Free Pattern: Cotton Flapper Beanie

It seems like each season has a different need when it comes to hats and it’s nice to have some styles that can be worn (almost) year round. One of my favorites is a hat I designed the first spring I was in business. It still is great for all ages. I have made this with interchangeable flowers for many gifts. It is cute in pictures and every day.

I call this “the perfect hat” because after much trial and error I finally found a great fit. Plus, this hat is a nice basic style for adding embellishments too. I hope you will enjoy this pattern.

Edging and Flowers

Bottom Edge Stitching (optional)
Cut a long piece of contrasting yarn. Using a yarn needle, weave through bottom stitches of hat (see photo). Weave in ends.

Flower
Using different sized hooks will create smaller and larger flowers.

Flower
Using different sized hooks will create smaller and larger flowers.

1. With worsted weight yarn and J hook, start with a magic circle of 5 sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 5 sc sts), pull closed and sl st to join. (5 sts)
2. Ch 2, 2 hdc in each st around, sl st to join. (10 sts)
3. In first st, *Ch 2, dc, 2 trc, dc, ch 2, then sl st in next st*. Repeat until 5 petals are made. Finish off and weave in ends.

Center circle: Repeat steps 1-2 from flower. Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing in place.

Place circle on flower center. Place button on top (if desired). With a yarn needle and yarn tail from circle, sew through all pieces and then sew to the hat.

Clip option: if you do not want to sew the flower to the hat, slip an alligator clip through the back of the flower instead.
