Free Pattern: Making Memories Hat

About the pattern: this is designed to be worn in a few different ways. It can be worn as a cowl with the drawstring untied, as a messy bun beanie with the top left a little open for hair to be pulled through, or as a beanie with the drawstring pulled closed and tied.

The Supplies I Used

The Yarn: Red Heart With Love in Aran. This yarn is very close in color to the Red Heart Super Saver Aran, but so much softer. I really enjoy this line of yarns. There are several wonderful colors too.

The hook: When possible I use Clover Soft Touch Crochet Hooks (they only go up to a size J….oh how I wish they came bigger!). I highly suggest using these hooks. I am able to crochet 8-10 hours a day with these hooks. I have extreme fatigue in my hands and arms, but these hooks allow the comfort needed to continue crocheting.

Directions for Large Child

Dimensions (measured flat): 8.5” wide x 8-8.5” tall

The beanie is worked from the top of the hat to the bottom. Change colors as desired.

Stitch count remains the same for the entire hat.

This hat begins at the top with a chain and joined to work in the round. You can follow the directions as written or start with a fsc (foundation single crochet) chain if preferred.

1. With an I hook and ww yarn, ch 60, sl st in first ch to join for working in the round, making sure chain is not twisted. (60sts)

2. Ch 1, sc in same st and in each st to end of round, sl st to join.

3. Ch 2, dc in same st and in each st to end of round, sl st to join. This round is for the drawstring which will be added later.

4. In this section, the beginning ch 3 counts as a st. Ch 3, dc in same st, sk 1, *2dc in next st, sk 1*, repeat to end of round, sl st between the first two posts of the round to join.

5. Ch 3, dc before the next post, *2dc between posts of the 2dc from previous round*, repeat to end of round, sl st between the first 2 posts of the round to join.

Tip: Think of the 2dc in one stitch in the shape of a “V”. The 2dc in the next rounds is worked between the 2dc posts, in the valley of the “V”.

6. Repeat previous round for nine more rounds.

7. Ch 1, (sc, hdc, dc) in the same st, sk 2, *(sc, hdc, dc) in the next st, sk 2*, repeat to end of round, sl st in first sc to join. (20 clusters)

8. Ch 1, TURN,  (sc, hdc, dc) in the same st, sk 2, *(sc, hdc, dc) in the next st, sk 2*, repeat to end of round, sl st in first sc to join.

9. Repeat step 8 three more times or until hat measures the desired length. Note: Make sure to end on the right side of hat. If last desired round is on the wrong side (inside), sl st, ch 1, turn.

10. Ch 1, sc in each st to end of round, sl st to join.

Finish off and weave in ends.

Drawstring: With matching yarn and H hook, create a ch approximately 32” (inches, not chains) long. Finish off and tie a knot in both ends. Weave in and out of the dc round at the top of the hat, *under two posts, over two*, repeat to end of round. Pull through until ends are even.
