Free Pattern: Beach Day Lounge Towel

I love using cotton yarn for summery, beach projects. It is the perfect choice for cloths and towels because it is absorbent. I designed this for moms of all ages to enjoy while at the beach. The bright and colorful yarns from Premier Yarns add a cheery touch I hope you will love.

Beach Day Lounge Cover and Towel

Instructions included for two different towel options; a 28″ x 50″ towel and a longer “Lounge Towel” with a pocket to slip over the top of your chair or to carry the towel.

Notes about this pattern

  • First st of each row is worked in the same st as the turning chain.
  • Stitch count remains the same for each row.
  • Color changes are listed for for sample. Substitute as desired. This stitch combo looks best when worked in pairs of rows. Two rows make a ridge.

Instructions

  1. With an H hook and purple yarn, ch 107, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (106sts)
  2. Ch 2, turn, (hdc, hdc, dc) in same st, sk 2, (sc, hdc, dc) in next st, repeat until 3 sts remain, sk 2, hdc in last st.
    3-7. Repeat previous row.

Continue repeating row #2, working the following color sequence:

6 rows white
4 rows green
6 rows white
6 rows blue
6 rows white
4 rows orange
6 rows white
6 rows brown
6 rows white
18 rows pink (because pink is the best color ever!)
2 rows white
2 rows green
2 rows white
2 rows blue
2 rows white
2 rows orange
2 rows white
2 rows green
2 rows white
2 rows purple
2 rows white
2 rows orange
2 rows white
2 rows green
2 rows white
2 rows brown
8 rows white

At this point, continue with rows of sc or skip to “lounge cover towel” below.

Change to one of the colored yarns. Ch 1, turn, sc in each st to end of row.

I repeated the previous row, working 4 rows, each a different color to finish off the colored skeins. Add more rows if desired.

Finish off and weave in all ends.

Variation: This could be folded in half, seamed along the edges, and used for a pillow sham.

Lounge Towel

Yarn:

Worsted weight cotton yarn in choice of colors.

The sample was created using the following yarns:

Premier Home Cotton Solids and Multi Yarns (Small)

6 balls of White (38-01)

2 balls each: Flamingo Splash (44-24); Violet Splash (44-23); Ocean Splash (44-27)

1 ball each: Tangerine Splash (44-25); Honeydew Splash (44-26); Sahara Splash (44-21)

Crochet Hook: H

Miscellaneous: Yarn needle for weaving in ends, 3 buttons (1″ each) to close “bag” when towel is rolled up and ready to carry, sewing needle and thread, pins (optional)

Instructions

Follow instructions, as written, for the towel above. Continue below.

10 (more) rows white
2 rows purple
2 rows white
2 rows pink
2 rows white
2 rows blue
2 rows white

Ch 1, turn, sc in each st to end of row.
For a long towel, finish off here and weave in ends OR continue below to create a handle and pocket.

Handle
1. Change to one of the colored yarns. Ch 1, turn, sc 10, ch 70, skip 86, sc 10. Note: the chain has fewer sts than you will skip. This is to help prevent the handle from stretching bigger than the towel.

  1. Change yarn color if desired. Ch 1, turn, sc 10, sc 70 (across chain), sc 10.

3-4. Repeat previous row.
Finish off and weave in ends.

Pocket
Fold final end of towel down 10″, with right sides together. Pin edges together if needed.

With a yarn needle and matching yarn, sew the side seams together on both edges. Leave the front open. Turn pocket right side out.

The pocket works great slipped over the back of a chair to keep the towel from slipping down. It also holds the towel, making it easy to carry to the beach. Lay the towel out on a flat surface. Starting at the end opposite of the pocket, roll the blanket up and tuck inside the pocket.

You might want to sew a few buttons to the under side of the “handle”. These buttons can then slip through sts on the blanket once it is rolled inside to help keep the blanket inside.

I hope you enjoyed making this project and it will brighten many days at the beach…wherever your “day at the beach” may be.I would love to see your creations. Please add your project to Ravelry and/or share online and include my tag #snappytots and #CelebrateMomCal.

Thanks for crocheting with me!
