Free Pattern: Pumpkin Cloth Set

I love filling my house with lots of fall as soon as possible. The season seems so short. Hanging towels are a great way to bring seasons and holidays into the kitchen. They also make wonderful hostess, family and neighbor gifts.

My hanging pumpkin towel and matching wash cloth are created with a fun texture that is easy to do. I have included a link in the pattern to videos so you can follow along with me.

I created these as a crochet along last fall and the patterns and video are now available online. I hope you enjoy these projects.

Pumpkin Hanging Towel

Tips:
First stitch of each row is worked into the same stitch as the turning chain.

Numbers at the beginning of each line may refer to steps and not indicate number of rows.

These pumpkins are not created symmetrically. The rows on either side of the “ridge” rows are worked differently from each other. This was necessary to create the bottom indents.

1. With an H hook and orange yarn, ch 31, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (30sts)

2. Ch 1, turn, 2sc in same st, sc in each st until 1 st remains, 2sc in last st. (32sts)

3. Repeat previous step until 40sts.

4. Ch 2, turn, hdc in same st, hdc in each st until 1 st remains, 2hdc in last st. (41sts)

5. This step creates one of the ridges. Ch 2, turn, hdc in same st, *sk 2, sc in next st, hdc in previous st, dc in first skipped st*, repeat until 1 st remains, hdc in last st. (13 clusters and 2 hdc/ 41sts)

Tip: the repeat section starts with “sk 2”. These two sts are where the hdc and dc will be worked after working the sc in the next st. The hdc is worked into the second st you skip (the stitch right before the sc). To work the dc you will cross over the hdc and sc sts and work it into the first st you skipped. The stitch count will remain the same, 41sts.

6. Ch 1, turn, sc in each st until 1 st remains, 2sc in last st. (42sts)

7. Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st until 1 st remains, 2hdc in last st. (43sts)

8. Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st until 1 st remains, 2hdc in last st. (44sts)

9-16. Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st to end of row.

17. Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st until 2 sts remain, hdc2tog. (43sts)

18. Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st until 2 sts remain, hdc2tog. (42sts)

19. Ch 1, turn, sc in each st until 2 sts remain, sc2tog. (41sts)

20. This step creates the second ridge. Ch 2, turn, hdc in same st, *sk 2, sc in next st, hdc in previous st, dc in first skipped st*, repeat until 1 st remains, hdc in last st.

21. Ch 1, turn, sc in each st until 2 sts remain, sc2tog. (40sts)

22. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in each st until 2 sts remain, sc2tog. (38sts)

23. Repeat previous step until 30sts.

24. This step is worked around the outer edge of the pumpkin. The placement is not symmetrical, meaning one edge could be different from the other.

      Tips:

–  Place the sts evenly along the edges.

–  “stitches” refer to the next available area for the stitch.

–  Adjust st placement if needed for a more rounded edge.

–  The top of the pumpkin is more smooth. The bottom of the pumpkin has indents to define the ridges.

Across side: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc 26, sc2tog. 2sc in current st (same as last decrease).

Across top:  2sc in next st, sc evenly to far edge of ridge row, sl st in next st, 2sc in next st, sc, 2sc in next st, sc evenly across top of pumpkin until 3 sts before ridge (places for 3 sts), 2sc in next st, sc, 2sc in next st, sl st in edge of ridge row, sc, 2sc in next st, sc, 2sc in next st, sc evenly to edge.

Across side: Sc in each st to end of row.

Across bottom: 2sc in next st, sc evenly to far edge of ridge row, sl st in edge of ridge row, 2sc in next st, sc, 2sc in next st, sc evenly across bottom of pumpkin until 3 sts before ridge (places for 3 sts), 2sc in next st, sc, 2sc in next st, sl st in edge of ridge row, sc, 2sc in next st, sc, 2sc in next st, sc     evenly to edge. Sl st to join. Finish off and weave in ends.

