Free Pattern: Shamrock Garland

We realized this year we needed some decorations for St. Patrick’s day. My son requested a flag for our holder and I think it turned out super cute.  

We wanted a little more green so I made a garland to wrap around my basket. You could make several for a longer garland too. I hope you’ll enjoy this quick, little project.

Project Info

  • Project Description: a little garland to tie around a package, basket, candle or hang from hooks.
  • Skill Level: Basic crochet skills are needed and must be able to read a crochet pattern.
  • Completion Time (how long it takes the designer to make one): 1hour

Materials and Details

  • Yarn: small amounts of worsted weight yarn in two different shades of green Sample was made from Red Heart super saver Spring Green and Red Heart With Love Clover.
  • Crochet Hooks: H and J
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends

 

Instructions

Small Shamrocks (make 2) (2.25″ x 3″)

1. With H hook and lighter green yarn, start with a magic circle of 6 sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 6 sc sts), pull closed and sl st to join. (6sts) 2. Ch 8, hdc in 3rd ch from hook, sc 3, sl st 2, sl st in same st on circle.  

3. *Ch 4, (tr, hdc) in next st, (hdc, tr, ch 3, sl st) in next st*, repeat 2 more times. Sl st in base of stem. Finish off and weave in ends. Repeat for second shamrock and set aside.

 

Large/center Shamrock

1. With J hook and darker green yarn, start with a magic circle of 6 sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 6 sc sts), pull closed and sl st to join. (6sts)

2. Ch 8, hdc in 3rd ch from hook, sc 3, sl st 2, sl st in same st on circle.

3. This step creates the leaves and connects the shamrock trio. Ch 4, (tr, hdc) in next st, (hdc, tr) in next st, sl st into tip of the side petal of one of the smaller shamrocks (see photo below).

Make sure both shamrock stems are pointing the same direction. Ch 3, sl st in same st as tr. First petal and connection complete.

Ch 4, (tr, hdc) in next st, (hdc, tr, ch 3, sl st) in next st. Second petal complete.

Ch 3, sl st into tip of the side petal of the second smaller shamrock. (tr, hdc) in next st, (hdc, tr, ch 4, sl st) in next st, sl st in base of stem. Finish off and weave in ends.  

Ties Assembly

1. With H hook and lighter green yarn, sl st into outside tip of a side leaf. Ch 41, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc 19, ch 20, sl st into another spot on side leaf. Finish off and weave in ends. Done!
