Celebrate America year round with this super easy hanging hand towel.

Patriotic Hanging Hand Towel

Materials and Details

  • Cotton yarn: red cotton yarn (approx 3 oz red/1.5 skeins creme de la creme yarn) and about half skein of blue cotton. Sample was made with Red Heart Creme de la Creme Bowl of Cherries (red) and Bluetones.
  • 1 large button, sewing needle, thread
  • Crochet hook: I

Instructions

Cloth

  1. Ch 35, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each across. (34sts)
  2. Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.

3-4. For these two rows choose one of the following options:

Option A:  Ch 2, turn, hdc in same st, hhdc in each st until 1 st remains, hdc in last st. Repeat for one more row.
I have found this helps keep the starting edge from curling.

You could skip these two rows if you don’t want to work this st. It isn’t hard, just takes a little longer.
How to work a hhdc st: https://www.mooglyblog.com/herringbone-half-double-crochet/

Option B:  Ch 2, turn, hdc in same st and in each st to end of row. Repeat for one more row.

  1. Ch 2, turn, Hdc in same st and in each st across.
Keep repeating step 4 or 5 until cloth measures 17″ long.

6-7. If you worked two rows of hhdc in the beginning work two rows of hhdc now.
If not, work 2 more rows of hdc.

8-9. Ch 1, turn, sc in same st and in each st to end of row.
Finish off and weave in ends.

Star

  1. With I hook and blue yarn, start with a magic circle of 5 sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 5 sc sts), join and pull closed. (5sts)
  2. Ch 1, 2 sc in each stitch to end of round, sl st to join. (10sts)

  3. Ch 1, hdc, 2 hdc in next st, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (15 sts)

  4. ch5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, (working down the ch 5) sc, hdc, dc, sk 1 sc on circle, sl st 2, repeat to end of round.

  5. sc 4, ch 2 (at tip of star point), sc 4, sc2tog (between two points), repeat to end of round.

  6. sc 4, 3hdc in ch 2 space, sc 4, sl st (between two points), repeat to end of round.

  7. sc 5, 3hdc in ch 2 space, sc 5, sl st (between two points), repeat to end of round.

  8. This step is worked around outer edge of star. Work sts loosly. Sl st around outer edge of star, working (sl st, ch 2, sl st) at each point AND skipping 2 sts in each valley.

Finish off and weave in ends.

Hanger

  1. Leave a tail in the beginning for sewing to star. Ch 25, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each across. (24sts)
  2. Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.

  3. Ch 2, turn, hdc in same st and in next st, ch 2, sk 2, hdc in each st to end of row.

  4. Ch 1, turn, sc in same st and in each st until ch 2 from previous row, work 3 sc sts around chain, sc 2.

  5. Ch 1, turn, sc in each st to end of row. Finish off and weave in end.

  6. Ch 1, turn, sk first st. Loosely slip st around outer edge of hanger, working (sl st, ch 2, sl st) in each corner. Finish off and weave in end.

Place hanger on back of star and sew non-buttonhole edge to star as shown in photos below. With a sewing needle and thread, sew a button to back of star. See photos for placement.
