Free Pattern: Holiday Friends Decor

I am so excited to be part of this year’s 12 weeks of Christmas CAL and knew right away I wanted to make something bright and cheery. I love the holidays and decorating with my favorite holiday friends, especially snowmen.

Red Heart Super Saver yarn is my go-to yarn because there are so many shades to choose from. I also added the new Red Heart With Love Metallic yarns (LOVE THESE!) for the border on my door hanger. All of these yarns are easy to work with and a nice weight.holiday-blocks

This was the first time I had worked with the Metallic yarns. They are FABULOUS. Really. Super soft, great colors and just feels good when crocheting. I will definitely be making more things with it.

I designed these as separate blocks so they could be made into lots of different things, altogether or separate. Make one of each or a family of snowmen.

Instructions for my door hanger are listed below the block patterns. I will be adding more ideas too.

Variations

So you want to make some blocks, but then what? There are tons of projects you could make. Here are some ideas, PLUS we will be adding more.

Door Hanger/Mini Flag

Measurement: 9″ wide x 31″ long

  1. Make one of each block.
  2. After each block is complete, attach Red Heart With Love Metallic White to the BACK LOOP ONLY of any stitch on one edge of the block. Work this round in BLO. Ch 2, (hdc, ch 1, 2hdc) in same st, hdc in each stitch to corner, (2hdc, ch 1, 2hdc) in corner. Continue working around outer edge, with (2hdc, ch 1, 2hdc) in each corner. Sl st in beginning ch to join. Finish off and weave in ends.
  3. Arrange blocks as shown and seam together. I used a whipstitch method to join mine. Here is a great tutorial on this join by Underground Crafter: Whipstitch Join
Tip: make sure to sew the squares together clear to the edge, even rounding the corner slightly.
  4. After all blocks are joined, attach Red Heart With Love Metallic Red to the BACK LOOP ONLY of any stitch on one side of the piece. Work this round in BLO. With H hook, ch 2, hdc in each st around outer edge, working (2hdc, ch 1, 2hdc) in each corner. Sl st to join at end of round.
  5. This step is NOT worked just in the back loop. With H hook, ch 2, hdc in each st around outer edge, working (2hdc, ch 1, 2hdc) in each corner. Sl st to join at end of round.
  6. Ch 1, sl st in each st around outer edge of piece. Make sure to not pull these stitches too snug.

Casing: if this will be hung, you will need to add a casing to the top back.

  1. Leave a long tail in the beginning for sewing to the piece when complete. With H hook and matching yarn, ch 21, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (20sts)
  2. Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st to end of row.
  3. Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st to end of row.
  4. Ch 1, turn, sc in each st to end of row. Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing to piece.
  5. With yarn needle and yarn tail, sew top and bottom edges to the top back of the piece.
  6. Slip a rod of some kind…a twig adds a cute country touch…through the casing. Attach jute, yarn or wire to the ends and hang.

Table Runner

Follow directions for Door Hanger, but turn squares to face the sides. No casing is needed for this variation.
