Diy: old stool, new look with a crocheted seat cover

Each year I try to come up with something fun for my mom’s birthday present. She is super creative and really appreciates handmade things.

A month or so ago I found this stool. I was so excited because it’s a light yellow and I thought it would be cute in mom’s kitchen. Plus, my oldest son used to sit on one and talk to her on the phone all the time when he was really little.

It was sitting in front of my neighbor’s house with a free sign.

The seat and back had a few little tears and some marks. I stared at it for a few weeks wondering what the best cover would be.

I think it turned out super cute

Patterns

Materials

Worsted weight yarn in your choice of colors.

I hook (pattern calls for a J hook, but I wanted a tighter weave).

Seat Cover

I used an I hook and the “large square” instructions from the free pattern, “Rectangles & Squares Throw (click this link for pattern)” by Katherine Eng.

I needed it to be a little bigger than the pattern so I worked the rounds in the following order:

#1-6

Repeat step 6 two more times.

#5

Work step 6 three times. Repeat for additional rounds if a bigger seat is needed.

Continue pattern as written.

Ch 2, hdc in each st, with 3hdc in each corner, sl st to join at end of round.

Repeat previous round once more. Finish off and weave in all ends.

Cut a long piece of matching yarn. Weave yarn in and out of last round, pull to cinch in square around the seat. Tie a knot at back of seat.

Back Cover

1. With I hook and yarn color of choice, ch 42, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in ea ch across. (41sts)

2. Ch 2, turn, dc in same st, *sk 2, 3dc in next st*, repeat until 1 st remains, dc in last st.

3. Ch 2, turn, hdc in first sp, 3dc in each st to end of row, dc in last st.

4. Ch 2, turn, dc in same st, 3dc in each space to end of row, dc in last st.

5. Repeat previous step until rectangle is desired length.

6. Ch 2, hdc in each st, with 3hdc in each corner, sl st to join at end of round.

7. Repeat previous round once more. Finish off and weave in all ends.

8. Cut a long piece of matching yarn. Weave yarn in and out of last round, pull to cinch in rectangle around seat back. Tie a knot at bottom of seat back.

These could be made to cover a variety of chairs. I would LOVE to see what you make. Please add #snappytots when sharing your creations online.
