After struggling for months to understand Google+, I decided to figure this out once and for all. I have spent hours reading, asking questions and trying different things. I am far from being a pro, but at least kind of have an idea of what things are. Hopefully, I will help make this easier to understand.
Note: Please be aware there are some blue words with double blue lines under them. These are ad links. Any links pertaining to the article are orange and have one line.
We will start by setting up a google+ account. If you already have one, please skip this part.
Sign up for a gmail account or sign into one you already have on the google plus page.
Make sure you have a profile picture.
On the next screen click “continue to Google+”. It will ask you to “add people you know”. Find some friends so we can play with them in a minute. Click through the next couple of screens, finding things you want to follow or skip to the next step.
“Be Awesome” is similar to the facebook “about”. Add your info and make sure you have a photo. Click “finish”.
Your next screen will look similar to the photo below.
This window is often compared to facebook’s newsfeed. All the posts from people you follow and added will show up here. Close the pop up window and let’s look around.
Now that we’ve taken a look around the “newsfeed”, let’s set up some circles. Click on “people” on the left side of the screen (you might need to click “home” for the drop down menu).
What is this??? It is a fancy way of saying “where you stick the people you follow”. When you add someone a drop down list will appear and give you a few options.
I created a “crochet business” circle. That way I make it so some posts are just visible to you all and my family doesn’t gripe at me. Plus, it made it easier then trying to decide who was a friend and who was an acquaintance. Go ahead and create a new circle.
When possible I like to choose “public” which means everyone and their dogs can see what I post. This way I won’t leave someone out.
After you have added some people to your circles, let’s create a new post.
You can do this a few ways:
- If you only want to create a post, click on “share” in the upper right hand corner by your picture.
- You can post from your newsfeed by clicking “home” on the left drop down menu or +name in the upper right hand corner.
- If you want to go to your profile page, hover over “home” to bring up the drop down menu, then click “profile”.
For this post, lets go to our profile page.
Before we post, encouraging people to visit, let’s change the cover photo. Hover over the large image and click “change cover”.
Notice those words under the cover photo? About…posts…photos…etc. Click on each of those and see what is there. When you post a photo or someone shares one with you it will show up there.
Find the box to post on the left side, under the cover photo.
Choose which “circles” you would like to share the post with and click “share”. There are many ways to spice up your posts. Unlike facebook, each post has its own URL too.
When you post or even comment on a post, you can tag people much like FaceBook and Twitter. Example: +Heidi Lee Yates will tag her in the post/comment. You can also use @person’s name.

How Do I Format Google+ (this is an awesome site too!)
+1: Just their nifty way of saying “like”
Custom URL for PERSONAL PAGE: Google has a few requirements you must meet before setting up a custom URL for your personal page. “You’ll need to have a profile photo, at least 10 followers and an account over 30 days old.”
Hangouts: This is one of my favorite parts of Google+. This is located along the right side of the screen. This is a chat, but so much more. You can do video too! Also, there is a hangouts app for mobile devices. It is just like texting, but can be done from computer as well.
That’s the basics for now. There are a LOT of wonderful things about Google+ and I will keep adding to this post as I come across more brilliant ideas, tips and suggestions people come up with…and that I discover too.
If you have a business then you will want to set up a google + page. Here is an article to help you set up yours: https://plus.google.com/pages/create
Changing the URL of your business page: First your account must be verified by linking to a website – More info.
From your business page profile select “About” on the left hand side. Under “links” – at the very bottom, click “edit”. You can adjust your url there.
Note: They add extra letters or numbers to it, so it is not just googl.com/yourbusinessname – but at least you’re not just a number anymore. (thanks Kate of Crafting Friends for this tip)
Why do some people have multiple accounts and how do we get rid of them?
One problem that many have is that we have multiple gmail accounts. Some friends have added “me” on one account and my alter ego on another. I barely keep up with one of me so how am I supposed to keep up with 2…or more?
I am still in search of the perfect solution. I would suggest a few things but better research a little more.
Is it possible to share things I post on my blog, facebook and twitter with Google +?
I have been posting on Google + for quite awhile…via my blog. You can link your facebook, twitter, blogs and google +. Some like all of these linked and others choose not to. Up to you. Here is an article that explains how to do it. I am looking for a more recent one too: http://www.oxhow.com/share-posts-in-both-google-plus-and-facebook-at-the-same-time/
There are also apps available that will autopost for you, such as Hootsuite.
