Free Pattern: Bea Square

Granny squares are one of my favorite projects because they are super portable and can be worked on in the car, at the pool, and can be sewn together to create lots of bigger projects.

I designed this new 8” square that is fun out of a yarn like Red Heart Bitty Stripes, in a solid, or by changing colors each round.

This is part of the 2026 Granny Square Month Crochet Along and Crochet Pattern Bundle.

About The Event

Every day in June, there will be a new featured pattern for an 8” granny square which you can get for free on the designer’s blog. Or, you can grab the entire bundle to get instant access to all 30 included patterns in a downloadable and printable ebook now at a deep discount! There are modified classics, florals, textured blocks, and even some lacy squares. The Granny Square Month CAL and Crochet Pattern Bundle celebrates granny squares!

Support the indie designers you know and love (and find some new-to-you folks to follow) when you join the 2026 Granny Square Month Crochet Along and shop the Crochet Pattern Bundle. You can also get all 30 right now patterns at a deep discount.

If you bought these patterns individually you’d be spending over $112. By buying from a coalition of designers instead of a huge publisher or an AI slop farm, you know that your money is going where it’s needed: into the pockets of your favorite designers so they can keep on creating the patterns you love to make.

YO, insert hook in the next st and pull up a loop, YO and pull through two loops on the hook, *YO, insert hook in the same st and pull up a loop, YO and pull through two loops on the hook*, repeat once, YO and pull through all four loops on hook.

Directions

1. With an I hook and worsted weight yarn, ch 22, sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (21sts)

2. On this row the beginning “ch 2” counts as the first st. Work the first cluster in the next st. Ch 2, turn, *cluster in the next st, ch 1, sk 1*, repeat until 2 sts remain, cluster in the next st. Do not ch 1. Dc in the last st. (12 clusters/25 sts)

3. Ch 1, turn, sc in the same st, *sc in the next st, sc in the space after the cluster*, repeat until 2 sts remain, sc 2. (25sts)

4-5. Repeat steps 2-3 five times.

6. This step is worked around the outer edge of the square. Ch 1, turn, 3sc in the same st, sc 19, 3sc in the last st. Sc 19 sts evenly down the side of the square. 3sc in the first st of the row, sc 19, 3sc in the last st, sc 19 sts evenly up the side of the square, sl st in the first st to join. (88sts)

7. Sl st in the next st. This is the middle of the corner and the new beginning of the round. The beginning “ch 2” counts as the first st.

Ch 2, ( hdc, ch 1, 2hdc) in same space, sk 1, BPHDC 19, sk 1, *(2hdc, ch 1, 2hdc) in corner space, sk 1, BPHDC 19, sk 1*, repeat to end of round, sl st in first st to join. Sl st in the corner space. (96sts)

8. Tip: For this round, some of the sts are worked in BLO (back loop only). I like to work them in the BLO + the 3rd loop (behind the st). This is optional.

Ch 1, 5sc in the same space, sk 1, sc 21 in BLO, sk 1, *5sc in the corner space, sk 1, sc 21 in BLO, sk 1*, repeat to end of round, sl st in the first st to join. (104sts)

Finish off and weave in ends.

If needed, block the piece to create an even square.
