Free Pattern: Cupcake Scrubby and Mitt

To celebrate my sixth anniversary as Snappy Tots, I wanted to make cupcakes. I designed this scrubby as a cupcake mitt to fold into a cupcake that will also sit on a table or can be used as a scrubby. It makes a cute decoration too. After making this I decided to offer a shorter hanging scrubby too.

Crochet Hooks: H, I

Miscellaneous: yarn needle

Gauge: not necessary for this project

Measurement:

Mitt: 6” at widest point x 8” tall; Folded and shorty version: 6” at widest point x 6” tall

Directions – Both versions

Project starts at the top of the cupcake.

  1. With variegated yarn and H hook, start with a magic circle of 6 sts (or preferred method for starting a
circle of 6 sc sts), pull closed and place a marker for working in the round. (6sts)
  2. 2sc in each st to end of round. (12sts)
  3. Work each round, 3-8, in BLO. *hdc, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (18sts)
  4. *hdc 2, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (24sts)
  5. *hdc 3, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (30sts)
  6. *hdc 4, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (36sts)

7-8. Hdc in each st to end of round.

  1. Sc in next st, sl st in next st. Place marker for new start of round. Change to solid yarn for bottom
section of cupcake. Ch 2, BPHDC around each post from previous round, sl st to join.
  2. Change to an I hook. Ch 2, *FPDC around next post, BPDC around next post*, repeat to end of
       round, sl st to join.
  3. Repeat previous step for 7 rounds (short scrubby) to 14 rounds (scrubby/mitt version).
Finish off and weave in ends.

Shorty Version

To close the bottom opening of the shorty scrubby, we will sew it closed. Attach matching yarn to the bottom edge. With a yarn needle, weave in and out of sts along bottom edge. Pull snug to secure. There are a lot of sts so it probably won’t close completely. Secure yarn and weave in end.

Frosting – both versions

See photos for extra help if needed.

  1. Attach yarn to first front loop at center top of cupcake. See 2nd photo on top row. *ch 3, sk 1, sl st in
next front loop*, repeat for 3 rounds.
  2. Skip one round. Insert hook into front loop 2 rounds below. Sl st in front loop, *ch 3, sk 1, sl st in next
front loop*, repeat to end of round.
  3. Repeat step 2.
  4. Ch 1, turn. This step starts the petals. Each cluster is worked into the skipped front loop/stitch from
previous round, under each ch 3 loop AND ARROUND the ch. *5hdc in skipped st under ch, sc in
next skipped st*, repeat to end of round and up the slant to next round. Finish with a full repeat.
  5. 5hdc in next skipped st under ch, sc in next skipped st, (5hdc, sc) in next skipped st, *5hdc in next
skipped st, sc in next skipped st, 5hdc in next skipped st, sc in next skipped st, (5hdc, sc) in next
skipped st*, repeat to end of round and up the slant to next round. Finish with a full repeat.
  6. *4hdc in next skipped st, sc in same st as sl st between loops*, repeat to end of round.
  7. *3hdc in next skipped st, sc in same st as sl st between loops*, repeat to last st.

Finish off and weave in ends.

Cherry

  1. With red yarn and H hook, start with a magic circle of 5 sts (or preferred method for starting a
circle of 5 sc sts), pull closed and place a marker for working in the round. (5sts)
  2. 2sc in each st to end of round. (10sts)
  3. *sc, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (15sts)
  4. Sc in each st to end of round.
  5. *sc2tog, sc 3*, repeat to end of round. (12sts)
  6. *sc2tog, sc 4*, repeat to end of round. (10sts)

Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing cherry closed. I cut a long piece of cotton yarn and used it to stuff the cherry. Since this is intended for a scrubby I didn’t want to used stuffing.

With a yarn needle, use the yarn tail to weave thru sts. Pull closed and use remaining yarn tail to sew to

center top of the cupcake. Pull tail up through center of cherry for a stem (omit this part if hanger will be added).
Tie a knot about 1” from top of cherry and cut off remaining yarn.

Hanger (optional)

With H hook, attach red yarn to top center of cherry. Ch 25, sl st in top of cherry, close to starting point. Cut yarn. Tie beginning and ending yarn tails together in a secure knot. Tuck ends inside cherry.
