The 12″ Squares
The 6″ Squares
About this Cal: Two years ago we did two LARGE block exchanges in our snappy group. Since then people have begged…ya, cuz the first one was AWESOME….for another exchange. Because people get busy and expense can keep some from participating, we decided to do a “make your own” block exchange.
On the 1st and 15th of each month links to 2 FREE patterns will be posted, a 6″ and a 12″. You may choose to do either, both or a combination of sizes. Some months you may even choose to pass. The patterns are chosen by people in our “Snappy Peeps” fb group (have YOU joined? it’s a fun place). I will share all pattern links here so they will be easy to find.

To find pattern: Look down left side for the Nine 10-inch square patterns. Click on it and it will open a pdf. The pattern you are looking for is “Patriotic Jewel.” It is the 4th one down
Note from Alaine: The original pattern will only get you to 10″ and we are looking for 12″. So, I wrote a continuation of the pattern to get you to 12″. Click HERE for Alaine’s instructions.

Notes: it will have to be modified a little for the 6″ square. I chained 30 and then did the hdc in the 4th chain from hook, so my count was 28 and it worked out to be a 6″ square.

Note from Alaine: The butterfly in the middle is raised and 3D in front of the rest of the square. It can be a little confusing at first but the directions and step by step pictures make it totally do-able. I found that a single crochet between the double crochets worked better for me. As written on the directions it came out to be about an 8″ square so I just added a couple of rounds to come out to my 12″ size. I found that the directions and pictures were super easy to follow.

Note from Terry: Caron simply soft H hook. I am a lefty so my scales are opposite from the original balance. Rd 10 is kinda confusing. Rd 14 is a better explanation for rd 10.
Bonus pattern. Terry would like people to have a choice. Her first pick means a lot to her because her dad was a lawyer. Feel free to choose from either of these squares.

Tips from JoAnne: It’s a bit more difficult. The stitches are explained at the beginning of the pattern. If you read through each row before you start it, and take your time, you shouldn’t have any problems.

Do you want to play along, but not sure you want to make a blanket? Why not make the squares out of cotton yarn for some beautiful new wash cloths? They make beautiful table settings too.
