Free Pattern: Chunky Monster Beanie
One of my most popular and favorite pattern packs is my “build a monster beanie” pack. I designed this SUPER bulky version for a friend’s boys. I think they turned out super cute!

Chunky Monster Beanie Pattern

Materials
- Yarn: Super bulky in choice of colors (approximately 80-100 yds), worsted weight black (approximately 30 yards), small amount of worsted weight white.
- Note: 2 strands worsted weight held together can be substituted but will affect the size of the hat. Check gauge and follow directions for a larger size if needed.
- Crochet Hook – G, H, K
- Miscellaneous: yarn needle, 2 small black buttons for eyes, sewing needle and thread
- Gauge: 4” in super bulky weight with K hook = 7 rounds and 10 hdc sts
- Sizes: Child (2-4 years), Child Large (5-10 years), Preteen – Adult
Child Small (2-4)
1. With K hook and super bulky weight yarn, start with a magic circle of 8 sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 8 sc sts), pull closed and place a marker for working in the round. (8sts)
2. 2sc in each st to end of round. (16sts)
3. *hdc in next st, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (24sts)
4. *hdc 3, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (30sts)
5. *hdc 4, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (36sts)
6. *hdc 5, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (42sts)
7. Sc in next st, sl st in next st. This is the new beginning of the round. Ch 2, *FPDC around next post from previous round, hdc 6*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (42 sts)
8. Repeat previous round until hat is 1″ shorter than desired length. See size chart at end of pattern.
9-10. Ch 2, hdc in each st to end of round, sl st to join.
Finish off and weave in ends. Add features (listed at end of pattern).
Child (5-10)
1. With K hook and super bulky weight yarn, start with a magic circle of 8 sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 8 sc sts), pull closed and place a marker for working in the round. (8sts)
2. 2sc in each st to end of round. (16sts)
3. *hdc in next st, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (24sts)

6. *hdc 5, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (42sts)
7. *hdc 6, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (48sts)
8. Sc in next st, sl st in next st. This is the new beginning of the round. Ch 2, *FPDC around next post from previous round, hdc 7*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (48 sts)
9. Repeat previous round until hat is 1″ shorter than desired length. See size chart at end of pattern.
10-11. Ch 2, hdc in each st to end of round, sl st to join.

Preteen – Adult

9. Sc in next st, sl st in next st. This is the new beginning of the round. Ch 2, *FPDC around next post from previous round, hdc 8*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (54sts)
10. Repeat previous round until hat is 1″ shorter than desired length. See size chart at end of pattern.
11-12. Ch 2, hdc in each st to end of round, sl st to join.
Finish off and weave in ends. Add features (listed at end of pattern).

Extra Large Eye (make one)
- Follow instructions for regular eye through round #3.
- *hdc 3, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (30sts) Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing to hat.
