Free Pattern: Sugar and Spice Beanie

This is a fun, everyday beanie that is great for boys and girls of all ages, newborn to adult. PLUS a fun pumpkin version is included.

Materials and Details

  • Yarn: worsted weight in choice of colors.
  • Crochet Hook: G, H, I, J (not all hooks needed for each size)
  • Miscellaneous: yarn needle
  • Gauge: 4” with I Hook = 13 hdc and 9 rounds, 4” with J Hook = 12 hdc and 9 rounds
  • Sizes: Newborn -12 mths, toddler, child, teen/adult

Special Stitches

Post Cluster

*YO, insert hook to work a front post st, pull up a loop, YO, pull through 2 loops on hook*, repeat once, YO, pull through all loops on hook. Tip: I like working loosely around the post to create a bigger “bump”.

Working in 3rd loop: rotate row forward slightly and work into the loop behind the st.

Help Tip

Rounds start with 8 increases each to form a flatter top, and then switch to 6 increases each starting on round #3.


Newborn -12mths

Directions are written for color changes as shown in samples. Substitute as desired.

Hook Size: Use an I hook for 0-3 mths (average); Use a J hook for 6-12 mths (average)

1. With hook and blue or pink yarn, start with a magic circle of 8 sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 8 sc sts), sl st to join. (8sts)

2. Ch 1, 2sc in each stitch to end of round, sl st to join. (16sts)

3. Ch 1, *sc, 2 sc in next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (24sts)

4. Ch 1, *sc 3, 2 sc in next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (30sts)

5. Ch 1, *sc 4, 2 sc in next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (36sts)

6. Ch 1, *sc 5, 2 sc in next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (42sts) 4” across

7. Ch 1, hdc in same st, hdc in each st to end of round, sl st to join.

8. Note: when working post cluster, work it around the post directly below. This will keep the clusters lined up.

Change to off white yarn. Ch 1, *post cluster around post, hdc 5 in 3rd loop (behind the st)*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (7 post clusters)

9. Ch 1, hdc in same st, hdc in each st to end of round, sl st to join.

10-11. Change to brown yarn. Repeat steps 8-9.

12-13. Change to blue or pink yarn. Repeat steps 8-9.

14. Ch 1, hdc in same st, hdc in each st to end of round, sl st to join.

15. For larger size only: repeat step 14.

16-17. Work in 3rd loop for this step. Ch 1, sc to end of round, sl st to join. Note: working the second round of sc in the 3rd loop might take some patience.

Repeat step 17 for additional length if needed/desired. Finish off and weave in ends.


Toddler

Repeat step 23 for additional length if needed/desired. Finish off and weave in ends.


Pumpkin Top Variation

Sugar & Spice Beanie with pumpkin variation

The ridges of this pattern remind me of a pumpkin so I just had to make one! After the green top section, follow instructions for main hat, changing colors as directed but between dark and light orange.

Use a G hook for newborn to 12mths and an H hook for all other sizes.

Curls: With hook and green yarn, ch 25, 2hdc in 2nd ch from hook, *hdc, 3hdc in next ch*, repeat to end of chain. Finish off, leaving tails for tying vine to base of stem. Set aside.

Top of hat – All sizes

1. With hook and green yarn, start with a magic circle of 10 sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 10sc sts), place marker for working in the round. (10sts)

2. *sc 4, 2sc in next st*, repeat once. (12sts)

3. Working in BLO for this round, sc in each st to end of round.

4-5. Sc in each st to end of round.

6. *sc 5, 2sc in next st*, repeat once. (14sts)

7. *sc 6, 2sc in next st*, repeat once. (16sts)

8. *sc 7, 2sc in next st*, repeat once. (18sts)

9. Working in FLO for this round, *sc 2, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (24sts)

10. *hdc 2, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round. (32sts)

11. *hdc 3, 2hdc in next st*, repeat to end of round. Sc in next st, sl st in next st. (40sts)

Continue with desired size:

Newborn – 12mths

Change to orange yarn and I hook. Ch 1, *sc 19, 2sc in next st*, repeat once, sl st to join. (42sts) Continue with step #7 of main newborn – 12mth pattern.

When hat is complete, tie curls to base of stem. Use a yarn needle and matching yarn to tack the curl piece to the hat in one more place if desired.

Toddler

Change to orange yarn and I hook. Ch 1, *sc 4, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (48sts) Continue with step #8 of main toddler pattern.

When hat is complete, tie curls to base of stem. Use a yarn needle and matching yarn to tack the curl piece to the hat in one more place if desired.

Child

Change to orange yarn and I hook. Ch 1, *sc 4, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (48sts) Ch 1, *sc 7, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (54sts) Continue with step #9 of main child pattern.

When hat is complete, tie curls to base of stem. Use a yarn needle and matching yarn to tack the curl piece to the hat in one more place if desired.

Teen/Adult

Change to orange yarn and I hook. Ch 1, *sc 4, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (48sts) Ch 1, *sc 7, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (54sts) Ch 1, *sc 8, 2sc in next st*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join. (60sts) Continue with step #10 of main child pattern.

When hat is complete, tie curls to base of stem. Use a yarn needle and matching yarn to tack the curl piece to the hat in one more place if desired.
