Free Pattern: Bugz Hat

Materials: Worsted weight yarn in red, yellow, black, and 3 shades of green

Lion Brand Homespun in black, red, purple

Peaches and Cream cotton in black and purple (optional for stiffer antennas)
Hooks: H hook (4.5mm), I hook (5.0mm)
Yarn needle

Directions for all sizes and styles:
Follow increases until desired size, as listed at the end of the row, then skip to “for all sizes” and continue.
Note: Do not join at the end of each round, unless stated. This hat is worked in a continuous round to avoid a “seam” look.
For “Hungry Caterpillar”, start with red Homespun yarn, for all others start with black Homespun yarn, or desired color.

With I hook and homespun yarn, Ch 6 (or magic loop), join and pull closed.
1. 2sc in each stitch around (12sts).
2. sc 1, 2 sc in next sc, repeat to end of round. (18sts)
3. sc 2, 2 sc in next sc, repeat to end of round. (24sts)
4. sc 3, 2 sc in next sc, repeat to end of round. (30sts)
5. sc 4, 2 sc in next sc, repeat to end of round. (36sts) newborn
6. sc 5, 2 sc in next sc, repeat to end of round. (42sts) 3-6 mths
7. sc 6, 2 sc in next sc, repeat to end of round. (48sts) 6-12 mths
8. sc 7, 2 sc in next sc, repeat to end of round. (54sts) 12-24 mths
9. sc 8, 2 sc in next sc, repeat to end of round. (60sts) Child/preteen
10. sc 9, 2 sc in next sc, repeat to end of round. (66sts) Teen/Adult
From this point follow the directions for each style.

Ladybug
When increase rows for desired size have been reached, do not join. Remove marker and hdc each stitch until hat is the following length, from top to current row:
Newborn: 4”; 3-6 mths: 4.5”; 6-12 mths: 5.5”; 12-24 mths: 6”; Child/preteen: 6.5”; Adult: 7”

Next round: Hdc each stitch to end of round, with 4 decreases evenly spaced. For example, divide hat in qtrs and hdc2tog at each marker.
Change to red and h hook, sc each round until hat is desired length (refer to sizing chart below). Finish off OR add reverse sc edging.

Reverse sc edging (optional): Working in the opposite direction, (not turning the work, but working from left to right) ch 1, sc in next space to the right, repeat to end of round. Finish off. Weave in ends.

Polka Dots (make 5 or more): With H hook and black, Ch 6 (or magic loop), join and pull closed. 2sc in each stitch around. (12sts) Finish off, leaving a long tail for attaching to hat. Refer to photo for placement.

Antenna (make 2): With an I hook, black homespun and black cotton yarn (optional), ch 12. Hdc 2 in the second ch from hook. Sl st in next ch and across to end. Finish off, leaving at least a 3” tail for attaching to hat.
Place antenna on top of hat and pull one yarn tail through a space close to center of hat. Pull the other yarn tail through a space right next to the first. From the inside tie tails securely together. DO NOT cut yarn yet.
Repeat for second antenna.
From the inside grab both sets of yarn tails (one set from each antenna) and tie together. This will help the antenna stand up. Weave as much of the tails in as possible.

Bee
When increase rows for desired size have been reached, do not join. Remove marker and hdc each stitch until hat is the following length, from top to current row:
Newborn: 3.5”; 3-6 mths: 4”; 6-12 mths: 5”; 12-24 mths: 5.5”; Child/preteen: 6”; Adult: 6.5”

Next round: Hdc each stitch to end of round, with 4 decreases evenly spaced. For example, divide hat in qtrs and hdc2tog at each marker.
Change to regular black yarn and sc each stitch to end of round.
Change to yellow yarn and sc 5 rounds.
Change to black yarn and sc 5 rounds.
Change to yellow yarn and sc 5 rounds.
Check the length at this point. Add another stripe (5 sc rounds of black) if needed.
Finish off OR add reverse sc edging.

Reverse sc edging (optional): Change to black yarn and working in the opposite direction, (not turning the work, but working from left to right) ch 1, sc in next space to the right, repeat to end of round. Finish off. Weave in ends.

Change to light green and sc 3 rounds.

Check the length at this point. Add another stripe (5 sc rounds of black) if needed.

Reverse sc edging (optional): With medium green and working in the opposite direction, (not turning the work, but working from left to right) ch 1, sc in next space to the right, repeat to end of round. Finish off. Weave in ends.

Antenna (make 2): With an I hook, Purple homespun and purple cotton yarn (optional), ch 12. Hdc 2 in the second ch from hook. Sl st in next ch and across to end. Finish off, leaving at least a 3” tail for attaching to hat.
Place antenna on top of hat and pull one yarn tail through a space close to center of hat. Pull the other yarn tail through a space right next to the first. From the inside tie tails securely together. DO NOT cut yarn yet.

Eyes (make 2); With H hook and dark green yarn, ch 4 (6 for larger size hats), sc in first ch from hook and across. Finish off. Attach yellow yarn. Sc around with 2sc in each end stitch. Finish off, leaving a long tail for attaching. Refer to picture for placement.