Stem/Hanger

1. With an H hook and brown yarn, ch 7, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (6sts)

2. This step creates the button hole. Ch 1, turn, sc 2, sk 2, ch 3, sc 2.

3. Ch 1, turn, sc 2, sc 3 around chain, sc 2. (7sts)

4. Ch 1, turn, sc in each st to end of row.

5. Repeat previous row 29 times (total of 30 sc rows).

The following steps are each worked across a few sts at a time.
6. Ch 1, turn, 2sc in same st, sc in each st until 1 st remains, 2sc in last
    st. (9sts)

7. Repeat previous row until 15sts.

8. Ch 1, turn, 2sc in same st, sc 2, sc2tog. (5sts)

9. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc 2, 2sc in next st. (5sts)

10. Ch 1, turn, 2sc in same st, sc 4, sc in edge of row. (sc, hdc) in next available st on main row, sk 1, (2dc, ch 1, 2dc) in next st, sk 1, (hdc, sc) in next st, sc2tog, sc 2, 2sc in next st.

11. Ch 1, turn, 2sc in next st, sc 2, sc2tog.

12. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc 2, 2sc in next st.

Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing stem to pumpkin.

Place stem along top of pumpkin. I chose the top to be the smoother, more rounded edge. The bottom has deep indents at the ridge rows.

With a yarn needle and matching yarn, sew a large button to the base of the stem. This is sewn right before the stem section starts to flare out.

Leaf (make 1 or 2 per pumpkin)

With an H hook and green yarn, ch 7, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc, hdc, dc 2, 5dc in last ch. Pivot to work in sts across back of chain. Dc 2, hdc, sc, sl st. Finish off and weave in ends.

With a yarn needle and matching yarn, sew the leaf to the pumpkin.

Flower

1. With an H hook and cream yarn, start with a magic circle of 5sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 5 sc sts), pull closed and sl st to join. (5sts)

2. Ch 1, 2sc in each st to end of round, sl st to join. (10sts)

3. Ch 1, *(sc, hdc, dc, 2tr) in same st, ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, (2tr, dc, hdc, sc) in next st*, repeat for each of the five sts. Finish off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing flower in place.

With a yarn needle, weave the tail in and out of the sts around the flower center. Pull yarn to cinch in center. This will create a slight bulge in the middle. Use the remaining yarn tail to sew the flower to the pumpkin, overlapping the leaf slightly.

Washcloth

1. With an H hook and orange yarn, ch 21, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (20sts)

2. Ch 1, turn, 2sc in same st, sc in each st until 1 st remains, 2sc in last st. (22sts)

3. Ch 1, turn, 2sc in same st, sc in each st until 1 st remains, 2sc in last st. (24sts)                       .

4. Ch 2, turn, hdc, 2hdc in next st, hdc in each st until 2 sts remain, 2hdc in next st, hdc. (26sts)

5. Ch 2, turn, hdc, 2hdc in next st, hdc in each st until 2 sts remain, 2hdc in next st, hdc. (28sts)

6. Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st until 1 st remains, 2hdc in last st. (29sts)

7. This step creates one of the ridges. Ch 2, turn, hdc in same st, *sk 2, sc in next st, hdc in previous st, dc in first skipped st*, repeat until 1 st remains, hdc in last st. (9 clusters and 2 hdc)

10-13. Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st to end of row.

14. Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st until 2 sts remain, hdc2tog. (30sts)

15. Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st until 2 sts remain, hdc2tog. (29sts)

16. This step creates the second ridge. Ch 2, turn, hdc in same st, *sk 2, sc in next st, hdc in previous st, dc in first skipped st*, repeat until 1 st remains, hdc in last st.

17. Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st until 2 sts remain, hdc2tog. (28sts)

18. Ch 2, turn, hdc2tog, hdc in each st until 2 sts remain, hdc2tog. (26sts)

19. Ch 2, turn, hdc2tog, hdc in each st until 2 sts remain, hdc2tog. (24sts)

20. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in each st until 2 sts remain, sc2tog. (22sts)

21. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in each st until 2 sts remain, sc2tog. (20sts)

22. Ch 1, turn, sc in each st to end of row.
