
until 1 space remains, ch 1, sk 1, sl st in first st to join.
  3. Change to Navy Blue yarn. Ch 2, hdc in first space, * ch 1, hdc in next space*, repeat
until 1 space remains, ch 1, sk 1, sl st in first st to join.
  4. Change to Blue yarn. Ch 2, hdc in first space, * ch 1, hdc in next space*, repeat until 1
space remains, ch 1, sk 1, sl st in first st to join.
  5. Change to Deft Blue yarn. Ch 2, hdc in first space, * ch 1, hdc in next space*, repeat
until 1 space remains, ch 1, sk 1, sl st in first st to join.
  6. Change to Turqua yarn. Ch 2, 2hdc in each ch 1 space to end of round, sl st to join. (34sts)
  7. Ch 2, *hdc 15, hdc2tog*, repeat once, sl st to join. (32sts)
  8. Ch 2, hdc in each st to end of round, sl st to join.

For larger water bottles, repeat previous round 5 times or until desired length.

Finish off and weave in ends.

With a sewing needle and dark thread, sew a large button centered on the top stripe.

Long Handle/Strap: This version is designed to hang from the shoulder

  1. With H hook and Turqua yarn, ch 95, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end of row. (94sts)

2-3. Ch 1, turn, sc in ea st to end of row.

Finish off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing handle to bag.

The end of the handle with the yarn tail is sewn directly across from the the button. Place the handle end inside the top edge of the bag, overlapping approximately 2”. With a yarn needle and yarn tail, sew the handle securely to the bag.

Short Handle: This version is a great length for around your wrist or clipping to another bag.

  1. With H hook and Turqua yarn, ch 25, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end of row. (24sts)

2-3. Ch 1, turn, sc in ea st to end of row.

Follow finishing instructions from longer handle.

Yellow Button Cover

  1. With H hook and yellow yarn, ch 10, sl st to join. (10sts) The
center opening will slip over the button.
  2. Ch 1, 2sc in each st to end of round, sl st to join. (20sts) Finish
off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing to handle.

Place yellow circle on open end of handle. Making sure the center circle stays open (the handle shouldn’t cover the opening), use a yarn needle and the yarn tail to sew the yellow circle to handle.

Pocket For Eclipse Glasses

Keep your eyes safe during the eclipse by having your protective glasses handy.

For regular glasses you will want to add a few more rows to make this wider.

  1. With H hook and Turqua yarn, ch 25, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (24sts)

2-11. Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st to end of row.

  1. Ch 15, sl st in corner to join. Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing bag together.

Fold pocket piece in half, lengthwise. With a yarn needle and yarn tail, sew the long edges and short end together. Leave the top edge unsewn.

Everyday Holder

It is great in other colors too.

Slip the chain loop over the bag handle. Slip yellow circle over button.

You are ready for the big event!
