Free Pattern: Flower Pot Memos

I am always looking for unique gifts for people. I thought it would be fun to create something that looked like a flower pot to hang on the wall to hold a notepad and pen. Our pot needed a flower so a made a topper for the pen so it could bloom. Of course, if we have a flower we needed a bee. This is a special bee that also clips on to hold notes.

Working through both layers, ch 1, sc in same st. Sc evenly across this edge, sl st in bottom corner. Finish off and weave in ends.

Rotate piece and attach yarn to the bottom corner of the opposite side. Working through both layers, ch 1, sc evenly across this edge to top edge of brown section. Finish off and weave in ends.

Attach blue yarn to the last brown st. This will be covered by the brim piece when project is complete. Ch 1, sc evenly around the blue section, working 2sc in each of the corners/bends. Sl st in the first brown st at the opposite end. Finish off and weave in ends.

Brim

1. With an H hook and medium brown yarn, ch 28, sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (27sts)

7. This step is worked around the outer edge of the brim piece. Ch 1, sc in the same st, hdc evenly down the side of the brim piece. (Sc, ch 1, sc) in the first st on the bottom edge, sc in each st to end of row until 1 st remains, (sc, ch 1, sc) in the last st of the row. Hdc evenly up the side of the brim piece. (Sc, ch 1, sc) in the first st on the top edge, sc in each st to end of row, sl st in first st to join. Finish off and weave in ends.

Lay the brim piece so one long edge lines up with the top edge of the light brown section of the pot. Pin in place if needed. With matching yarn and a yarn needle, sew the brim piece to the post section, leaving the middle ⅔ of the bottom edge unsewn. This is so a clothespin or similar item can be clipped to the brim.

Bee

1. With an H hook and black yarn, ch 2, 2sc in the 2nd ch from hook. (2sts)

2. Finish off black yarn and change to yellow. Ch 1, turn, 2sc in the same st, 2sc in the next st. (4sts)

8. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st, sc2tog, sl st in the last st. Finish off and weave in end.

9. This creates the head piece. Leave a yarn tail in the beginning for sewing the head to the body. With an hook and black yarn, ch 4, sc in the 2nd ch from hook, hdc in the next st, ch 1, sl st in the last st. Finish off and weave in end.

With a yarn needle, use the beginning yarn tail to sew the beginning edge of the head to the last row of yellow.

With a yarn needle and black yarn, stitch the black stripes on the body.

Wings: With the bee head to your left, attach the white yarn to the side of the body. Ch 10, sl st in a spot on the body next to the spot, ch 8, sl st in a spot on the body next to the previous sl st. Finish off and weave in ends.

Turn body around to work from the same side (right side) of the bee. Now the bee head should be to your right. Attach the white yarn to the side of the body. Ch 8, sl st in a spot on the body next to the spot, ch 10, sl st in a spot on the body next to the previous sl st. Finish off and weave in ends.

If desired, put glue on one side of a clothespin and glue the bee body in place.

Flower Topper

1. With an H hook and lime green yarn, ch 11, sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (10sts)

2-6. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st and in each st across.

7. At this point, fold the piece around the pencil/pen you would like to use to make sure it will fit. Add additional rows if needed.

Finish off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing the side seam. Fold the piece in half, matching the beginning and ending rows. With a yarn needle, sew the two edges together. At the end, weave the yarn in and out of the sts at the edges of the rows. Pull snug to close the circle. Secure the yarn and weave in ends. Set aside.

Flower

1. Leave a long yarn tail in the beginning for sewing flower center to the top end of the flower stem when flower is complete. With an H hook and orange yarn (or color for flower center), start with a magic circle of 5 sc sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 5 sc sts), pull closed and sl st to join. (5sts)

2. Ch 2, 2hdc in each st to end of row, sl st to join. (10sts)

3. Change to pink yarn (or color for petals). *Ch 2, (dc, tr, dc) in the next st, ch 2, sl st in the next st*, repeat to end of round. Finish off and weave in end.

With a yarn needle, use the beginning yarn tail to sew the flower center to the front of the stem at the top (parallel to the stem). This will help the flower lay flat against the memo holder when in the pocket. If you sew the flower center on top of the stem the flower petals will smash against the holder.
